With Newcastle’s season finishing this coming Sunday and Nigel Pearson being asked along with Terry McDermott and Lee Clark to manage the first team Sunday – Shepherd has time to look carefully at who is available before he and the board make their choice of manager.

Let’s think – who should we get?
Decisions do have to be made on some of the players – but if would be strange if anybody was allowed to leave before the new manager is appointed and able to have at least a cursory review of the current squad.
Last week we had listed Luque plus five defenders Bernard, Babayaro, Bramble, Moore and Onyewu as players who would very likely be leaving in the summer.
If you look at that list we may have to add the name of Stephen Carr – because the only reason we thought he wouldn’t go was because he seemed to be a favorite of Roeder .
Sam Allardyce
As we all know he was successful at Bolton when given very few resources.
Has to be the odds on favorite since he was first choice two and a half years ago – but he is not the choice of all supporters.

Big Sam
Some think he is too brusque and undiplomatic in his personality to manage Newcastle – others point to his implication in the Panorama Program on bungs. We shouldn’t forget that our assistant manager at the time, Kevin Bonds was implicated implicated in the bung scandal and was almost immediately sacked by Freddy Shepherd on 26th September. Bond is currently suing the club over his sacking.
We should also remember those claims were vehemently denied by Big Sam and no evidence was forthcoming to prove any wrong-doing – of course that was also true in Bond’s case – which is one reason he is suing the club.
Shepherd and the board will no doubt understand some of the negatives with some United supporters – if his decision is to bring in Allardyce.
So who else may be in the frame for the Newcastle manager position?
Let’s list who we know are out of a job and therefore may be available
- Sven Eriksson - no way will we appoint Sven – he blotted his copy book at England – and it’s interesting that he is still looking for his next job
- Claudio Ranieri – good manager (Chelsea) and has already expressed a wish to manage Newcastle - a possibility
- Marcello Lippi – great manager who coached Italy to their World Cup success – hard for him to fit in at Newcastle
- David O’Leary – average manager who we were interested in when Bobby Robson left – not good enough
- Alan Shearer – has a job but we hope one day Alan will manage Newcastle – but too early and enjoying his role too much as Umbro sporting ambassador and on BBC Match of the Day

Claudio Ranieri Sven Eriksson
We were going to mention the great Ottmar Hizfeld - but Bayern Munich have recently persuaded him to accept a new multi-year contract – following his initial deal to manage Bayern until the end of the season – so watch for Bayern Munich being great again.
So there you have it – those are some of the managers Shepherd and the board may be looking at.
What do you think?
Who have we missed out ?

Jurgen Klinsmann?

W – no way Klinsmann will leave America – he has an American wife and has told everybody he is staying in California.

Ronald Koeman would be my choice.

Eriksson did alright at club level, so if he can keep his snake in his pants and not go down the bigg market he’ll be alright!
Seriously before England he managed to do well at club level, he’s been around Europe and won things. As for England, the current manager is really great isnt he?! bring back Sven all is forgiven I’m sure England fans are shouting.
As for Big Sam, do we want to play that kind of football? remember the Keagan days we were the entertainers, then under Kenny D boring, Under mr sexy football..hmm no comment. Bobby Robson, stability and attacking football. Forget Souness and Reoder. The next man has to be as good as Bobby and Keagan surely? bring back the excitement and energy. Then maybe as a byproduct we’ll start by winning the FA cup!

jose mourinho? ohh no, sorry, i suppose hes too small for a massive club like newcastle, you’ll never win f**k all, live with it and stop sackin managers, they do well for you, u shud be happy with mid table, big (fat) sam, will see you down next season. enjoy.

Sir Hafliði – Beardsley has had little success in management

Van Gaal would be the best choice. Good coach, good football wierd person (as per Fergy, Mourno, etc)

