Major Newcastle News Stories – 23rd May 2007

Here are the major news stories associated with the Newcastle club for today – in no particular order of priority.

  • The news that came late yesterday is that Damien Duff is out until November. Wow – some more injury problems for next season a short week or so since we finished the season. No doubt Damien is injury prone and this will not help his season. However, there’s always a bright side and it will give N’Zogbia a good run of games – and that should make him happy – assuming he is still here come August – which we expect him to be.

  • Worrying reports that Ben Tal Haim may be considering going to Chelsea. Various reports say that former Israeli coach Avram Grant, who is going to Chelsea in a few weeks time as Director of Football is persuading Ben Haim to move to Chelsea. We will run our own report on this story today. Newcastle need Ben Haim – so Big Sam we assume is already on the phone to Ben Haim – using his persuasive powers. As usual the transfer marker is hectic and it’s hard to know who’s going where – and which reports are true or made up.

  • Report presumably in the Daily Express (which we couldn’t find) so here’s Tribal Football news that Middlesbrough’s Chris Riggot may be a target for Newcastle. This is not the first time Riggot’s name has come up – so the story may be recycled – and it seemly unlikely to us. However Big Sam has his own ideas – so I guess we cannot rule this out completely.
Chris was at Derby County before joining Middlesbrough in 2003 where he has been injury prone and found it hard to break into the first team – making only around 70 appearances for the club.

  • Last report say that Paul Huntington may go out on loan to his home town team Carlisle – but we think he could get a better class of football in the Championship. Paul is a good player in the making and it’s important for him next year – at 19 – to get some games under his belt – but not at Carlisle. Also Neil McDonald, current manager at Carlisle – may be Big Sam’s assistant manager soon – which further clouds things.

Finally – best of luck to Liverpool today – in the Champions League Final against AC Milan – if the game’s anything like their last encounter two years ago – it will be a game to remember. This is what Newcastle should aim at – but we’re a million miles away right now – maybe even two million. 🙁

Maybe Duff wasn’t worth the 5 milion we spent to get him. Ben Haim would do best no to go to Chelsea, and Huntington should definitely go to the Championship on loan along with David Edgar.

Neil -agree – we’ll just have to hope Duff comes back late this year and gives us some performances. But it will give young Charles a good run in the side – he may then get as good as Milner – both need games. Not sure anybody but world class players should goto Chelsea right now – unless they want to warm the bench. Be very disappointed if we don’t get Ben Haim.
