Sam Still After Defender Habib Beye

Sam Allardyce has already made his move to sign Marseilles defender Habib Beye, the 29 year-old Senegalese who can play full back or center back.

We should know within the next day or two whether Sam will be successful in completing his 5th signing for the club.

However, the news we are hearing today may not be particularly good.

Habib Beye

The Newcastle manager flew to France on Sunday for talks with the Senegal right back and hopes to lure him to St James’ Park in a £2M move. Sam has met with Habib for one-on-one talks but reports this morning suggest Sam has made his final offer for the defender. We assume that we are meeting the price asked by Marseilles (£2M) so we can only assume that a sticking point maybe the terms being offered to Beye.

We can’t read too much into this right now – but really do hope that Sam can work his magic to persuade the 6’0” defender to join him on Tyneside. Allardyce refused to stop his attempts to reshape the United squad he inherited from Glenn Roeder – during the Austrian training camp and has worked tirelessly to secure deals for a number of players. Sam has been in constant touch with new Deputy Chairman Chris Mort who said yesterday there was plenty of money available for new signings – especially defenders.

Don’t be surprised however, if this trip is also a cover for other transfer targets Sam may be pursuing. He is still after Edmilson and Gudjohnsen from Barcelona and both players would strengthen his squad in terms of both experience and skill – which is what Sam is now looking for.

Most Newcastle fans expect some signing before the end of the week – and preferably good defenders. We’ll just have to wait and see on that one – but most fans seem to have complete faith in Sam Allardyce already – and that’s a good sign.

Comments very welcome.

If he doesnt want to come to SJP then tough . I only want players who really want to come and die for the cause not just for the wage packet . Too many think they are entitled but dont deliver . The Milch cow has to stop . Then we will see the team take the premiership by storm . Fit , talented and hungry players

He’s been quoted today saying he wants to stay in France. If this is true, then move onto our next target, we don’t want players who haven’t got the desire to play in a black and white shirt. Moreover, we shoud really be pursuing at least two new left backs. Baba dosen’t deserve another chance, he couldn’t care about the club, ditto Stephen Carr.

Arthur – i agree – if he doesn’t want to come he shouldn’t. Still think we’ll sign someone by end of week – even if it’s not Beye.

i think beye has said this because he is marseille captain, if a move to the toon falls through he doesn’t want to be hated by the fans. i think the deal is all but done, newcastle and marseille are just sorting the tranfer fee. they would rather him go now than leave for free next season.

I think the important part of Beye’s interview was not the part where he says he wants to stay at Marseille but the part where he says ‘unless I am told to leave’. Now this looks like another Barton type of situation and I am betting Beye has some sort of loyalty clause in place and is making sure when he leaves he is seen as having not actually asked to leave.

BEYE may have said this before meeting BSA, the media tend to print quotes that were said days, sometimes weeks before. I think Sam’s close to getting his man and that the media are reporting something that was said before the beginning of the week.

I agree with LiamBirchy8 too that it may have been said to appease he current fans if the deal fall through….

Oh no I can’t believe what I just read. For me Beye would be my favourite signing and now I see this. Hope Welshwizard has got it right that he said it before he met BS or that he said it to satisfy the OM fans, that he actually loves to play for them.

I hope I see him in a black & white shirt next month….

Hey guys, people seem to forget Boumsong, Domi, Goma, Distin and that guy
Frank somebody who looked a bit like that Worall Thompson off the telly,
I wouldn’t be too bothered about not landing a “top” defender from the French league, most (with the exception of Charles Z) have been nothing but trouble for the toon………

Hammy… his name was Dumas ;)…
The cool thing is, that whoever we sign, i have trust in Sam to get a really good player for a fair price, so if its not Beye then its Young, if its not Heinze then its Shorey or someone else who’s quality will be better than what we have seen for years no doubt.
