Major Newcastle News Stories – June 28th – 2007

10:26 am, Thursday, June 28th, 2007 by Ed Harrison · 19 Comments

Here are the major news stories associated with the Newcastle club for today – in no particular order of priority.

The news today is that Arsenal are said to be after Oba Martins via his release clause of £13M. We’re not sure if Martins will leave – but it’s basically up to him. The same is true of our other expensive striker Michael Owen.

  • The big news today is that Arsene Wenger would like to take Oba Martins to Arsenal as a replacement for Thierry Henry. They are completely different players so we can only assume Wenger knows how he will be playing Oba. There is no doubt he has been an admirer of Oba for a number of years. We look at this story and conclude it’s basically up to Oba.

  • We take a look at a good quote from our own Mark Viduka at the Australian training camp in Singapore. Mark has no idea whether Michael Owen will be at the club next season. We have some news for Mark – we also have no idea if Oba Martins will be at the club next season. So it’s interesting to wonder who Mark’s strike partner will be on August 9th at Bolton. We also look at Owen’s position and for various reasons don’t think Michael will be going anywhere.

  • Good news today on Geremi – he has been at Newcastle’s training ground to meet with Sam Allardyce.
An Update on this is now included now in our report – Sam talked today to Sky Sports and says he has not yet been able to talk to Geremi who is on vacation – so the deal will not happen for a number of days.
A Chelsea source last night said he thought Newcastle were the favorites to sign Geremi. Another great free transfer for Sam – if he can pull it off.
We also mention the chase for Habib Beye – which we are also hoping will end in success. The acquisition of these two will go a long way to soothe the anxieties of some Newcastle fans who are concerned about the lack of defensive signings. If all goes well we could have Rozehnal, Geremi and Beye at the club by the time training starts next week – that would be great!

  • A couple of related stories on Newcastle.Newcastle have announced a multi-million pound drinks sponsorship deal with Carling. The four-year agreement, which starts on July 1, is one of the biggest of its type in British sport. Carling previously sponsored the Premier League and have backed the Carling Cup for the last four years, as well as Old Firm rivals Rangers and Celtic. The announcement brings an end to the Magpies’ long association with Scottish and Newcastle.

Former Newcastle utility player Aaron Hughes has moved to Fulham for £1M. We previously reported that his former Northern Ireland manager and new Fulham manager Lawrie Sanchez was anxious to take Aaron to London. Aaron is Sanchez’s first signing for Fulham and the London fans seemed to have welcomed the signing. Aaron will always give 100% and we always thought he was way under-rated while at Newcastle – certainly he could have helped us big time over the last couple of season – he was hardly ever injured.
Best of luck to Aaron Hughes – at least he will get a lot of games at Fulham – unlike last season at Aston Villa.

  • Finally here’s some quotes that miss whatever they were trying to say. Today we concentrate on some of David Beckham’s quotes – to lighten up the day.

‘Would it be fair to describe you as a volatile player?’ – Interviewer
‘Well, I can play in the center, on the right and occasionally on the left side.’ – David Beckham

‘I definitely want Brooklyn to be christened, but I don’t know into what religion yet.’ – David Beckham

‘Alex Ferguson is the best manager I’ve ever had at this level. Well, he’s the only manager I’ve actually had at this level. But he’s the best manager I’ve ever had.’ – David Beckham

Geremi, Beye and Rozehnal are 3 great signings. Would love it, if the three of them showed up at the training field next week. The best with it, is that it seems to be acomplished soon.

Just seen report on Sky Sports that ‘Newcastle want to finalise Ronzenhal transfer today’ as in today, 28th June 2007. So, he’s not signed for us yet?! Thought it was strange we’d had nothing official.

Nice deal with Carling though, more money for Big Sam.

  • 7 Ed Harrison // Jun 28, 2007 at 12:02 PM

Really strange for Rozehnal – but he’s coming – so that’s good. Had thought they may want to announce Geremi and Rozehnal together – if Geremi deal was close.

