40 years Serving Tea at Newcastle – Thanks Kath!

Newcastle United tea lady Kathleen Cassidy has received a Special Achievement Award for her 40 years of service at Newcastle

The lovable and well liked 80-year-old was honored for her services at The Official Football Hospitality Awards held at St.James’ Park last week and reported on Newcastle’s official web site www.nufc.co.uk.

We’d like to offer our piece here in congratulating Kath on her fantastic achievement.

Kath Receiving Her Award – she’s the one in the middle 😀

Kath first started at Gallowgate in the early 1960s and has been a familiar face in the club’s press room ever since.

Jane Shepstone, director of catering (on the left in the above photo) said:

“Although Kath has been under the weather of late, she still turns up for every game, although we have managed to talk her into doing a shorter shift on matchdays now she’s 80.
“When she had a spell in hospital a couple of years ago, she had a home visit from our then manager Graeme Souness to see when she would be back at work.”

“Kath is a remarkable woman and when she was widowed a few years ago, she told me working at the football club kept her going, and helped her get back on her feet.

“She is loved by all the staff and management, she is so loyal, relaible, hardworking and full of fun.

“To be honest, I don’t know what Newcastle United would do without her.”

It’s people like Kath – who are the heart and soul of any club – and for 40 years she’s been the heart and soul of the Magpies.

We remember well – a couple years back – when Souness, Dyer and Bowyer were to make their TV apology after their bust-up on the pitch – and everything stopped as Kath brought in the tea – a moment frozen in time.
Kath recently celebrated her 80th birthday and journalists she had served got together to sing Happy Birthday and present her with cake and flowers.

Kath – we wish you many more years of happiness at the club – but as Jane says – make sure you put your feet up.

We’ll be sure to get you to the game when Newcastle win their next trophy – that’ll only be in a couple of years (promise!).

Take care.
