Mystery Defender in Sam Allardyce’s Sights

The Journal is reporting today that Sam Allardyce left Newcastle’s training camp in Stegersbach, Austria suddenly on Sunday to meet personally with a defensive target and try to persuade the player to join Newcastle United.

In his report Luke Edwards does not mention who the player is – or which country he currently plays in – but Sam is hoping to sign the defender this week.

Sam Allardyce

Allardyce has been reported to be working feverishly during the training camp to bring a bunch of new players to Newcastle and has been on his cell phone most of the time – while still preparing and conducting the training sessions with the Newcastle players.

We know Sam gets paid around ₤3M/year bit it’s still nice to see a guy like Sam driven by his ambition (and that of Newcastle) and he seems to have simply worked his socks off for the Newcastle cause since he arrived. Sam of course has already lured Joey Barton, Geremi, David Rozehnal and Mark Viduka to St James’ Park for a net figure of only ₤1.5M, but he knows – as do the fans – that more defensive reinforcements are necessary. Sam is said to have met with the player personally yesterday to conduct the negotiations and he hopes to sign the player within days.

Newcastle’s new manager, has continued his efforts in the transfer market while he has conducted the training camp and held one-on-one talks with most of the players. The potential new signing, thought to be a central defender, is expected to be confirmed as a United player in the next 48 hours following Allardyce’s personal efforts to meet with him and persuade him to join the club.

We have no idea who this player is – but the following defenders have been targeted by Sam in the past – Habib Beye of Marseilles, Brede Hangeland of FC Copenhagen, Rod Fanni of Nice and Edmilson of Barcelona who we think will join in January. It could also be none of these – but the target is rumored to be a central defender and high profile.

Comments welcome – who do you think it is?

    High profile central defender?

Cannavaro – He hasn’t settled in Spain.

    (If only)

Doesn’t fit the “big guy at the back” scenario, though would still love to see him pull on a toon shirt.

I just feel as thought it is more likely to be a UK based player

    Its Habib Beye.
Not very “high-profile”, but a solid player indeed

If he met the mystery player in or near Austria Id like to think it was Italy as there are some top defenders there – Andrea Barzagli (world cup winner) of Palermo would be a fantastic signing.
Looking at other countrys round the area Marek Jankulovski a decent Czech left back, he’s at Milan, Per Mertesacker of Werder Bremen, a very big center back or even maybe Vedran Ćorluka of Croatian title holders Dinamo Zagreb who is also very tall and even plays up front if the team are losing bagging a few goals.

None of these players have been linked with us, which is how Sam likes it, he can then nip in and grab their signature before other teams are alerted to a bidding war. Mertesacker and Corluka could well be tempted to the Premiership, however we would face massive competition for Barzagli. As for Jankulovski, well that would depend on who Milan bring in as to wether he would be available.

Any one of those would be a World Class signings.

Different sites claims Sam went to Marseille to tie up the deal for Beye.
They just might be guessing though…

Maybe this superstar from spain might be a defender and not deco.

puyol anyone? nah, he would never leave barca. I dont think i’d want any madrid defenders (apart from ramos i think) it might be ayala or someone like that.

Beye would be a nice signing, but I hope for my own sake that it’s Hangeland, then they will show more Newcastle-games on Norwegian pubs where I’m gonna spend my next 6 months. Anyway , Big Sam has already done a better job than the most of the earlier managers! HOORAY THE LADS!!

Rob Kirton – Cannavaro – he would be fantastic – last year he was voted best player at the world cup – he’s only 5’10” (actually listed at 5′ 9.5″) but still a wonderful player – one of my favorites – that would put us on the map.

cannavaro would be a class signing but sam did go to marseille to tie up the deal for habib beye also i think oba will be a arsenel player next season but as someone said swap gallas with oba plus money and gabriel hienze would be a good signing but also as someone said if he goes to liverpool that than might leave john arne risse free to pick up on the cheap he would be a great signing

Very good chance with Corluka, he plays for Zagreb in the Croatian league, he is only 21 and is nearly 6’3″. Im very confident Allardyce could convince him to come to Newcastle. He is very experienced for his age too and hopefully would see Newcastle as a good option.
    Who knows.

I think Beye will be at NUFC very soon. But I think the mistery defender is not Beye…

It isn’t Cannavaro, be realistic why would he come to NUFC??? I’m a big NUFC fan, but what can we offer him to choose us above Madrid (or another great European team). For us it’s a new start which we all see in the way our team is getting build.
Perhaps it is a defender that was never mentionned as a BS target for the toon. We’ll see who it is (hopefully). Let’s hope that when the deal is done, that we all are surpirsed by the tranfer policy of BS.

Alex gone to Chelsea, was already a Chelsea player but ‘lent out’ to Ajax or something along those lines. Think Chelsea paid the fee but couldnt get a work permit for him so he went to Ajax till he obtained one.

I hadnt heard of Beye before we were supposedly interested but reading up on him he sounds a good option, however I dont think he would be the ‘major’ signing either. Looks like he will be here for weekend.

Obafan – Lee Ryder of the Chronicle says Sam is after Habib Beye today …here’s a piece i put up on it.

But I still hope Sam’s pursuing another defender in addition to Beye – a LB must be high on their agenda.
