Can Newcastle Capture Sol Campbell from Portsmouth?

When Sol Campbell was available last year many Newcastle fans wondered why Newcastle wouldn’t jump at the chance of getting Sol who has experience galore.

Better training methods and diets have also shown that footballers these days can go on at least until their mid 30’s.

It looked particularly good because we had a few young good center backs in Steven Taylor and Peter Ramage (plus Huntington and Edgar) who would benefit greatly from Sol’s experience.

Well – for whatever reason Roeder wanted more youth in the side and so Sol went to Portsmouth and had an excellent season there.

Could it be the planets are lining up so we can actually get Sol to Newcastle in the summer?

Sol Campbell

There is news being reported today that Sylvain Distin will join Portsmouth after becoming disenchanted with all the takeover talk at Manchester City. Distin is a free agent and it is reported the 29-year-old will sign for Portsmouth within the next fortnight.
While we have always believed that Distin would be a good acquisition for Newcastle – this news means that Sol Campbell could now be available from Portsmouth.

Sylvain Distin

Campbell’s girlfriend is the daughter of a Tyneside businessman and therefore a move to Tyneside would certainly suit him domestically.
We believe Sol still has a few good years left in him – and who else but to bring the best out of an aging star than our very own Sam Allardyce – that has to be an additional attraction for Campbell.
It would be a great signing for Newcastle – and would quicken Steven Taylor’s development to the full England squad – so watch out Ferdinand and Terry!

Though call wether to sign distin on a free transfer, or buy sol from portsmouth.
But in the end, I would buy Sol, at the right price off course, because I think Taylor/Ramage would benefit more from Sol’s experience than distin’s. Where has Distin played besides Man City? And has he any international exp. with france?

Jim – think it will be hard to get Harry to sell – UNLESS Sol has talked to him and specifically requested a move – for personal reasons. We know Harry is no fool though.

Soren – Distin played for Newcastle for almost a whole season back in 2001-2002 while on loan from PSG. We wanted to sign him – but he turned us down for more wages from Manchester City (Kevin Keegan was then manager).
It didn’t go down well with Bobby Robson and the fans at the time.

jim, i take it you are a pompy fan! well, to be honest, ithink we will sign campbell, he has a year left to go with ‘Arry’ down south and then he is a free agent anyway. plus, how many times have we heard managers coming out and saying ‘there is no way _____ _____ will be leaving’. then what do you know, the player leaves. carrick for one, owen hargreves now. gallas, andy cole. the list goes on and on forever. Ed is right, if sol goes up and says i want out then he will have to go, the only thing ‘Arry’ could then do is try to get as much money as possible.
Yes, i think sol would look mightly fine in the black and white plus we’d love him to join.

Well, if we cant get to sign Sol, then i think we should definitly sign Distin.
Also hoping for Ben Haim. Maybe try to sign Luke Young from Charlton.
Any news on sidwell coming to newcastle?

all signs are that sidwell is a done deal with chelski. if he has joined them then it shows that he will be happy sitting on his arse on the bench as that is surley all he will do down there. mind you, no official comments ahve been made from either sidwell or chelski so nothing is done until its on the line. look at milner last season. hours away from being a vile player and then bang – he is back with us and plays about three million games this season. i hope we give him the right wing permenant – he has guts and wears the shirt with alot more pride than the likes of dyer.

the old luque thing is a bit strange eh. he must be a complete wanker in training, thats all i can think cos we have never really seen enough of him to know why he is having all these problems. i mean, have we ever played him two games on the trot?? i rememer shearer a few times going 8 games without a goal but we stuck with him. if he truly is a shit as obviously every manager thinks then why the hell did we pay nearly ten million for the bloke? i think luque is a lost cause and we have too many left wing men any way, zogs, duff and milner can go there plus the young lads. i would rather he dump luque to be honest.

Daz – not sure Allardyce will get the chance to sort Luque out – he’s out on loan to PSV Eindhoven next season – and if he does well – we would hope to sell him to them. Would be interesting though – Sam seems to always know how to get the best out of his players.

I admit every footballer has his price. Every footballer (Owen inc)!
However, Sol left Arsenal because of the pressure in which he continually found himself in.
He came to Fratton on a 2 year deal worth £50k aweek. Money is not a problem. He has bought himself a large house in the Poole area (Monte Carlo of England). Here, both he and his “northern lass” can be very happy. There is no comparison with living accomodation up there and down here other than a very favourable southern one!
His football has become relaxed and played with a smile again. Why would he want the pressure cooker/killer that is St James?
The fans down here are every bit as passionate as Geordies and in fact don’t boo after a bad performance! (Winners of supporters league !)
The fact that we have just had a great season and are looking to strengthen is also a bonus. Sol came here to help and make things happen, why go to a club that is being swept out yet again top to bottom and that finished in a very low position for its lofty requirements?
A big club Newcastle are but one that has only been the scrapyard for so many players over recent years.
Whats more it is being reported that not only is Sol happy with his present position but that Distin is now also about to sign for us giving our defense a very solid grounding for next season.
Just because Newcastle want a player from a “small” side like Pompey does not mean it will happen.
I think Geordies should wake up and smell the coffee.
Newcastle are a club whose fans aspirations outdo the teams/boards.
Consequently, whilst I believe that Big Sam is the man to finally wake a real giant. Its a giant that will not really wake for another couple of years and certainly without the help of Sol Campbell.

hum, me lord, you could be right, he may stay down south. then again he may not. he wanted to come to us last season BEFORE pompy but roeder did not want him due to his age. a big mistake we all think up here.
However, just cos we have had a crap season and you have finished higher than us (first time you have ever done that in the prem is it??) please dont think you can even suggest that you will be higher next year, i think alas, you will not. Your fans are pretty good too i will admit but i would like to see if your lot are still clapping and being 100% supportive if you have a season like we have just had – i think not. And lets be honest, why the hell should we be happy with the drivel that was served up to us for many games last season.
I hope that Sol does come, maybe his northern girl may be the deciding factor. its ok for you to say that its a poor comparison living up north compared to your Poole but i know where i would rather be. Besides which me Lord, i have mates down in Poole in the SBS and they are constantly scrapping in the streets every weekend! Nice place – not that i am saying newcastle is any better on that score though, ha.
P.S. you are right Ed, my mistake, he is 32 going on 33 in sept. well spotted. still a good buy though with 2 years minimum left in him.

Lord Nelson – I used to live down there in Hursley – when I was with IBM – it’s a beautiful place down there – no doubt. Also Harry is doing a great job down there – but we are selfish and would like Sol to come up here – it may not happen – but we’ll give it a go – and try to use his Geordie gal as a lever 😀
