Geremi Closer to Newcastle – Is Rozehnal Signed?

Things seem to be moving quickly with the opportunity for Newcastle to sign Geremi from Chelsea as a free agent. It is starting to look like Newcastle may have the edge on other clubs for the Cameroon International’s signature.

A Chelsea source has indicated Newcastle seem to be favorites for his signature. We also have a question on whether Newcastle have officially signed Rozehnal – since no announcement on this has yet been made by the club.

Geremi Sorele Njitap Fotso
(Also known as Geremi)

It is being reported that Newcastle representatives are meeting with Geremi and his agent in London and that Sam Allardcye is anxious to get a deal wrapped up quickly. A source close to Chelsea told the Evening Chronicle this afternoon:

“Geremi is out of contract at Stamford Bridge and we understand that he is talking to several clubs, including Newcastle United.
“From what we can gather he loved his time up in the North East with Middlesbrough, and Newcastle seem to be favorites for his signature.”

The 28-year-old – who has been a Cameroon international since 1996 – can play on either flank – so he could play at either left back or right back. He has also been known to play in midfield – as a defensive midfielder – so he certainly has great versatility and would be an excellent squad player for Newcastle. We don’t know right now which other clubs may be involved for Geremi. However, Middlesbrough – who Geremi spent a season on loan with in 2002-2003 – have indicated they are not in the race.

Certainly a player with Geremi’s versatility and experience is exactly the type of player Sam Allardyce is looking for. Let’s hope we can wrap this one up quickly – and that’ll be another defender on his way for pre-season training starting next week.

We’d also like to see some official announcement that we indeed have signed David Rozehnal from PSG for £2.7M – although communication has gone dead since yesterday afternoon on this one. We are assuming everything is still OK with this transfer – although it does seem a little strange that an official announcement has not yet been forthcoming.

On the positive side maybe Sam is awaiting so he can introduce both Geremi and Rozehnal together – if indeed the Geremi deal is that close.

His versatility will make him a perfect backup player. I still think we should try and add at least three more defenders to the squad though. Maybe Beye and Baines at right/left back and then Sol at centre back (experience, height and not too old). Also one really quality defender with all that cash BS has now maybe curtis davis – that would sure up our defence for at least the next 4 or 5 years.

I am sure the Rozenhal deal is tied up as Pavel Srnicek is quoted in the Daily Mail talking about what a great signing he is etc. which at least indicates he thinks that the deal is done.

A think he will. Maybe not first team though. He’s a versatile player, which Newcastle seem to have very little of. So he should be alreet. However a think with the reported £50 million kitty. Surely we should be going for bigger and better players???

I think he’s a good signing. He played well at Boro and Chelsea and has European and Premiership experience which will help the likes of Ramage and Taylor. I think Sam is trying to get Nicky Shorey and one more probably Hypia.

So far that looks like a possible squad could be
With a few of the kids pushing for a place in there – Edgar, Triosi, Krul, Carrol and LuaLua probably the pick of the crop at the minute.
If BSA can get that lot working at their full potential that’s a top 6 squad.
I think if we can get three or four of those kids out on loan (I think Krul already is) then we can start to bring them on. If you look at Liverpool/Arsenal/Manchester they mix good buys with home grown talent. Something I hope we can emulate and I think Taylor may be the first sign of that (Arguably Ameobi is, but I dont think he has an international future ahead of him)

I’ve heard a few mentions of Coloccini on here these last few days – excuse my ignorance but could anyone shed any light on him and explain why his asking price is so low if he is as good as people are stating (3-4mil i saw mentioned on here) ?

Darren – He’s been loaned out too much. Personally I think he would be a decent signing even so.

I mentioned the other day that he was priced at 3m. Thats because Olympiakos put in a 2.4m bid. Coliccini is suprisingly cheap hence the hast for a move. He first moved to AC Milan where he never really got in unsurprisingly with Nesta etc. So he went out on loan to Alaves, Athletico, and Villareal when he was an ever prsent for each but never perm signed due to at the time high fee, he eventually went to Deportivo whre he now starts and is rated one of there prize players. Many in Spain don’t rate him as much due to his non-nonsense ge rid style he isnt a ball playing CB. Another reason for his low fee is the financial issues at Deportivo. They need the money and so 3m could allow them to balance the books. He has experience of playing in Italy and even more in Spain and usually starts for Argentina with either Ayala or Milito (25 caps). He also played European footy for Milan and Depor and so has a great pedigree for us and would love to come as Depor are beginning to become a weaker La Liga side. Possibly the main reason for his cheap fee is that he signed a 4 year deal in 2004, and has threatened to buy out his deal next summer if they dont let him move on, and so technically means he has one year left so there negotiating weakened further. The final reason for his cheap price is that he has crap hair, actually i think that is another factor. He is in my mind though better that Rozehnal and almost 2 years younger. I would get Coloccini, Geremi, Beye, Davies, and maybe Shorey/Taiwo. With my back line Beye, Coloccini, Taylor, Taiwo with a back up of Geremi, Rozehnal, Davies, Ramage/Carr. Get rid of Baba and keep Nobby as another RM

Rozenhal has had his medical according to press but no confirmation if he has agreed to sign yet. He may be thinking the terms over first. Arsenal interested in Martins? I hope he stays, sam surely is under no pressure to sell and Oba said he wanted to stay. he may change his mind when he finds out Arsenal are interested. I think Geremi will also be a good freebie if we get him but our money we supposedly have for tansfers (50 million) should be spent on the defence. go out and spend big and get us some foundation to build from. I also cant believe press saying Nicky Shorey would prefer to stay at reading than come to the Toon. Has he banged his head or is he scared of the big stage and fantastic crowds and support we have.

    Could it be Rigters then?

Or what about that Royston Drenthe – he looks well good in the U21’s.