Phil – Louis Van Gaal would be great – he cooked our goose in UEFA cup this year.
19 Ed Harrison // May 7, 2007 at 6:21 PM
Meltzer – not sure Stuart Pearce is good enough (?)
20 Ed Harrison // May 7, 2007 at 6:23 PM
Lenny – Keegan has had his day – he did some great things at Newcastle but as far as structure of club – he got rid of reserve team – which is why Michael Carrick (who was then on our books) is now at ManU and not with us.
21 Ed Harrison // May 7, 2007 at 6:24 PM
bungle – personally I think it would be fantastic if we got Jose – I love the guy – he’s a unique personality – and would almost guarantee us a trophy. He was assistant to Sir Bobby – at Barcelona – we need to get Bobby to get him to call Shepherd.
22 Ed Harrison // May 7, 2007 at 6:25 PM
W – Souness (give me a break) and Coleman aren’t good enough for what we are looking for.
23 Ed Harrison // May 7, 2007 at 6:27 PM
nico30 – Gordon Strachan would be a possibility – he certainly motivates players – although in some interviews he seems weird – and makes fun of the interviewer if he doesn’t like the questions.
He would love the Newcastle job though.
24 Reg Reggington // May 7, 2007 at 6:32 PM
Gerard Houllier?
Don’t think I want him but thought I’d mention…
25 SB // May 7, 2007 at 6:33 PM
Juande Ramos, sounds like he’s the man then. But we havent had much luck with spanish imports
26 Ian Steele // May 7, 2007 at 6:34 PM
If “Big Sam” comes to Newcastle I swear it would be time to seriously think about whether the board are just there to f*ck the fans off! Does no-one remember that he turned us down twice, and really stuck the knife in over the Roeder “management” issue when he said Glenn shouldnt be allowed to manage in the Premiership!! Not only that, but if the club sign Allardyce after sacking Kevin Bond it would be the biggest joke in football – with the expection of Bobby Robson being sacked!!
Sven is an option, but his style of management is so dour, and we need a loud manager.
Perhaps Van Gaal, but would be come to us? Ranieri would be interesting, but is the huge name that everyone expects. I know that Newcastle is a big club, best supporters in the land, bla bla bla, but be realistic – we arent a big team any more, and I think Ranieri would be a bit of a fillip if we got him.
27 swift // May 7, 2007 at 6:35 PM
Allardyce is about as straight as a snake with an itchy tummy, only an idiot would appoint him. Hang on…
Lippi would be marvellous, as would Capello or Ramos. We’d never hire them though. They aren’t on the jobs for boys circuit and they speak in funny languages, ‘we’ve been down that road before’.
28 Hammy // May 7, 2007 at 6:39 PM
I’d give Northumbrian Water a ring……. they are used to managing crap….seriously I think Big Sam could do a job, he has a habit of getting performances out of “superstars,” the current Newcastle players should be ashamed of themselves, I bet the wags go out to do the shopping while they “hide” in their mansions.
29 W // May 7, 2007 at 6:40 PM
I think it will be world cup winning coach Filipe Scolari
30 W // May 7, 2007 at 6:41 PM
He was an england candidate.
31 James // May 7, 2007 at 6:47 PM
Arsene Wenger possibly now that Dein has left arsenal. I personal like Raneri or Ramos to take over.Alladyce will just play set peice football. We could go for a Combination of one of the above with shearer as a understudy. But also apprently Mourinho is annoyed by his critics that say he wouldnt be able to win the premiership without all that money so watch this space but it will probably be a let down knowing Freddy Shepard

