Middlesbrough After Alan Smith – What’s Going On?

It is now being reported in the People that Middlesbrough have had a ₤6M bid for Alan Smith accepted by Manchester United and Gareth Southgate is off to Florida – where Smith is vacationing – to try to tie up the deal before competitors Newcastle and Sunderland can do much about it.

Alan Smith

We thought 25 year-old Smith was tied up at Newcastle for ₤3.5M – reported by the Daily Mirror on Friday as an exclusive. That doesn’t sound like being too true now – and some exclusive! In fact the Sunday Mirror are also reporting today that Shepherd is being sacked tomorrow as part of the whole Newcastle Board being ousted. Our understanding is that Shepherd will in fact be the only one to stay on – at the request of Mike Ashley himself – for continuity at the club (which makes sense to us from a business viewpoint).

The reports are that neither Sam Allardyce nor Roy Keane have yet lodged bids with Old Trafford, leaving Southgate in the driver’s seat right now. Alan Smith has realized he no longer has any future at Manchester and will move on – to which club is still not clear.

While this is the silly season we have to be aware of some of these reports – and we are also guilty as charged for reporting the Mirror’s exclusive. But we thought the signing of Alan Smith at ₤6M was good business – and while ₤6M is closer to what he’s worth – Newcastle could still end up signing Alan.

I just can,t make up my mind about Smith coming to Newcastle. The good thing about him is the fact that he,ll run himself into the ground every time. He,s just never really seemed that dynamic to me.I think though at 3.5 mill he,s well worth it and we should,nt loose money at that.Would think twice before chasing him with the checkbook though.

I hope for once the lure of the BOG club wins out and Newcastle get their man, what was the name of that team when Viduka and Smith last played together.

I thought it was obviosly not true when the daily mirror was the only paper reporting it. I tend to only believe things when i hear them on skysports news.
I especially would not believe the daily mirror, it is hardly the most reliable of papers out.
But saying that i would have been chuffed if we had gotten him for 3.5m. He is a passionate player and that is what newcastle need for next season.

joe – i thought that if it wasn’t true there would have been a denial or someone else would report it was untrue – convinced my son last night why it had to be true – oh well – wrong again – win some lose some 😀

Once again a newspaper decides to make a bit of money from us by publishing crap! But we fall for it everytime.
It was obvious Smith hadn’t been signed by the lack of other papers following it up!
I never believe speculation until the player is signed. And that still goes for Rozenhal.

i wouldn’t lose any sleep if we didn’t sign him, to be honest i never thought we would be signing him as the Mirror are getting as bad as the Sun for making crap up these days.

he’s a very similar player to scott parker, in a way. he’ll play his heart out for the club, run himself into the ground, but at the same time he won’t necessarily produce much on the pitch.

smith, like parker, is a grafter. you know he’ll put in a good shift for however long he’s on the pitch, he just lacks that final little touch of quality.

Never believe anything that is published in The Mirror, some of the stories they come up with are nothing short of pathetic. Terrible paper talk, I’m suprised so many people have been taken in by this deception.

the fact is that we don’t need any more attacking midfielder…or striker…that area is already good… but we need defenders (one center back and 2 full backs) and one more defensive midfielder… i hope sam’s not after any of them (smith, gudjohnsen). all sam talks about is making players happy…with so many good (also young, talented) players that would be impossible…especially this season when we don’t have so many matches…maybe next season when we’ll be in champions league 🙂

thank christ we are not getting smith. he is crap. can not score many goals so falls into the bracket of being a shit striker and is lost in mid field so he is shit there too. he has loads of grit and determination but that will only take a person so far. he is no good for us and is not as good as what we already have. thank god for midboro coming in with a very high amount of money for the donkey.

I have this feeling that Sam is after players we don’t even know about – hope we get some pleasant surprises next week – i guess our pre-training starts a week tomorrow – or at least that week.

Something just didn’t ring true about the story probably because there were no quotes from anyone at newcastle or in the smith camp.
FYI – The Sunday mirror actually states that shepherd will be the only survivor

It seems newcastle have been in for every available striker, and when the striker goes somewhere else, well Newcastle were out bid, obviously!
Newcastle as it stands have 5 available strikers, ok everyone 5. So wake up and smell the coffee, newcastle need D________, fill in the blanks.
The Mirror is very handy if you run out of toilet roll, but becareful if you use it to wipe your backside, it is extrememly likely it will get published.

    P.S.
Apparently Drogba is requesting a transfer to Newcastle. This will be in your daily used bog roll(also known as the Mirror) on Monday.

I’m a huge Smudger fan and I must admit I’m getting sick to the back teeth of all the to-ing and fro-ing… in many ways I bet Smudger is glad he’s out of the country whilst the madness carries on!! This rubbish weather isn’t helping my mood!!! As a Leeds fan I hope he’s still leaving Man U but in terms of where do I want him to end up, I don’t know, anywhere but down south – I couldn’t go watch him play it would be too costly and he’s a northerner through and through..
Basically guys, I think we should all grin and bear it and wait til something official turns up and try not to read the newspapers, whichever team you support. While all the millionaires are away the idiots at Fleet Streets are at play and it drives the fans mad….!!!
