Newcastle Challenging Arsenal for Frenchman Bakari Sagna

Newcastle and Arsenal are again said to be chasing French right back Bakari Sagna. This is a player we have already reported Newcastle being interested in – and it looks like this one may be heating up again.

Bakari Sagna

Arsenal are in prime position to get Sagna but Sam Allardyce believes he can attract the Frenchman to Newcastle because of the offer of first team football – which he would not be guaranteed at Arsenal. Apparently Arsenal have already lodged a bid of £6M with Auxerre and are now waiting for permission to speak to the player.

Newcastle have now entered the race and boss Sam Allardyce is eyeing up the highly-rated right-back after recently missing out on Tal Ben Haim, who signed for Chelsea last week.

Sagna, who is 24, is determined to leave Auxerre as he believes he needs to be playing for a high-profile club to keep his place in the France team. He has recently received his first call up for the full French National side (on May 24) for the French Euro 2008 Qualifiers against Ukraine and Georgia. He is 5’ 9” tall and has played 87 times for AJ Auxerre with no goals. Sagna has represented the French under-21 team during the 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship and plays at right back.

He is thought to be one of the best up and coming right backs in Europe – and we think he’d be just a great buy for Newcastle.

We need to get in for him now and at the very least have Sam talk to him about his opportunities at Newcastle – which would be substantial.

Comments welcome.

He sounds like a good prospect for the future. But not sure we can capture him from Arsenal. But if Sam can pull it off it would be great.

i doubt arsenal really want him considering we already have hoyte, eboue, gilbert as well as kolo and djourou who can play there. what would be the point of signing another right back

I’m not sure he’s a player Arsenal is interested. It’s just the newspapers and agents at play; don’t think Arsene has tabled a bid for him. Arsenal is looking for Left Winger, a supporting striker and a supporting centre back. We already have Eboue, Hoyte playing there and Djourou and Kerrer Gilbert can also play there and Eboue, Hoyte and Djourou all have Champions league experience so we don’t need an additional right full back, it will be a luxury and not worth. We also have so many technical players in central midfield where Sagna can also play but we don’t need him. Don’t think Arsene is shopping for him. Newcastle can go for him. I’m sure its the agent who are blowing this out of proportion to make more money. Arsenal not have so much money to throw about, we have the stadium to pay.

Thought that we would have signed at least 2 defenders by now. Big Sam keeps on banging on about getting the squad together before pre season training starts to get their fitness levels up so we can finally hit the ground running for once. We shall see….

The lure of playing for Wenger maybe ‘too good’ to turn down.

Whether we can capture him,it may be up to Arsenal. Arsenal can play ECC and there are many French including their manager Wenger. Sagna may choose the gunners over us. But I think the determination of Arsenal to get him is not so strong. It’s hard to believe that Arsenal will spend 6m pounds on a right full back. And Arsenal has a good right full back Eboue and Toure can play that position too. So I believe we have the chance to get him.

Lin – good point – whereas we need two center backs and two full backs.

Well – he’s a good player and you would expect good teams in for him – like Newcastle 😀

As much as I’d like to kick him in his bollocks, you have to respect Wenger’s record of finding brilliant young French players. I hope we get him up here!

Eddie – you’re right and there’s probably less than 3 weeks to go now – we must get in some defenders – would like to see at least 4 – say 3 before training starts.

Oli – Wenger has been nothing short of brilliant in his assessing of young players – that’s one reason we need to get Bakari to Newcastle.

Arsenals defence was very poor last season so buying Sagna and Havard Nordtveit would replace Senderos and the defensive players taking part in the African cup at the start of the season. Sagna will come to Arsenal because of the prospect of playing in the CL

Seems to be the same old story to me. Newcastle will always be 2nd choice for these top players as we can only offer prem league and the likes of arsenhole can offer cl and uefa. can see this close season being very frustrating for BSA and all of us too.

His motivation for leaving auxerre is to keep his place in the French team – for right or wrong, I am not sure we have a track record of providing that platform for the France national team.
