Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce is reported to be after Wigan full-back Leighton Baines.
That doesn’t surprise us – if it’s true – because he has been one of our choices to come to Newcastle to fill the weak left back position. He’s young, ambitious and a team-mate of Milner and Taylor in the England under-21 team.
The Manchester Evening News is reporting that Sam Allardyce wants to sign the young left back as a step towards rebuilding our back four – which has been poor for several years now.
With Wigan under new management – there is bound to be some unrest among the players – and this would seem a perfect time for Newcastle to nab Baines – which we feel would be an excellent signing for us.
Baines is 22 (23 in December) and made his debut for Wigan Athletic in 2002. After that he soon became an established member of the Wigan Athletic team.
He was a regular when Wigan earned promotion to the Premiership in 2004-05, when he scored his first goal for the club, a spectacular strike from long-range against Ipswich.
Baines committed his future to Wigan in February 2005 despite being linked to a number of Premiership clubs, including Manchester United, Arsenal and Everton, and then extended his contract after impressive displays in his first season in the Premiership.
He is known for a terrific left foot and has played 153 games for Wigan scoring 8 goals.
While we cannot confirm the truth of this rumor – it certainly makes sense and we sure hope it’s true.
We’ll keep you posted on this and other developments. 😀
