Major Newcastle News Stories – June 27th – 2007

Here are the major news stories associated with the Newcastle club for today – in no particular order of priority.

The news today is that Sam Allardyce has been given a £50M war chest to bring in new players. He will be supported in this over the next two months by Freddy Shepherd and new Vice-Chairman Chris Mort. Given that Sam has brought in three good players for a net outlay of £1.8M and is after Habib Beye now for £2M – one wonders what he can do with £50M – or even £40M

  • Here’s our piece on the outcome of yesterday’s board meeting at Newcastle. Allardcye will be given up to £50M in transfer funds and it looks like Freddy Shepherd’s tenure at Newcastle will only last a few more months. Sam will now report to Mort – who will take over the day to day activities of the club. This piece focuses on the management side of the club following yesterday’s decisions.

  • News from yesterday’s meeting is that Sam’s key back-room staff from Bolton – Mark Taylor and Mike Forde will soon be joining Sam at Newcastle. Hopefully they can work their magic with reducing the injuries that have always plagued Newcastle – especially over the last two seasons. This will be key for next season – that we can somehow control these injuries – and understand why they occur.

  • It certainly looks like it’s full steam ahead on the transfer market for Newcastle. The next target seems to be Habib Beye – from Marseilles – who is valued at £2M. Sam has the go ahead to speak to Habib – and he would be excellent signing for us and can play right back or center back. We had a piece on Habib yesterday on this site.

  • A long piece in the Journal by Paul Gilder on all the many events that seem to have happened since yesterday. Paul covers multiple topics in this piece and it’s worth a read. This includes the transfer of Rozehnal – who is expected to be introduced as a Newcastle player some time today. We believe the fee for Rozehnal was a low £2.7M.

  • A new story today is that Newcastle are after Geremi – who is a free agent at Chelsea. We have our own piece in this news today and believe Geremi would be another great addition to our squad.

  • Finally here’s some quotes that miss whatever they were trying to say – to lighten up the day.

“I would not say he (David Ginola) is the best left winger in the Premiership, but there are none better.” (Ron Atkinson)

“He dribbles a lot and the opposition don’t like it – you can see it all over their faces.” (Ron Atkinson)

“Ardiles strokes the ball like it is part of his own anatomy. ” (Jimmy Magee,)

why in the gods name do we want to sign geremi. if he was that good, then chelsea would not sell him, yeah a no he played for real madrid, chelsea and on loan at boro, but he is not the quality to get us back into the top4-6 teams in the prem in my view. what does anyone else think. am i right??

Just because Sam has £50m to spend doesn’t mean he has to. He can always keep some back until January to see where we need strenghtening. That would be the logical thing to do, not throw millions away on one player, Souness style!
He’s doing a grand job and I’m over the days when a big money signing will keep me happy. I’ve been let down far too many times by these so called huge signings.
The defence needs close attention that’s for sure. We’ve got Rozenhnal on board so far and we’re strongly linked with both Geremi and Beye. Both right backs although Geremi can be a utility player and Beye can play in the centre of defence. I’d like to see Sam splash out on either Baines or Shorey for the left back role. We are talking 5-6 million for each player. Either would do!
If Owen and Martins stay then we don’t need to replace them, the midfield is quite strong. So if Sam can get a good defence together then we should be sound. I can’t see where he’d have to spend anywhere near £50m.

I feel Geremi would be a really good addition and is a proven premiership performer. We have really lacked a decent utility player and Geremi would fit the bill nicely especially as a free transfer… and with our injury record could prove to be really invaluable to us. Although with the possibility of Baye coming in i don’t see Geremi walking into the side assuming he does join, but i see this move as another step in the right direction in terms of having a better quality overall squad and i personally hope it goes through.

chris – agree – he certainly would have difficulty spending 50M now – but think the point is – he is now unencumbered by any funding problems.

Teves would be the ideal signing for NUFC. He’s proven, hard working and would be a legend at Newcastle. We have the money aim high and try and tempt him.He seems to have the right temperment to make the Toon Army love him.

