Argentinian Fabricio Coloccini target for Newcastle?

April 29th, 2007 by Ed Harrison · 10 Comments

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp has reportedly launched a move to sign Argentinian World Cup central defender Fabricio Coloccini from Deportivo La Coruna.

Coloccini played for Argentina during last year’s world cup and looked a commanding player - and would seem to fit the bill at Newcastle.

Coloccini

There were reports that Newcastle tabled a bid for the player on January 28 - but not sure whether or not those reports were accurate.

However, he fits the profile of players Roeder wants to bring to the club - being just 25 years old - and having significant international experience with 25 starts for Argentina.

Febricio stands six foot tall and is a classy ball-playing defender who looked as tough as nails during the world cup.

A brief career overview of Coloccini (Information taken from Wikipedia)

He started his career in the youth team of Argentinos Juniors - made his professional debut in 1998 with Boca Juniors.
In 1999, at the end of the Apertura championship, he moved to A.C. Milan. In 2001 he was loaned to San Lorenzo where he helped the team win the 2001 Clausura tournament.
In 2002 he was loaned to Deportivo Alavés and then to Atlético Madrid later in the same year, before moving to Villarreal CF in 2003 (again on loan) and after finally playing a match for Milan, he moved to Deportivo de La Coruña in 2004.
Since he moved to Deportivo de La Coruña he has started 54 games for them.

While we’ll just have to see what happens – this is a player who could do a job at Newcastle.

I absolutely agree. Woodgate lost could be a blessing in disguise. Next up get Gabby Milito from Zaragoza! Taylor as their understudy. Both argentinian are ball playing defenders, calm and collected. I don’t mind bramble as our fall back defender. This is wicked, don’t forget earlier in the year there is a report of him falling out with his coach. Surely we’ve got to be the better choice between the two right.

Absolutely - why would want to goto Portsmouth when they could goto Newcastle United - only the stupid - and we wouldn’t want them in any case. :D

If Roeder is going to do a U-turn on Sol Campbell, better not believe a thing he says after that. This man changes heart to easily. Stick with the plan if he has one.

I just don’t believe that report - we couldn’t get him from Portsmouth - even if we tried - should have done it last year - no second chances.

Sol Campbell has problem with his achilles, hooray.

W - I still have difficulty believing Roeder is now going after Sol Campbell - but Alan Oliver of the Evening Chronicle has reported it - so he usually gets inside information - why he couldn’t have signed him last year I don’t know.

We needed experience at center back then - and we need it now - nothing has changed - other than Steven Taylor has become better - as he will again next year.

Maybe he will now consider Sylvain Distin - although as we have noted elsewhere - he left us for Man City under a bit of a stigma.

Please, i agree with the guy who said to also get Gabriel Milito. They are a couple of great centre halfs who have no faults in their game. I’d love to see them in the Premiership!
