Barton Deal Will Be Completed – Ben Haim Deal Will Not

It looks like we may have some positive news today on the transfer front with a likelihood that the Joey Barton deal will go through. But it also is becoming clear that we have lost the Ben Haim battle with Chelsea.

Ben Haim

The £5.5million Barton deal is held up by a row over compensation between the player and City over a £300,000 loyalty payment. The PFA is intervening and trying to reach a swift solution – when asked about the situation regarding Barton’s transfer this is what Sam had to say today:

“I’m not quite sure yet.
“Joey has gone on holiday, hopefully we’ll try to tie it off today, finally, and make sure he’s going to be a Newcastle player for next season.”

But we’ve lost the race with Chelsea on Ben Haim – and we just don’t know why we couldn’t have matched Chelsea’s offer initially of ₤3M/year – particularly when Sam knows Ben Haim well and he would play his heart out for Newcastle. This is what Allardyce told Newcastle’s official website today about the Ben Haim news:

“”It’s looking like Tal will be going to Chelsea, unfortunately.
“We have had a long, hard go, but I think the lure of the (former) champions has perhaps just pipped me at the post.”

Sam had identified the former Maccabi Tel Aviv defender as one of his top targets to strengthen a defense which has proved the club’s major weakness for a decade. Allardyce’s knowledge of Ben Haim’s ability and character, their existing relationship and the fact he was available on a free transfer made him a hugely attractive target.

Well we lost him – and that’s it – we’ll need to move on. This is what Sam had to say today about how he now needs to shore up our defense:

“”We need to concentrate on defenders because we’re very short in that area
“We’ll try to strengthen that department by bringing in at least a couple of center-halves, a left-back and maybe a right-back. We want to have enough players, defensively-minded, to improve the Newcastle clean sheet record.
“That is going to be important. We’ve got goalscorers at the other end, with the additions of Mark Viduka and Joey Barton, but we must sort out the defensive side of the team to make sure that when we score goals, they win us three points.”

The Magpies have lodged a bid for Paris Saint-Germain defender David Rosehnal – who is also being chased by Borussia Dortmund. However we have bid around ₤2M for a player PSG value closer to ₤3.4M so there’s no agreement yet between the clubs on the price. We are also said to be pursuing Habib Beye of Marseille and Sami Hyypia of Liverpool.
We think Rosehnal and Hyypia would be excellent acquisitions for us – with Sami Hyypia providing much needed defensive experience in the squad.

It doesn’t look like Sam is too interested in Curtis Davis of WBA – who is available for ₤10M .

If i was Haim i would go to Newcastle because:
    *He wont be 1st choice.
    *He is nothing special there.
*He knows Sam well and Sam know him.

For gods sake, dont mention Hyypia like he is going to make us any better!!!, this guy alone cost Liverpool a good 10 goals last season. Lest have a look at the Bundesliga for some top defensive players. Mertesacker would be a good choice even tho he is still young. If we go for experience, i would much rather see us push ahead for either Campbell, Cannavaro or Matz from Inter. As for the backs, i was really sad to hear that Sam didnt like Baines as i think he is top class, but Shorey is good as well. Luke Young who has been mentioned by the press is also a nice link.

valle – either of the full backs you mention would be good – also Bakari Sagna is a 24 year old Frenchman – and a great up and coming right back – currently at Auxerre and just made the full French side..here’s article on him.

Ed:… Oh yahh, forgot Sagna. He does seem to be a very good prospect. IMO we could do with 2 new back for each slot actually, now that big Mike has taken the 52% and cash should be available.

valle – the waves must have been traveling between us – i just put him up on the comment above – an excellent player who would be great at Newcastle. Well i guess Hyypia isn’t too well liked.
Yes – i saw the 52% news. He should get to 75% before month’s end – then he owns the club. Will still be July and August to bring in players with his money.

Good News according to Manchester City official site that Joey Barton is BSA 2nd signing for a fee of £5.8m . Interesting figure that . I am pleased as JB is a good player and will give us some power in mid field which unfortunately Scott Parker didnt.
So 2 down many to go .!! Feel better now after the Ben Haim situation . Lets see about these defenders now . Rosenhal ,Shorey ,Sagna Luke Young ? any others in mind Ed ?

Arthur – Great – the only other one is Habib Beye of Marseille – but his best position is RB apparently. We need to get Rosehnal though.

Ben Haim must be looking forward to watching a lot of football next season because he won’t be 1st choice at chelski. He may not have earned as much at newcastle but he would have been one of the 1st names on big sams team sheet. Just goes to prove modern day footballers are only after one thing and it seems that regular first team footbal comes second to cold hard cash!!

Has anyone been watching the U21’s championship. Think Royston Drenthe of Holland would be a good left back, ok he’s short but excellent cross, skill, tackle, pace. Only apparently we are after their striker Rigters, looks quite useful. With a lot of the Premiership Clubs being loaded now, it will be hard to get their best defenders with out paying way over the odds. i agree that we should go to the german league loads of quality defenders there, (Naldo, Juan, Merzelder, Mersacker,Pasenen).

Hypia is not useless and thoose comments sounds to me like they don’t have a clue what there on about. Most newcastle fans would love Hypia and most Liverpool fans would agree that he was and still is a quality premiership player. Just because someone hasn’t had the best of seasons doesn’t automatically make him a bad player (look at dyer), every top interational is intitled to a bad season in thier career, otherwise there wouldn’t be anyone to go for at all if everyone thought like Valle. You mention Campbell which kind of makes you hipporcritical.