Swift: u say only an idiot would appoint allardyce…..what doyou think freddy shepherd is??
i personally think mourinho or lippi should be appointed … as we are in the lower end of the table …. and therefore wont be playing in europe next season…they would both be able to attract top class players to the club and although freddy is an idiot he provides the cash…so him and one of the two managers could make this summer and next season a success….[but this is newcastle so …. owen will be injured again playing for england…martins will move on..luque will stay and continue to crash cars on the way too the airport….even though we wont be playing in europe…and bramble will continue to make mistakes bring back sir bobby with glenn and shearer in a supoorting role.
35 Ed Harrison // May 7, 2007 at 7:03 PM
Hammy – that’s what I like about Allardyce – who would make our squad really play – and be a lot better than they’ve been this season – otherwise they are out.
We have a better squad than Bolton – and Sam knows it – the fact they finished above us says it all.
36 Ed Harrison // May 7, 2007 at 7:03 PM
James – as I’ve said before Mourhino would be welcomed like a saint at Newcastle – not sure he would come.
37 Raffles // May 7, 2007 at 7:26 PM
Vis a vis Sam Rollthedice, where is his promised legal action against the BBC and makers of the Panorama? Also, he is still being investigated by Quest, the Premier League investigative body.
As the fans said on Saturday: Shepherd out. Sack the board.
38 James // May 7, 2007 at 7:40 PM
Whoever it is hopefully we still get Sidwell and Campbell on free transfers and hopefully they know some good defenders to buy as well.
39 W // May 7, 2007 at 7:42 PM
James clealy u don’t know about the 1 year that’s left on campbell’s contract.
40 Raffles // May 7, 2007 at 7:44 PM
And fire Stephen Carr and Titus Shambles out of a cannon. Or catapult. Yes. Catapult them into Sunderland *dreams*
41 Jonny P // May 7, 2007 at 8:14 PM
Get Ramos on the job man, hes one of the few modern day managers who actually believes in fluid attacking (proper) football! Anyone else know how the hell sevilla are challenging for la liga title alongside the giants of barca and real!
WE WANT RAMOS… and some real keegan style football!!!
42 Ed Harrison // May 7, 2007 at 8:26 PM
Gerard Houllier might be OK – he did reasonably well with Liverpool and is doing well at Lyon. Seems quite a few on here don’t trust Allardyce – I just noticed.
43 James // May 7, 2007 at 8:32 PM
W ,u clearly dont know he can buy himself out of that contract and he wants to move closer to newcastle because his girlfriend lives in Newcastle, haha
44 Ed Harrison // May 7, 2007 at 8:33 PM
There’s a rumor we may be after Mark Hughes – he would be great – not mentioned here – but it would be step up from Blackburn.
There’s also rumors that Shepherd has already offered job to Allardyce.
We’re trying to find out if anything definite.
45 James // May 7, 2007 at 8:37 PM
Mark Hughes would be very gd for Newcastle ,but he does tend to do rough tactics hence his players at blackburn. Is it true that Roy Keane is at 25-1???lol shearer wouldnt be happy
46 Dog // May 7, 2007 at 8:39 PM
You live in and post this Blog from America. How can you possibly give an informed view when the only knowledge you have is gleaned from second-hand sources ?
You hardly have your finger on the pulse!
Do you not think you should inform your readers of this, instead of waiting until you are ‘exposed’(for want of a better word)
47 W // May 7, 2007 at 8:39 PM
Clearly u don’t know that Redknapp wants him at southampton and whoever comes in for Roeder doesn’t want him, haha
48 Harry // May 7, 2007 at 8:58 PM
Louis Van Gaal is the arrogant provoking manager that we need. He always seems organised and prepared (depsite losing 4-2 to toon) and is a big name to draw in big players. Also he is the manager of Alkmaar and has limited resources, he may see it that hes taken them as far as they can go.
49 Ed Harrison // May 7, 2007 at 9:04 PM
James – no way Keane would come to Newcastle – he’s be shot by Sunderland fans
50 step up? // May 7, 2007 at 10:39 PM
How can you say newcastle is a step up from blackburn? just curious… didnt we beat u the last 3 games at your ground, we just beat you 2:0, we’re above you in the league, we have better cup runs, need i go on…. ur gna come back with the… more fans and bigger club crap, but if hughes is going anywhere it’s manchester united in 2 or 3 years.
p.s. rough tactics? nelsen, samba, emerton, bentley, pedersen, tugay, mccarthy and roberts? cant see how we only play dirty?
51 darren // May 7, 2007 at 11:16 PM
