Sam Allardyce Still Seeking Defensive Reinforcements

Sam Allardyce talked again this morning to Lee Ryder of the Evening Chronicle before he left for Graz – and discussed the ongoing quest to bring new defenders into the club.

Sam’s always worth listening to – so let’s see what he had to say and what we can then glean from his comments.

Sam Allardyce in Pensive Mood

Here’s what Sam had to say today to Lee Ryder on the transfer front:

“We’ll continue to move forward in the defensive areas. David Rozehnal is a big signing. But we’ve got few defenders at the club because I let go one or two who were out of contract. “That’s left a big hole in that area and we’ve got to fill it with the best quality players we can find.” “The left-back spot will be one of those positions we’ll fill.

“Obviously Babayaro’s still with us. He didn’t figure that much last year, but I’ll be interested to see such a fine player and whether we can help him in any way to make him fitter, stronger and better so that he can play and compete for Newcastle United in the last year of his contract.”

Very interesting the way Sam talks about Babayaro – if he said that about you – you’d probably want to try a lot harder than if you were completely ignored. To us that’s man-management magic again from Sam. No wonder he gets the very best out of his players – he’s even got me looking for my old boots. 😀
Before he arrived at Newcastle we had no idea he was such a personable and upbeat a guy.

The defenders we are still after include Edmilson, Beye, Hyypia and Shorey with some reports we may be after Brede Hangeland from FC Copenhagen. Hyypia will be more of a squad player – as we’ve discussed before – and if we get him it will be because of the immense experience he can bring to the squad. In addition he can bring a winning attitude to the squad – since he’s had plenty of that while he’s been at Liverpool.

Just for the record Hangeland is a 6′5″ Norwegian center-back who has played 45 times for FC Copenhagen (1 goal) since 2005. Before that he played 114 times for FC Viking and scored 6 goals. He has represented Norway 30 times with no international goals.

We think anyone of these would be good buys. However, not entirely sure about Brede Hangeland – since if we do get Edmilson wouldn’t it be overkill to have the Norwegian on board? Maybe Brede will be a real a target if Sam cannot get Edmilson for some reason – that seems to make more sense.

Wayne Bridge for me .He is a class left back great going forward and is solid at the back. Also good news is that Ashely Cole is ahead of him at Chelsea and a player of Bridges quailty may feel he should play first team football. Also a deal could be strucked we see to have a good connection at Chelsea. We have just bought Geremi from them Babayaro Parker and Duff. Its a very possible move.

If we buy Edmilson, I think he could well end up playing as a holding midfielder (like his compatriot, Gilberto at Arsenal), while Barton/Dyer push forward to support the stikers. If so, then we will definitely need another centre back, e.g. Brede Hangeland. This could be what BSA has in mind…… you never know.

It is so good to see us buying players early in the summer not at the last minute like we normally do. This give the players time to bed in and get to know their team mates. I’m starting to look forward to the season which I haven’t done since Sir Bobby was in charge.

I’m delighted with Rozenhal and Geremi signings. We’ve only spent just less than 2 million thanks to selling Parker. We must sign at least 3 more quality defenders and to be honest, Baba has quality and if BS can get that quality out of him, he’ll be an excellent squad player.
Not heard anything from all those people of the, ‘Give Roeder a chance’ stance

sweet to see Germi take plase, I’t looks like big sam nows what hees dooing! I am a “norwegian geordie” and have seen brede hangeland play a few times, after his last national match he was compared to Hening Berg (former man u, Rune Bratseth (former werder bremen) and said that our national team have not had that good of a center back since the “old times” when Egil Drillo was in charge. He is a tall fella, and have a good pass an calm over him, a really good prospect for the future! But I dont’t think he is ready for a regular plase yet, if he comes in that of course.. Howay the lads, greetings from norway!!
ps. sorry for my bad english

Hey Toppsy, Roeder wasn’t all bad. Many of the things BSA is putting in place were highlighted by Roeder – scouting system, training methods, technology, ect – it was just he didn’t have a big enough personality for the NUFC job. He was promoted beyond his capabilities by FF, who was looking for a manager on the cheap. It’s a shame really as I think we have lost an excellent academy manager who would have readily bought in to what BSA is trying to achieve and began a production line of new talent for the club.

