Allardyce After Baines – Sign Him

We expect a whole new back-line to be brought in before the season starts and Baines is already known by Steven Taylor and James Milner (two of our best players last season) as all three are starters on the England under 21 team.

Baines is only 22 and made his debut for Wigan Athletic in 2002. He was a regular when Wigan earned promotion to the Premiership in 2004-05.

Leighton Baines of Wigan

Gareth Bale is also available from Southampton but he is quite highly priced (₤10M?) and we think Baines would be better value at about ₤5M – especially since he has already proven he can play in the premier league having made 153 appearances for Wigan and scored 8 goals. He has a terrific left foot and will only get better at Newcastle.
Left Back has been a problem spot for Newcastle for a few years now and Leighton would do a good job there.

News is that Martin Jol of Tottenham is also interested in Baines but today’s reports suggest that Gareth Bale will sign for Tottenham within the next 24 hours.

Martin Jol has slapped a 15M price tag on Jermaine Jenas – so he’ll stay at Spurs – that’s utterly ridiculous – but I guess it will keep him at the club.

Jlloyd Samuel has agreed a deal to join Bolton on a free transfer from Aston Villa – he was linked with Newcastle a week or so ago but we expect Big Sam has other fish for the right back position.

Liverpool’s Sam Hyypia has turned down a move to Portsmouth – so if Big Sam wants him at Newcastle to guide Taylor, Ramage and Huntington – the way is open for him – he would cost a nominal fee.

Yossi Benayoun has pledged his future to West Ham by signing a new five-year contract – his big pal Tal Ben Haim is a target for Newcastle.

News that Herman Hreidarsson from Charlton is joining Portsmouth on a two year contract and is Harry Redknapp’s second signing of the summer following Sylvain Distin.  This shows that relegated Charlton are willing to sell some of their players.

We like Charlton’s Luke Young at right back – and think he would be great acquisition for Newcastle.

Finally – news that Dimitri Payet , currently playing for FC Nantes Atlantique in Ligue 1, is a Newcastle target. No idea if there is any truth to this – but he looks a good player.
Payet has played for the French under-21 team and has just turned 20 years old.

Payet is a speedy winger with tremendous skill on the ball, is 5′ 7″ tall, two footed, so he can play on either flank. Dimitri played 30 times for Nantes last season.

He was born March 29, 1987 in R̩union Рsame place as a certain Laurent Robert Рas we recall.

Comments always appreciated.

Lets hope we soon get at least Baines. Hyypia is more a short term signing, but nevertheless he could add some experience at centre back, and since Redknapp is persistent with Sol will se his contract out, Hyypia is one of those players who are proven. Still I think Sol would be preferreable.

Baines would be good buy. Babayaro is not nearly good enough for Newcastle. Hreidarsson has gone to Portsmouth because of a relegation release clause in his contract… yet another centre back to pompey. Maybe this is because Sol Campbell is heading to us? What position does Dimitri Payet play?
    Great blog Ed!

Baines i am happy with, not too sure about Young have seen Charlton play plenty in the last few years and he although he had that one good season to get in the England set up he can be very dodgy. I would prefer Solano personally. I think we should get a RB maybe from France as they have some quality players in full back areas, e.g. Chimbonda. Cicinho at Real doesn’t play and is apparently available for around £5m. A regular for Brazil and learning of R.Carlos and Cafu is always good. As for CB Hyypia would be very useful, although i prefer Sol Harry won’t allow it. If we can get Ben Haim then Great but I still think we need one other then to really solidify that line. I really like Curtis Davies and am hoping that West Brom loose to Derby for this reason. I can see a superb partnership of Davies and Taylor with Baines on the left and a new RB in the future being quality and then possibly Krul behind. By the way i have seen Payet play a few times and he is a very very good player. He often uses the flip-flap Ronaldinho move and is good on both wings. As his contract is running out £4m would get him and I think he will be worth at least 3times that if he played 20 games next season. Gudjohnsen as well would be special. Future Team Krul, ?, Davies, Taylor, Baines, Milner, Parker, Barton, Payet, Martins, Gudjohnsen

Andy – whoops – I’ve corrected the piece saying Hreidarsson has gone to Portsmouth 😀
I’ve put a new piece up on Dimitri Payet with photo – and some background – he’s a winger – either wing – two footed – that would be good for us.
There is one line in TribalFootball on this – not sure where he got the info – but he looks a great young player – like Ronaldo – and it’s an exciting story if nothing else.

CAN I REFUTE THIS WE MUST BUY DIMITRI PAYET. I have a dodgy cancel that picks up Ligue 1 games and he is quality. £4m can play either wing both feet very strong, scores plenty. Has immense skill, e.g. He does the flip-flap move Ronaldinho does as well as very Ronaldo like moves. He is very quick, and a good crosser, loves to get forward. The only weakness maybe is his back tracking but he is only 20 and will only improve further. He may sign a new 3 year at Nantes or leave and i really hope we are going to push for a deal and not do the old ‘lets just wait he may not make it’ and then when he does we will pay £20m for him.

Ross G – good opportunity to see if Mike Ashley and Sam Allardyce together can get him – it would be great buy for us – especially at £4m.

half way through the season i would have paid out 6m jus to get him in asap because babs is awfull. i was at the watford FA cup game and he looked like a child, he was the slowestthing on 2 legs is have ever seen in my footballing life (mayb equal with Luque)

now i am torn between Baines and Shorey. both are very decent on the ball, can defend, commited to the club, British (english) so i would be reaslly happy with either…or both! bigger teams have 2 good players per position but we can hav duff or zog there for cover.
