There was good news for Newcastle fans yesterday as news leaked out that Mike Ashley had big things planned for Newcastle United – and wants to bring the glory days back to the club.
News like this will only put more pressure on beleaguered Chairman Freddy Shepherd to sell his 29% ownership in Newcastle and it’s clear these news leaks are a strategy by Ashley to get his intentions on Newcastle out to the fans.
42 year old Mike Ashley
This what the confidante of Mike Ashley said yesterday to the Times:
“The guy is someone who wants to build the biggest and the best and be successful,â€
“He has done that with the businesses he has built and he wants to do that with Newcastle United, too.â€
“He is putting a huge amount of money into the club and he does not want this season – a big opportunity and an important season -to be hampered in any way,â€
“He’s not going to get in the way of transfers and such like, far from it”.
Sam Allardyce is working hard to invest sensibly in the transfer market, and a long drawn out takeover battle between Shepherd and Ashley could negatively impact Sam’s dealings.
We hope that Shepherd very quickly accepts what is inevitable and sells his shares.
If Freddy holds out (which wouldn’t make him look good to fans – but what’s new?) a formal process must be followed by all concerned.
What that means is that
That will probably happen next week and announcements will be made as Ashley’s new group – St James’ Holdings – acquires 50%, 75% and 90% of the club.
We have seen this sort of thing happen in the takeovers of Manchester United, Liverpool, West Ham and Aston Villa recently.
We hope this will not be needed and the takeover can be done quickly – and does not get in the way of Allardyce’s attempts to bring in new players in the summer.
One man can make that happen – so it’s over to you Freddy.
