Sam Allardyce has already made his move to sign Marseilles defender Habib Beye, the 29 year-old Senegalese who can play full back or center back.
We should know within the next day or two whether Sam will be successful in completing his 5th signing for the club.
However, the news we are hearing today may not be particularly good.
The Newcastle manager flew to France on Sunday for talks with the Senegal right back and hopes to lure him to St James’ Park in a £2M move. Sam has met with Habib for one-on-one talks but reports this morning suggest Sam has made his final offer for the defender. We assume that we are meeting the price asked by Marseilles (£2M) so we can only assume that a sticking point maybe the terms being offered to Beye.
We can’t read too much into this right now – but really do hope that Sam can work his magic to persuade the 6’0†defender to join him on Tyneside. Allardyce refused to stop his attempts to reshape the United squad he inherited from Glenn Roeder – during the Austrian training camp and has worked tirelessly to secure deals for a number of players. Sam has been in constant touch with new Deputy Chairman Chris Mort who said yesterday there was plenty of money available for new signings – especially defenders.
Don’t be surprised however, if this trip is also a cover for other transfer targets Sam may be pursuing. He is still after Edmilson and Gudjohnsen from Barcelona and both players would strengthen his squad in terms of both experience and skill – which is what Sam is now looking for.
Most Newcastle fans expect some signing before the end of the week – and preferably good defenders. We’ll just have to wait and see on that one – but most fans seem to have complete faith in Sam Allardyce already – and that’s a good sign.
Comments very welcome.
