Bramble and Gooch on their way out at Newcastle?

April 22nd, 2007 by Ed Harrison · No Comments

For the last four weeks or so most Newcastle fans have thought that Bramble’s poor showing in the second leg UEFA cup tie against AZ Alkmaar in Holland (March 15th) was probably his last game for Newcastle.

Bramble’s time at Newcastle would come to an end after five years in which he has been known more for his mistakes than for his solid play. However, Roeder has already indicated that he has not made up his mind about Bramble.

When Oguchi Onyewu (Gooch) was signed on loan in January from Standard Leige – most fans who knew him from playing for the USA in last year’s world cup – thought he would be a solid acquisition. Yet Gooch seems not to have played well enough – and the fact that he hasn’t made the first team for the last 4 games or so does not look good for a long term stay at Newcastle.

Gooch is a player with massive potential and certainly when he was introduced three years or so into the USA team – he needed time to adjust. But he did adjust and improved his game significantly – so much so that he looked an excellent defender during the world cup – and particularly in the tie against Italy – and was voted the USA’s best player of the tournament.

Maybe Gooch needs a little time to adjust to the Premiership – and certainly his presence (6’ 5”) and built like a rock – is sorely needed at the heart of the Newcastle defense.

Gooch does not make many mistakes – so he has a chance to develop in to a very solid center back in the Premiership – if he is given a chance by Roeder.

What we don’t know is what fee is being asked by Standard Leige – but a fee up to $3M could be a good buy for Newcastle.

As for Bramble it would be very surprising if he is given a new contract – five years is enough time for anybody to earn a renewed contract – and if the truth be told – he hasn’t earned it.
