Sam Allardyce again talked to Lee Ryder of the Evening Chronicle today about what has transpired so far on the transfer front and seems happy with what he has achieved so far in bringing new faces to Newcastle.
We think what Sam says (plus what Chris Mort says) is probably the closest we’ll get to what’s really happening at the club – so we’ll review what Sam has said this morning – and forge some conclusions on what’s happening.
Sam told Lee Ryder today:
“I still think that when you are targeting players like Mark Viduka, Joey Barton and David Rozehnal you have to stave off a lot more competition than we did with the sort of players I was bringing in at Bolton.“That makes it hugely difficult. “You have got to do a lot of selling of yourself and the football club in terms of what you’re trying to achieve.
“I think we’ve done that extremely well given the sort of competition we were up against for all three players.â€
The two that we seem to have missed out on were Steve Sidwell and Tal Ben Haim – who would have been terrific fee transfers for us – but we were pipped by Chelsea – who let’s face it have done quite well these last few seasons 😀
Sam went on about the two players we missed out on:
“The one particular disappointment was we couldn’t stave off Chelsea with Tal Ben Haim – that’s the size of the competition we’ve come across. “We couldn’t quite persuade Steve Sidwell to sign either, and he went to Chelsea.“We’ve had some disappointments, but I think the three signings we’ve made in a short space of time have been massive moves forward for the football club.â€
Well we think Sam’s done very well so far and we hope there are more players to come in.
We think we have almost tied up the deal for Barcelona’s Edmilson – who will join us on January 1st when he’ll be 100% fit. That’s an excellent deal by Sam – because as we’ve said it will give us some flexibility on his injury should it not heal well. It also means we will not start paying for him until he can play for the team and it also means that Sam can negotiate an even better fee because Edmilson will be joining us a short 6 months before his contract runs out at Barcelona. To us that’s brilliant negotiating by Newcastle.
In his report today Lee points out that Fulham left back Franck Queudrue – who we featured today in one of our Newcastle Transfer Update articles – believes the deal is still fairly premature, as other targets on Sam’s shortlist are higher priority.
From a defensive viewpoint we hope those deals involve Habib Beye (₤2M), Brede Hangeland (₤2M), Nicky Shorey (₤5M) and even Wayne Bridge (₤5M) – whose name is resurfacing as a potential Newcastle target. These types of players would vastly improve Newcastle’s defense for next season – with enough backup players in place to ensure injury doesn’t ravage the team (as it did the last two years) while also creating good competition for places.
Roll on August 11th.
As usual we appreciate your comments.
