There is news today that Newcastle may be interested in French defender Rod Fanni – so we’ll run a transfer update on what we understand the transfer situation to be.
Rod Fanni was born December 6, 1981 in Martigues and the 25 year-old currently plays in the French League for Nice.
He is a defender and a couple of weeks ago was linked with a potential move to Glasgow Celtic for £3.5M.
Celtic were said to be battling it out with Monaco for the signature of Nice’s £3.5M rated defender in mid-May. Fanni would prefer to join a club involved in Champions League, which puts Celtic in a fairly strong position – but of course the English Premier League is far superior to the Scottish Premiership and several clubs in England could offer Fanni both a more competitive and higher level of football.
Fanni can play right back or central defense, stands 6’1″ tall and is said to be Lilian Thuram’s heir apparent in the French squad. If that’s true that’s high praise indeed. Fanni’s agent Dominique Six told the News of the World last June 24th:
“We have had interest in Rod from Monaco, Celtic, Genoa and St Etienne.“Celtic have looked at him many times.
He knows about that and would have no problems about going to Celtic.”
Fanni began his career in 2000 with hometown club Martigues for whom he played 63 times scoring 1 goal before moving to RC Lens in 2002. During his two years at the club Fanni played 33 times and then in 2004 he moved to LB Chateauroux for whom he played 33 times scoring 1 goal. In 2005 he joined Nice and has played for them a total of 57 times. In all Fanni has played 186 first class games scoring 2 goals.
Fanni’s agent Dominique Six went on:
“I got calls a few times last season from the Nice sporting director, Roger Ricort, saying that Celtic had been at a Nice match to see Rod play,” “It is a very big club that is always competing at the top level in Europe.“I was the agent when Momo Sylla joined Celtic, so I know it is a good club to deal with.
I understand why there is interest in Rod. It’s expected he will be in the French national team in the coming season.
“It is certain he will leave Nice this summer. I met the club president, Maurice Cohen, on Friday and we agreed this.
The only thing that will have to be decided is the price, since Rod is under contract until 2010.”
Last Wednesday Rod Fanni claimed Newcastle, Everton and West Ham were interested in bringing him to England. Fanni is keen to move on from Nice, having helped guide the club to Ligue 1 safety last term, and is ready to try his luck in England. We don’t know exactly if that means he is no longer interested in joining Celtic but we think so.
The 25-year-old says his agent has yet to confirm a firm offer, but is hopeful of finding a new club this summer. Fanni told setanta.com last Wednesday July 4:
“A host of clubs are interested in me,”. “They have approached my agent but haven’t made any offer for the moment.
Three English clubs contacted my representative.
I can tell you their names: Newcastle, Everton and West Ham. “There is nothing concrete, for the moment.”
Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce wants to continue to strengthen his defense for next season and has already brought in David Rozehnal from Paris Saint Germain. Everton have yet to do anything in the transfer market, while West Ham may step up a gear following confirmation they will not be relegated over the Carlos Tevez affair.
Only Everton can offer Fanni European football next year but both Newcastle and West Ham could probably offer Fanni better terms than the Liverpool based club. Monaco have already had a bid of £2M rejected for the player, according to various reports.
Rod looks like he could be a good player and seems a utility defender being able to play at full back or center back – exactly the type of player Sam needs.