Wenger might be off to Real, so Martins needs to think about that

  • 9 PiraK // Jun 28, 2007 at 12:17 PM

I really want Martins to stay,he had a good season for us.At the same time i really want a young talented striker in too..Jared Lita will be exellent!

  • 10 Johnny Utah // Jun 28, 2007 at 12:18 PM

Left back should be up next at the start of next week. It seems like Sam is snifing around Chelsea, as previous managers seem to have done as well. Possibly another striker if Martins is on the way out, too. Alan Smith could still come this way…that would be a good signing.

Personally, I like the idea of bringing some Chelsea players who don’t get a lot of playing time to Newcastle; because, many of them have been important players for Chelsea when they won the two league titles.

I like the idea of bringing guys in who expect to win and guys who have something to prove. It makes the team confident and hungry.

I would like to see Wayne Bridge and the young French player, Bakari Sagna, brought in for LB. And if a deal could be made, why not inquire about SWP and make a double swoop? We could use the pace and option of a real quality winger who wants to get back into the England picture.

not another bit of Sam’s brilliance, Edmilson from Barca on a free?

  • 12 Greg B // Jun 28, 2007 at 12:39 PM

The word is that Rozehnal will be unveiled either this afternoon or in the morning along with at least one other player!
That Edmilson story sounds like a cracking effort by Allardyce if it is indeed true however id be surprised if we dont face stiff competition.
Id have thought favorite to be unveiled alongside Rozehnal would be Geremi who is apparently in the Toon this afternoon (.com website).

  • 13 Ed Harrison // Jun 28, 2007 at 1:00 PM

Greg B – really – so Sam may have held up the unveiling of Rozehnal because they had another player close. Not sure it’s Geremi because this morning Sam said he hadn’t yet talked to Geremi – so in a way that’s good because it’s another player he’s after – wonder if it’s Smith? If it’s someone nobody knows about that would be really impressive.

  • 14 Ed Harrison // Jun 28, 2007 at 1:03 PM

Wow – the signing of Edmilson on a free would be fantastic. He’s only 30 – young these days for a footballer – especially with his skill – things may be starting to roll. :D

  • 15 PiraK // Jun 28, 2007 at 1:49 PM

If we get Edmilson..i think the midfield is complete:D

  • 16 Ed Harrison // Jun 28, 2007 at 5:08 PM

Greg B – where did you get info on 2 players being introduced?

  • 17 Greg B // Jun 28, 2007 at 7:07 PM

Ed – From NUFC.com (regarding Rozehnal):

“A four year contract has now been agreed with the player and his club Paris St.Germain receive a fee in the region of £3m.

Rozehnal will be officially unveiled by Newcastle at some point in the coming days – possibly along with other new arrivals.”

Also they say that Geremi was at the training ground yesterday “Wednesday saw a fourth possible summer signing lined up by Newcastle, with Chelsea’s Cameroon midfielder /defender Geremi at the training ground for talks over a free transfer move.”

If Sam has today said he hasnt spoken to Geremi then it must have been a Geremi look-a-like :)

There was more detail on newsnow this morning.

  • 18 Ed Harrison // Jun 28, 2007 at 9:05 PM

So was it NUFC that said there would be two signings?

  • 19 Greg B // Jun 28, 2007 at 10:41 PM

Just speculation but it would look likley. If Rozehnal passed his medical Monday it would be fair to presume that he signed shortly after, maybe Tuesday. As a general rule the club would hold a press conference upon signing a new player and as this has not happened in this case and with specualtion rife that we are in for several other players (Smith, Geremi, Baines, Shorey etc) it would be fair to assume that unveiling Rozehnal has been put on hold for a couple of days untill Sam ties up another new player.

NUFC said Rozenhal would be unveiled in the next day or so possibly along with other new arrivals which sounds very promising to me as I cant think of any other reason why he hasnt been introduced as yet.
