Newcastle Transfer Update on Rozehnal, Shorey and Hyypia

The news yesterday seemed very positive in our attempts to sign the 6’3″ Czech Republic International David Rozehnal. Let’s take a look at that situation and other moves we can make for center-backs. We’ll also take a look at the current situation at left back.

We hope that the transfer of Rozehnal from PSG completes within the next day or so – certainly this week.

This transfer saga seems to have been going on for months – but it’s only a few weeks. The news on this one is good – potentially very good. After Sam bid ₤2M for the Czech we have upped our bid to close to ₤3M and that’s too much for Burussia Dortmund – who are reported to have pulled out (the second time that has been reported).
However we need someone to be a starter with Steven Taylor and Rozehnal – at 6’ 3” – looks the part and can add that extra height we need at the back. He has appeared 26 times for the Czech Republic.
We need one more center-back to make up four counting Rozehnal, Taylor and Ramage – and that could be someone like Sam Hyypia. Sam would not be a starter but his experience will be a great help to our youngsters – for that reason alone we think he would be a good free signing for a couple of years. Of course Sam Hyypia is the perfect player that Allardyce could get the best out of – so he could also play quite a few games for us – his pace being one of the concerns here – but at 6’5″ he also has the height.
We would have preferred Sol Campbell to be honest – who could have also started regularly – but Portsmouth will not let him go – although his contract does run out next summer – and of course we know his girlfriend is from our area.
Curtis Davis has also been mentioned – and while he’s a good player the fee of between ₤8M and ₤10M seems very high compared with the value of Rozehnal at ₤3M. So we think we will mount a bid for Davis only if we cannot get Rozehnal.

nicky-shorey-23.jpg

Nicky Shorey

We had expected the left back we would go after is Leighton Baines – but a couple of things have happened in the last two weeks. He seems too short at 5’7″ to plug a weakness in our defense – which is a lack of height. Although Nicky Shorey is only a couple of inches taller that Leighton – he seems the one Sam is focusing on. Nicky would be a great buy for us – and we need to ensure we have some back up also – with Babayaro looking to leave the club.
The transfer fee of ₤5M seems reasonable for a player who looked comfortable playing for England against Brazil – and Nicky seems an honest player who does a lot of work at the back. We like Nicky a lot and hope that Sam goes after him very shortly. Shorey has played for Reading 231 times and scored 10 goals and is 5′9″ tall.

it’s a real pity we didn’t get our hands on ben haim. we do need at least two new central defenders, a left back and it has to be said, a right back too. basically a whole new defence.

don’t know too much about shorey… but hyypia’s speed has become a liability for liverpool in the last season or two and if he is one of three central defenders (i personally don’t rate ramage) then he will play many games.

i guess it is too early to speculate we have to see how this one plays out. i wish we knew what the situation is with funds now that ashley has operational control of the club.

Seems like some great transfer prospects. But any news on the right back position? Are we playing Solano with Carr/Dyer as backups, or can we expect Sam to bring in a new right back?
Personally I would prefer a new right back like Habib Beye, whos height is 182cm, as he is a great back and currently captianing Marseillie. Now back to topic, Rozehnal, Shorey would be great buys, and Hyypia as an experienced backup would fit good too, a little unsure about him, his height would certainly do good in our team.

My defencive signings would be Rozenhal, Baines, Drenthe, Richards, Davies, Coloccini and Phillip Mexes from Roma. Now Ben Haim has signed for Chelski, I would have loved Campbell, but its looking unlikely for him to sign. Hyypia though, after speaking with some Liverpool fans, although they reckon he is better than what we had, they say he is finished and wont sort the defence out. There is better defenders i think such as what I have listed above.

I know this is ambitious but if we have the funds then why not? I think we should go for Johnny Heitinga from Ajax, who can play at right full-back or in midfield. If we get rid of Stevie Carr then we could have Heitinga and Solano for right back, whilst whichever one doesn’t play can compete with milner for the right midfield slot. I know Big Sam wants 2 players for every position but I feel this option would satisfy both positions with only 3 players, something which I feel is needed in order to maximise the usage and growth of Milner. Dyer could also be used as back up for these positions if needed.

Paul – It is know that Hyypia didn’t enjoy the best last season, but in his defence I’d say he still has experience, and could be a good mentor for Taylor and Ramage. If he was bought it would be as a backup, hopefully, and because of his experience.

Getting into the top 6 is more about beating Everton Bolton Spurs at home and Derby Birmingham and Makums home and away than it is about getting a highly creditable draw with MU Rowdies. To do that we need big strong solid reliable players down the spine. Against most of that list Hyypia can probably read the game well enough to stay out of trouble. We can leave him on the bench when Ronaldo is playing. In my opinion a good addition for next 2 years. Agree Ramage isn’t there yet and needs to show something quickly.

Len Smith – Agreed, Hyypia would do good in some games, and other where the opposite team has speedy/technical player like ronaldo, he could be on the bench. You’re right on Ramage too, he does seem to have some potential, but he’s not quite there yet, and maybe an experienced player like Hyypia could give him some pointers and help him become at better and more secure player.

Why would Hyypia leave Liverpool to join Newcastle and not play every week? He’ll be used for the odd game at Liverpool and Rafa has already said he wants to stay for another year.

Jmes – good point on Huntington – had thought he would probably be shipped out on loan for next season to get some games…we’ll have to see. Paul and David Edgar both looked good – particularly at the heart of the defense – rather than full back.

Id like to see more of the young Canadian David Edgar. Obviously we need more defensive help. But you don’t want to under utilize another talented youngster just to see him slip away for more playing time. He had an excellent strike against ManU last year and is playing very well for Canada in the U-20s. Certainly not a regular starter yet, but someone I would like to see more of as time goes forward.

Paul Konchesky seems to be available for around 1/2 million and I think he’d be an excellent back up for the first team, and when he is performing well definatly pushing for a place in the first team . I would prefer Baines to Shorey as I feel he is already a good player and has excellent potential, whereas Shorey, although a good player, seems to have peaked already.

thing is though at the moment, the young lads are not going to win us a premiership or a cup or get us into the champions league. We need to go forward and we need good strong quality defenders such as mexes, woodgate, andrade, coloccini, to take these youngings on. hyypia though is not one of these to take them on i dont think.

Or we can always try to lure John Terry with a 140 ooo a week offer!! HaHa

Its all well and good wanting all these defenders or even being linked to these defenders but we (newcastle) arent moving fast enough to secure 1 of these defenders everyones going on about never mind a 3 defenders to partner taylor in defence!!
