This is probably a season most Newcastle fans would like to forget. For the second time in three seasons we will miss out on Europe and with football really taking off world-wide European competition is a must for a club like Newcastle.
However, when you look at our striking options for next season they look really good.
Our $17M man Michael Owen will return and fans will be looking forward to Michael changing games by scoring the goals only he can score.
The fact that he looks to be fitter than ever is a really exciting prospect.
No doubt he lost some pace over the last six years or so – but he believes he will be quicker after the operation than before.
Owen owes Newcastle big time for the way they have handled him over the last couple of seasons and he knows it – but he looks set on repaying Newcastle – and that certainly should be worth seeing.
Let’s hope England don’t rush him into action too early in the summer – he really needs to be introduced into games carefully until he is match fit.
That certainly did not happen last summer and another injury playing for England would certainly be disastrous.
We will have to wait and see how Martins and Owen play together – but certainly both are very quick and though small are good headers of the ball.
An exciting young striker prospect at the club is Andrew Carroll – an 18 year old from Gateshead – who has come through the youth setup and only this week signed a 4 year contract.
Andrew was introduced in the second half last week against Portsmouth and played very well as the hold up player. At 6’ 3” he is a force to be reckoned with and very good in the air.
Carroll could be a very pleasant surprise for us next season. He fits the role of Ameobi – in being a target man up front.
So the attacking options look good.
However, as we all know we will need to strengthen at the back – and the players we bring in there will have a huge bearing on our success next season.

Another point of view might be we have Owen (if he stays) who was injury prone even before he joined us and while a great goal scorer does not do much else, Oba who is physically phenomenal but has no idea how to play the game, Shola who is a pub team centre forward at best (OK on a lucky streak), Anton who is an honest individual of very limited ability, and Andy C who at 18 is probably the best partner for Owen if he stays. We have scored 3 goals in last 8 EPL matches. The last goal from midfield (x Emre penalty) was Jimmy Milners screamer way back in January. I see another year of struggle ahead.
