Major Newcastle News Stories – June 24th – 2007

Here are the major news stories associated with the Newcastle club for today – in no particular order of priority.

The news today is that the Newcastle Board of Directors are being asked to resign but Chairman Freddy Shepherd will stay in place.

  • The Sunday Sun this morning is reporting that Mike Ashley has asked the current Board of Directors at Newcastle to resign. Only Freddy Shepherd will be retained to offer some continuity at the club. We run our own piece on this and basically it is good news – although a number of fans will be disappointed that Shepherd is staying (but probably not for too long).

  • David Rozehnal has spoken (at last) about his pending move to Newcastle – and he talks glowingly about the club and it’s history. Calling the club huge he also talks about being where legend Alan Shearer played. It’s a good read for every Newcastle fan.

  • News in the Sunday Express that Rafa Benitez has rejected a move for Newcastle’s Michael Owen – in exchange for Craig Bellamy and left-back John Arne Riise (Nice try Sam!). That would have been a great move for Newcastle but unfortunately for Sam – Rafa is not that stupid. Riise especially would have been an excellent capture for Newcastle.

  • News from the People that Middlesbrough have had a ₤6M offer accepted by Manchester United for Alan Smith. We thought Alan was tied up at Newcastle – reported by a Daily Mirror exclusive only last Friday – and we run our own piece on this update. Well we guess Alan is not tied up yet – but what is really going on here?

  • There’s a story in the News of the World today that Sam Allardyce has lost out to Jose Mourinho for free agents Steve Sidwell and Tal Ben Haim. he says it’s hard to compete with Chelsea right now. Well that’s a reality and we run our own story on this – but remember everything changes over time.

  • Finally here’s some quotes that miss whatever they were trying to say – to lighten up the day

‘Shay Given has shaken off a broken nose to play.’ – Grandstand reporter

‘Hughes was not a great deal more reassuring, his lack of a left foot again being apparent.’ – Sunday Times

‘Ben Thatcher is only 20 but he’s already played for the England Under-21 Side.’ – Anglia TV presenter

As we get new and worthwhile Newcastle news during the rest of the day we’ll add these to this report if necessary. We’d always appreciate your comments on these stories.

If Ashley is ‘asking’ all board member to resign I am presuming he has his own people to come in. I would also presume these ‘people’ would be more buisiness orientated than football orientated which I personally do not think would be a bad thing as after all in this day and age football is big on business.
The one thing I find strange is why Freddy Shepherd would not be asked to resign when Bruce Shepherd, Timothy Revill, Douglas Hall and Allison Antonopoulos would be? The only thing I can think of that makes any sense is that upon selling his shares to Ashey Fred had some sort of agreement (either written or verbal) where as he stayed on as chairman.
No doubt he is still on the wage bill too!
Ashely should just have a clean sweep and start a fresh after all the club couldnt be run any more poorly than it has been under Shepherds guidance, huge losses on player transfers (Marcelino, Maric, Viana, Robert etc etc) and massive pay offs to under acheiving managers (Souness, Gullit).
I think a more buisiness type board room run by Mike Ashley would be a breath of fresh air to this great club, but IMO Shepherd must go too.

Greg B – presumably Shepherd is there for continuity – but that shouldn’t be for too long – one season at the most i would think – it does make some business sense.

Agree Ashley will run business well – and so much better than it’s been run for the last 10 years.

I`m from Norway and in my opinion John Arne Riise isn`t a good capture for Newcastle. There are several better left-backs out there, believe me.

With Henry off to Barca, will we be able to hang on to Owen or/and Martins?
If not Smith would be a fine replacement for one of them.

I’ll lay an odds on that Shepherd has already been asked to leave and refused and is working out his 2 year notice period. All being handled diplomatically in the background so that his isn’t villified by the fans and Ashley doesn’t have to go through a legal wrangle and was probably agreed to get the sale of his shares to go through. Douglas hall will give his 3 months notice and take a nice fat 2 year pay check as well. The others were all on temporary contracts and will walk away with nothing unless there is a sweetner in there from Ashley to make them go quietly and quickly. I suspect that while Sheperd has been used to running contract negotiations etc, the continuity he will provide will be purely titular and that Ashley will have his own team in place very quickly.

its just common practise in business u buy a company u get your own blokes to run no big deal happens to 99% of companies that get bought all the staff stay but the board leaves hopefully the new board can do a better job as for freddie i think he is just there for the season ashley had to spin him a yarn to get the shares and whats another season to get complete control we all know freddie will have no power anyway.
As for alan smith i cant say im a huge fan great work rate gives 1005 every game but sometimes that aint good enough if a player is twice as good and only plays at 60% ! why do we need him owen , martins , viduka , ameobi , caroll and the 2 we r unsure of r the little ones so surely we would go for a player who is neither a goal machine nor has great areal ability so id leave it let boro have him for 6 mil ! we have bigger fish to fry
I am getting quite excited about some of the rumours i remember chatting to ed about an all english back 4 of taylor davies richards and bains as while some of these look far from the truth richards would be a huge signing for us and i i can only dream of coming true so please dont disappoint me sam 😉
