Newcastle Transfer Update on Luke Young

Luke Young – the £3M-rated Charlton defender is surplus to requirements at The Valley, after manager Alan Pardew snapped up France Under-21 skipper Yassin Moutaouakil. It is being reported that Young is at the center of a three-way tug of war with Bolton, Newcastle and Aston Villa.

Luke Young

Luke Young at £3M we feel would be a good buy for Newcastle. Of the other two teams in for Luke – we think (no disrespect to Bolton) that Aston Villa will provide our biggest challenge. They recently agreed to let former Newcastle Defender and Northern Ireland Captain Aaron Hughes leave for Fulham – where he will join Lawrie Sanchez – his former Northern Ireland manager.

One thing we probably have in our favor is that Luke has played with our former captain Scott Parker and we would think if Luke wants to get a personal view of what it’s like at Newcastle Scott would give Newcastle a positive recommendation. He would also get games at Newcastle and stay in the Premiership.

It would be good if Luke can play both full back positions and we seem to remember that he did do this at Charlton (and England) on occasion. He turns 28 in July and started his career at Tottenham where he made 58 appearances with no goals. In 2001 he moved to Charlton where he has made 187 appearances scoring 4 goals. He has represented England on 7 occasions scoring no goals.

He seems a hard working player with a good temperament and we do we believe this would be a good signing for Newcastle – and at a reasonable price.

Comments always welcome.

Not sure Parker would give much of a recommendation to him either!

If he has ambition, I think he would rather come to Newcastle. Bolton might be in Europe next season but they are a championship side the season after.

dont think smith is a good buy, he’s overrated and how can we guarantee him a game if we keep owens, martins, viduka – I’d rather see shola and carrol play before racist smith

Would be a good signing if we can pull it off. Dedicated, consistent and reasonably versatile. Can’t see him going to Bolton; as mentioned, their squad is falling to pieces now that Allardyce has left, and I doubt that Sammy Lee has the pulling power to replace those who will leave with like-for-like.

If he -is- a racist, might as well pair him up with Barton. Insert Dyer in between. Got Martins/Owen up front. Black/white/black/white.. just like our kits, eh!