Beye and Geremi would be decent buys, in terms of experience for the defence. But we still need to look at that left back position.

I suppose he is better than what we have had for a while. got to be better than carr at right back and can play midfield right or centre if need to be. he did for boro and he was good and a remember him playing at real and he always played at right back or right midfield with campo. sam has done a great job so far. I expect to see more transfer’s now the board situation has been sorted out. It is no good spending 50 million on rubbish I agree, but there are top top players who we need, who we will have to pay for. I

I think £50 million is Press talk, I can’t see the new board of professionals announcing to the world how much they are going to spend, prices would double instantly. I think there will be considerable funds available but Ashley and the new board will only know the exact amount.

One signing I hope Big Sam does get is Mike Forde Bolton’s performance director. Here are a couple of articles that give an insight into what Sam is trying to build at NUFC; it’s not Bolton but Milan that’s his model.

With funds now being released I think we will see movement on the transfer front. If we are looking for an experienced premiership central defender I’d rather prise Sol Campbell away from Portsmouth than Hyypia from Liverpool. Pity we didn’t get him last year for free.

I agree with some of you. I think Geremi would be a decent acquisition however I do think we have set our sights too low on targets. I agree £50M doesnt have to be spent, but considering Ashley wants us up there he feels it SHOULD be spent to get us up there. If we carry on at Allardyce’s spending of frees and 2m we could have 25 new players soon. We do need to look at players who are younger with potential, wot happened to Danny Rose at Leeds we were after him. Then there is maybe Donk for Holland, Davies, Kompany, Drenthe, etc basically if Sam insists on older cheaper players then we should invest on our youth more as Liverpool and Tottenham have and are currently doing.

Geremi would be a class signing. He has proven Premiership experience, he can actually defend which is more than can be said for Carr, and has anyone seen his free kicks? My god. I’m not saying he is our long standing answer to our right back problems but as far as free tansfers and cover for the first team (if we sign another quality right back) go, its a fantatsic bit of business. As far as the 50mill kitty goes, how about bringing a bit of flair to Tyneside? Kaka anyone?

You are right Paul P if Geremi was any good we would have had him back at Boro but there are better out there and Geremi was only ever hit and miss when he was last in the North East.

But for nothing Geremi would be a great acquisition for us as a squad player – at the very least. These are types you need in a squad – if they don’t play every week they can at least come in for big games and do a job for us. Obviously Big Sam wants a bigger squad this year.

Olympiakos are after Fabricio Coloccini for something like £2.4 million according to Sky Sports. Why aren’t we going for him especially at that sort of money, he’s quality.

Aaron and nightfall, How often do central defenders come from la liga and make an impact. (anyone remember marcilinho) Yes colloccini is proven over there but i think there is a good chance he would not suit the premiership and would be a flop.

    Let me see..

    Defence:Rozenhal ,Taylor,Davies,Beye,geremi,Baines,Shorey,coloccini.
    In midfield :Solano,Dyer,Milner,Duff,Emre Barton,Zogbia,Butt
    Attack:Viduka,Martins ,Owen and Shola…

Well i want either coloccini or davies..we need backup in the middle..either Baines or Shorey at the left ,and beye and geremi at the right it should be good..if we get all of them we have a very good squad. With 50mill it should be possible.

In the midfield we have Barton and Emre.Emre as the creative one,he has been good when he played this season, and Barton as the hard working one.A creative midfielder as backup should be good, just in case.Wingers do we have enough of.But Wright Philips can bloom out again and why shouldnt it be at St.James.(His price is high though).IF owen leaves we need another striker, and i would love to get Anelka. He has been outstanding for Bolton.Last year we had problems at the top ewen wid four or five strikers in the squad ,cause of injurys. If owen and martins stays,We should get a forth striker,in backup..a young talent maybe.Like the u-21 dutch striker drom NAC,but i would love getting Lita:D..Thats my opinion.