We definitely need 2 new fullbacks Bridge or Shorey on the left and Beye on the right. I would keep Baba for cover but get rid of Carr. Geremi can cover at rightback and Beye at centreback. How about a big bid to get Woodgate back, he’s the best defender I’ve seen in a black and white shirt and he must be thinking the smoggies are going nowhere but down. Wonder if he has a get-out clause?

i honestly don’t know what does anyone see in edmilson… i belive sam wants him ONLY because of his winning mentality (barcelona, brazil)… but..he’s old, injured and i’m not sure of his motivation, ‘cos he won it all… i think signing him is too big of a risk…even for “free”… remebner…this guy plays in spain…in league where defenders are on the pitch only because…am…why are they?! 🙂 they don’t do much work…if any 🙂 english style of play is too much for him…especially ‘cos here are matches every 3 days…

Leighton Baines seemed like a good bet early on but the longer that that rumour carried out it seems less and less likely that we’ll see him calling SJP home. Edmilson should be in the bag; so long as Junior Shep doesn’t bungle the task… Beye or Nickey Shorey would be quality signings, though I think Sam will hold off on those until he sees what he can garner with the Barca duo…

Nightfall – I hear what you are saying about defenders coming in from Spain, the game is totally different there, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Sam might be bringing Edmilson in to be a creative defensive midfielder. Look at what he did with Campo at Bolton.

Cicero – totally agree about Roeder. He was not a strong enough character to be the manager, but by all accounts he was a good coach and worked well with the younger players at the academy, I think because he got respect from them automatically where as the first team dressing room and the chairman’s office… I just don’t think he had the bottle to stand up for what he wanted/needed. With big Sam you see the difference already – walks into the job and says “We do it my way – that’s why you hired me and if not – I’m off”, then lays down the law to the players in a clam and sensible manner – unlike the Graeme Sourness scream at them and they’ll respect you method.

Toppsy Krett… Well here is something from one of those “Give Roeder a cahnce” people. I will maintain that as fans we should stand by our team and manager for as long as its needed. There are unfortunatly fans who demand instant success and who cant be realistic about the whole club. Big Sam has already voiced his concern towards that kind of ppl, and i for one dont hope we will hear anymore from all those “Fire the manager if he dosnt instantly deliver our dreams” fans, since those kind of ppl can ruin the atmosphere around a club if there are too many… Like with Roeder, i Believe that Sam should be given a fair amount of time to get the team to work right and i will stand by him to if things dont go our way from the go!.

Couple more options for left back.

(LB) Urby Emanuelson – Roeder had a look at him at Christmas but Ajax refused to be budged. Maybe 6 months on a firm bid from Allardyce could prove tempting?
(LB) Christian Pander – Currently at Schalke. Left footed free kick specialist.

andy t…there’s like 20 better DM on the market…who will do anything to prove themself… i still think edmilson is too big of a risk…he should be our last resort…
if he would be few years younger he would be a good signing, but now…injured and at age 30…before he adapts, he’ll be 33… for 80 k a week you can open a football school in africa…that’s an investment for the future…not this…

Magpie Rich – I don’t think Barton is attack-minded enough to have him as our attacking mid and Dyer just isn’t reliable enough. I think that this is a very important weak area for us and is the reason we aren’t scoring enough goals. We should bring in a world-class player like Diego at Werder Bremen or van der Vaart at HSV. That should solve our creativity problems in the centre.

I think we’ve got a type of player like Van der Vaart and Diego in our squad; the name is Emre Belozoglu. He’s a fantastic player and I think if he can play closer to our strikers then he would do amazing things. Roeder played him to often at the left side of the center of the midfield alongside Parker.
Defensively, it would be fantastic if BS could succeed in bringing in Edmilson and Beye. Edmilson is a world-class player, which he prooved at Lyon and in the Brazilian team; big question: how will he return after his injury?
Beye is just what we need to lead our defence; he has got the capability to play at right or at center in the defence.
After those I think we should all hope that we don’t need to buy new strikers at the end of the transfer market if it is never sure till the 31st August that Owen and Oba are Newcastle players next season. Just hope for it!