newcastle need a big clear out from top to bottom, the new manager should be allowed to bring his own staff in as theres a big problem with the training methods too, nobody seems to know what and where there supposed to be playing, i believe we need a top quality european manager who is very good tactically and able to atract top players but who also as plenty of knowledge on the european circuit to bring in cheap quality young players as wenger does for arsenal. My choice would be either Van Gaal, Hitzfeld, Ramos, lippi, Scolari. I think allerdyce as done a great job with the funds he has had available but doubt he has the tactical know how, don’t think he could attract the players and could’nt provide the attacking football that Newcastle fans deserve. So come on freddy listen to the fans, this is your chance to provide a top quality manager for the newcastle fans, either do this or clear off. If we can spend 10million on luque, 8million on bramble why not spend the money on a top manager who will bring in quality unknown european players and save the club millions
52 Lewis // May 7, 2007 at 11:35 PM
Spelling Mistake: It’s Bayern, not Beyern. Agree: Otmar Hitzfed is good. But he is going to have to really prove his worth at Bayern – who are playing UEFA cup instead of CL for the first time in some 10 years or so (when did you last see ManU in the UEFA cup …). Appears the Bayern team are a bunch of brats too … but they do have a much better board. We won’t get him anyway. Who we will get? Hopefully someone with steel balls and a will to win like Churchill. Roll on the summer “firing squad” and let’s get rid of some of our brats …
53 Stan // May 8, 2007 at 6:23 AM
one thing about ranieri .. he already accepted a 3-years deal at FC Parma .. so – i guess – he’s not even on that list
and I’m completely supporting the Big Sam option … and ASAP!
54 Ed Harrison // May 8, 2007 at 8:58 AM
Lewis – whoops – changed it – thanks!
It looks almost inevitable that we’ll get Allardyce – appointed next Monday – and the best thing Big Sam could start with is to list 6 or 7 players as available for transfer and not renew contracts of Moore and Bramble.
55 Ed Harrison // May 8, 2007 at 9:01 AM
Stan – you’re right – we missed that one.
Ranieri replaced the sacked Stefano Pioli earlier this year – and has done quite well there so far. Maybe it was that Newcastle win 1-0 that did it
56 Ed Harrison // May 8, 2007 at 9:05 AM
step up – I didn’t mean that as any disrespect to Blackburn – they have a good team and Hughes has done a great job since we took Souness off your hands.
I meant from a manager point of view – there’s more money available at Newcastle – think it’s a bigger challenge for a manager – and we always have paid big money to manager.
Think we were giving Souness $1.5M – was the common figure on his salary – more than he got at Blackburn.
No doubt Blackburn have been a good team this year and still in with chance of Europe.
57 Ed Harrison // May 8, 2007 at 9:16 AM
Darren – it looks like that will not happen although there are a few reports today
in the Daily Mail – a quote:
“Newcastle were exposed by Louis van Gaal, an experienced Dutchman known to want a crack at the Premiership. Shepherd and his influential sons have also noted Ronald Koeman’s unhappiness at PSV Eindhoven”
Not sure it’s going to happen though.
58 James // May 8, 2007 at 9:52 AM
The likes of Ramos and Raneri would be able to get a whole crop of european players to newcastle but i rekon, Big Sam could do the same he has bought some good talented people from abroad with Bolton so hopefully he will do it 4 us. I think he should sign Dean Ashton and Wayne Bridge straight away. Come on The Toon.
59 Adam // May 8, 2007 at 9:59 AM
wat a shit season, not all can be blamed on the manager, well done glenn for walking out on this disaster and let someone else pick up the pieces. Big sam would cretainly do that and he can sort out our disgarcefully performing players. However he would need to try and establish the club in the top area of the league and yes he has brought good international players in for bolton but we have some big names at newcastle is he willing to sacrifice these big names in order to bring in his desired players and strategy. i hope not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 but yeah big sam all the way
60 Ed Harrison // May 8, 2007 at 10:17 AM
James – two excellent players – no doubt.
We feel that Bridge is wasted at Chelsea – he’d get a game every week at Newcastle – and he’d be just great for us.
I can see him now in our new strip
61 James // May 8, 2007 at 10:24 AM
Im Thinking the new manager should aim for this team;
GK: Shay Given
RB: ? (Cant think)
LB: Wayne Bridge
CB: Steven Taylor
CB: Sol Campbell
RM: James Milner
LM: Damien Duff
CM: Scottie Parker
CAM: Keiron Dyer ( any other ideas need to be able to score goals)
ST: Michael Owen
ST: Obamfemi Martins or Dean Ashton
62 Ed Harrison // May 8, 2007 at 10:27 AM
James – how about Luke Young of Charlton for right back.
Charlton are going down – he may be available.
63 James // May 8, 2007 at 10:30 AM
Actually thats a good idea, and we could probably get him on the cheap.
64 Ed Harrison // May 8, 2007 at 10:59 AM
He looked good against Tottenham yesterday – wonder if he would move up north?
65 James // May 8, 2007 at 11:09 AM
I rekon he would come to us. I am now hoping West Ham go down because we could poach a couple of thier players, like Anton Ferdinand,Lucas Neill, maybe Nigel Reo -Coker.. a couple of maybe’s not worth buying anyone from Watford or Charlton except Bent and Young.
