Major Newcastle News Stories – 18th June – 2007

Here are the major news stories associated with the Newcastle club for today – in no particular order of priority.
There’s quite a bit of new news breaking after not much happened yesterday.

  • The Journal has hinted that Big Sam is more interested in Anelka and Diouf than Fredi Kanoute – after Sam gave an interview to Luke Edwards of the Journal. We run a piece on these two – wouldn’t be at all surprised if Diouf joins us – not so sure about Anelka.

    El Hadji Diouf

  • News that Newcastle seem willing to let our flying winger Alan O’Brien move on – but it seems more like Alan has rejected contract offers from Newcastle because he wants first team football. We really haven’t given O’Brien a chance at Newcastle and would prefer we keep him – but play him. Anyway Celtic, WBA, Wolves and Leicester are interested in him as a free agent. We really do need to start playing our youngsters more – otherwise they will move on to teams where they will get games.

    Alan O’Brien

  • News today that both Juventus and Roma are interested in Craig Bellamy – who is on sale for ₤12M (outlandish fee). Craig would be interested in a move to the continent – and it will probably help his game – as long as gets to play. Reports suggest Claudio Ranieri is interested in Craig for Juventus.

  • England Under 21’s scored a good 2-0 win over Serbia yesterday in a game marred by racial chanting by the Serbian fans. We really have to stamp out this ridiculous behavior – and we hope UEFA takes strong action here. Our boys Milner and Taylor played the whole game and they set up England’s first goal after 5 minutes. England now play Holland in the semi-finals – and Serbia (who had already qualified as head of their group and played a weakened team) will play Belgium. It would be a boost for English Football if the boys can win this thing outright – certainly they are doing very well.

    Taylor and Milner

  • News today that Burussia Dortmund are ahead of Newcastle in the race to sign 6’3″ Czech David Rozehnal. This is starting to look like the Ben Haim transfer – where it goes on for ages – and then we miss out. Surely something will be decided soon on this one. We hope David comes to Newcastle.

  • Late news that we may be in talks with Liverpool about acquiring Sami Hyypia. Also that Bordeaux fullback Julien Faubert may be a target for both Newcastle United and Middlesbrough. Faubert has been in talks with AS Roma but the Serie A club refuse to meet his £3.5M price (seems high). Faubert’s agent warned Roma that he already has firm offers from the Premiership for the right-back. Wonder if that’s Newcastle in with a solid offer?

    Sami Hyypia

  • Here’s another quote from Brian Clough – the true big-head – who managed Hartlepool, Derby County, Brighton, Leeds and Nottingham Forest – and in 273 games for Middlesbrough and Sunderland scored an amazing 251 goals.

“If I had an argument with a player we would sit down for twenty minutes, talk about it and then decide I was right!”

We’d appreciate your comments on these stories.

Sorry to hear about both O’Brian and Rozehnal. O’Brian as you have written never really got a shot at Newcastle and its a shame, as he is playing more than okay for Ireland. As for Rozehnal goes, it would be a kick in the bonkers, if we are to miss out, yet on one of our defender targets. But then I think he will choose Newcastle over Dortmund because, 1, it doesnt get any bigger than playing in the premier league. 2, Dortmund only just survived in the bundesliga this year. Can’t really see why he should choose Dortmund over Newcastle, as he would be a first team player both places.

Soren – yes – there may be a chance for Rozehnal – really hope he signs for us. Good point – if he’s ambitious he must sign for us – once Sam has talked to him.

I think the main issue with Rozehnal is our £2m bid when they want £3.5m. Its good in one way that Sam isn’t willing to pay over the odds, but then worrying that we are looking at players who aren’t really worth top dollar.
If Hyppia comes in then he could work well as cover for the back, taking some pressure off Taylor and allowing him to rest a bit, but we will still need an experienced but younger partner.

We cannot surely miss out on another target! Seems like he would be a player who is really suited to the premiership.
Hasn’t Sam already said that he is working hard behind the scenes and we are not hearing about who we are missing out on.
Plus, when Ashley finally delists us and has a free reign, we may find that the potential targets we have at the minute pale into insignificance compared to who we may be going for then.

It is not the first time Newcastle lose the players in front of there nose….I will cross my fingers so we don’t get the emergency players that is int good for our beloved team. Big Sam should be quiet about his future transfers, and talk about the players in the press when it is 90% certain they will play for us next season!

To be honest I don’t think that Sam will be after forwards, when we have 3world class forwards.
The best days of Sami Hyypia are over, maybe we should try to get Marco Materazzi to our club, he has good experience, Steven Taylor and Ramange should have a lot to learn from the world cup winner 2006.
It was a big mistake not to try to get Woodgate to our club, but thats life!
I have 100% faith on Big Sam, and know that he will get the right players to our club;).

És – I think the main problem are the agents trying to increase the price for the players by leaking the transfer stories to the press.

Would be nice to hear BSA announce that he has agreed a budget with Ashley for this summer (even though I wouldn’t expect him to say how much it was) and then get a couple of £10 million players in whilst we can.

Hyypia is shite. Campbell would be a better buy.

Outlaw – agree with you – but don’t think Campbell is available – sure he was first choice for Sam – but think Hyypia’s use is more in bringing along the young kids – and provide some overall experience in squad – for the defense.

with regards to Rozehnal – ive just been speaking to someone with far more football knowledge than me and he says that he will sign for NUFC and the deal is almost done – could be rubbish but he’s usually in the know… i for one hope he’s right on this one!

Cathal – don’t think we really gave O’Brien a chance. Roeder refused to let him goto Wolves last year on loan – but then didn’t play him – so we are letting somebody go that we really don’t know all that much about – he plays great fro Ireland.

Greg – i agree we need 2 center backs – a starter with Taylor and then someone like Hyypia as cover. Would aslo like to see us bring in 2 full-backs.s How about Sagna, Rozehnal (or Curtis Davis), Hyypia and Shorey.

Ed – Sagna, Rozehnal (or Davis), Hyypia (only as experienced backup, not starter) and Shorey as you say, I think that would be good business. Also not too unliky signings, but never say never these days. *cough* Ben Haim *cough*

Soren – i’d be much happier when we have a few signings – been too quiet for the last few days.