Indeed indeed the future is looking very promising and I like the fact Sam has come out and said it’ll take a few years to get where we want to be, because no matter how much we’d like to think otherwise, he’s totally spot on. Statements and interviews like hes giving and been giving just install more confidence in myself, and more importantly the players as they know they are heading forward. Hopefully we can finish:
    2007-2008 – top 7/8
    2008-2009 – top 6
    2009-2010 – top 6
    2010-2011 – top 4
    2011-2012 – Premiership Champions

Watson – i think we can do better than that – by one year – especially if we use Ashley’s money at the right time to bring in world class players. We should be able to get into top 6 next season with luck – yes it’s a bit of a stretch i agree – but then next summer will be exciting in transfer market – because look to Sam to know exactly who he’s going after as soon as the transfer window opens – unlike in the past. That’s what some of his staff are for – recruitment – and they really seem to do their job well – every year. It certainly feels like a new beginning for the club 😀

Watson – I’d put the year I expect us to win the title forward by about two years. We could be challenging by the time you put down but I think we will need experience of fighting for the title before we actually are actually mature enough to win it.

Obafan – I’m not a big believer in Emre. I thought he was an amazing signing for us a few years ago but if he is as good as you say he is, surely he would have played better before now. For the last two years his performances have been barely acceptable and world-class players can play well in weak teams. I think Emre needs a fresh start in another league.

Ebol – I think everyone gets a fresh start under Sam Alardyce. The methods he is bringing to the squad and the teamwork he inspires I think that it is well worth looking at players like Emre, Luque, Duff possibly even Babayaro given Sams recent comments between now and the January window, because we all know that they have potential and if they deliver their best on a consistent basis are quality enough to in or pushing for a first team spot . I certainly think that the first three are definitely “confidence” players and need a manager who can get them in the right frame of mind to produce their best. I’d also say that St James hasn’t been the right place or had the right management to do that for at least 2 years. Babayaro – like Dyer I think will improve through competition. They both have the sort of temperament that gets fired up by being told they’re not as good as someone else (aka arrogant).

Magpie 07 – what makes you think our squad is tiny. There are currently 29 first team players after all of the confirmed arrivals and departures (7 out 4 in) so that puts our squad last season at 32
    Arsenal was 30
    Man Utds was 29
    Chelsea was 23
    Liverpool was 29
    Spurs was 30
    Bolton was 24

Now admittedly in that 32 are Huntingdon, LuaLua, Foster and Triosi who really I would put as reserves even though they were given first team squad numbers. But that still gives a squad size of 28 which would make it about average size for a top 6 side. It felt tiny last season because 33% of the squad were out injured simultaneously and about 50% out at some point over the season but actually most other teams having the same kind of injury crisis we have had would have seen themselves drop from mid-table to relegation – we dropped from top 6 to relegation. One of the reasons I am so delighted about Alardyce coming in is that Newcastle has been hit like this for a long time – Bobby Robson first started looking into the injury level issue and moved the training site in an attempt to alleviate it. I don’t think Souness even considered it and Roeder knew about it but thought the way to deal with it was to grit your teeth and struggle through. Big Sam has walked though the door and got back to where Bobby Robbson was in terms of the preparation of the squad needs to be right, he just is more up to date than Robson was about how to achieve it.

Hmm..I really think,as i see now..if BS is going to bring players like Rozehnal in we can compete with Pool and Arsenal for the 4 place or the third.Tottenham and Aston Villa is looking good to.And they keep bringing in players. We should get Beye,Nelson from Benfica looked very interesting.Woodgate would be a very good signing.Edmilson is old..but not older than Makelele who played almost all games for Chelsea and have a important job in the chelsea squad. He is 34 if he can do it Edmilson should be capable.I think he would be a great signing. And in the creative..field we have Emre,no need for Vaart or Diego.BUT we dont have a player who can take emres place if he should get injured…a young player in that positiion would be great. And strikers..plz BIG S sell Shola get a new Youngster in.I saw USA against Poland U-20 world cup.I WANT ADU!
