Frenchman Rod Fanni Likely to Join Newcastle

Rod Fanni’s agent Dominique Six – who is also Franck Queudrue’s agent – says that Rod has a very good chance of playing for Newcastle next season.

The 25-year-old has been touted around Europe after his club Nice agreed to sell him this summer, and we reported only last week that Newcastle are keen on the £3.5M-rated Frenchman.

Rod Fanni

Fanni is a very versatile defender (much like Tal Ben Haim who is now impressing Jose Mourinho at Chelsea) – and Rod while usually preferring right back can also play at center-back, left-back, right midfield and central midfield. So he would be a perfect acquisition for Sam – principally for the defense.

Dominique Six talked to Sky Sports today and said:

“All the managers in France love this player,”

“He is very content in France and has three offers, but he really wants to play in England.”

“Fanni is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in France and is the quickest,”

Six then compared Fanni with Sagna – who has recently moved to Arsenal for around £6M and also commented on the interest shown so far by Newcastle. Six went on:

“If Sagna moves to England for some 9million euros (£6million), then Fanni for me would be a wonderful bargain.”

“Allardyce knows about him, I am due in England next week and we will be looking to meet with Newcastle.”

As we reported last week Rod is described as Lilian Thuram’s heir apparent and is widely expected to earn his first cap for France next season. Fanni’s arrival would give manager Sam Allardyce lots of options in defense and even in midfield.

If Fanni is signed the back four could be Fanni, Taylor, Rozehnal and Geremi. That’s a very strong back four with even more defenders expected to be signed – with Franck Queudrue one of them – and he can battle it out with Geremi for left back. Only Steven Taylor will likely keep his place in the back four next season.

Here’s some playing information on Rod Fanni we first published about a week ago.

Fanni began his career in 2000 with hometown club Martigues for whom he played 63 times scoring 1 goal before moving to RC Lens in 2002. During his two years at the club Fanni played 33 times and then in 2004 he moved to LB Chateauroux for whom he played 33 times scoring 1 goal. In 2005 he joined Nice and has played for them a total of 57 times. In all Fanni has played 186 first class games scoring 2 goals.

We also want to warn people that with Butt also in the side there may (no will) be many jokes about Fanni and Butt – but of course we’re too polite to even mention them on this site . 😀

Comments very welcome – but please keep it clean.

Good call re the comments – remember ‘Fanni’ sounds like something entirely different in the UK compared to your use of the word in the US! 🙂

the commentary will be horrible- imagine andy gray saying…

“Well Fanni seems to be staying back so Nobby can push up”

“Catastrophy, Fanni and Butt have got in a right mix up and ended up taking out Nobby”

    “Fanni looks behind for Butt”

“The ball is slipped through inbetween Butt and Fanni, he sees them sort of gaps very well”

….But apart from that he seems to be a good player 😀

Maybe a touch presumptious to say well have a very strong back four with ros, taylor, fanni and geremi as two of them have no prem experience. That said it ll be a lot better than last season! Can geremi play all across the back four? Keep up the good work ed, i enjoy your articles.

Dan – Geremi cannot play center back – but can play either full back position.

it would be nice to have a defender compared to thuram. As opposed to Bramble and Boumsong who could only be compared to partially sighted, amputee clowns, with a chronic fear of the ball due to post traumatic stress disorder due to the disasters at the gallowgate end.
No offence intended to any disabled circus folk. In fact if you do choose that course in life it is to be applauded. You wouldn’t be my first choice as the centre halves though.

Is anyone else just wishing we would sign an out and out left back? I’m all for versatile squad players, but we need a starting left-back. At this rate we’re going to start the season with baba-joke-o in the 1st 11.

AB – yes and we’re pretty certain Sam will buy a left back. Not sure who that would be but Shorey and Baines from England are probably most mentioned. He told Chris Mort recently that he still wanted two left backs and a center back for the defense. Looks like he’s also looking for one more holding midfielder.

That’s probably the four additional players he talked to Newcastle World about last Thursday – to go with the four he already has brought in. He said he expected 8 additional players in the squad by end of August.

If Fanni is half as good as Thuram he’ll be a great signing, especially at the price mentioned. It’s a bit of a worry that if he really is that good , why has he not made his french debut yet? At least he’s got pace apparently, which we’re still lacking at the back. Hopefully he’s strong and decent in the air as well!

Sounds like a good signing if we get him — he’ll need to be with that name! Anyone remember a young dutch lad we signed a few years back called Brian Pinas. Unfortunately he never got a game so we didn’t get the chance to chant ‘PINAS…PINAS…PINAS’, which was a shame. Maybe we can make-up for that if we do sign ‘Hot Rod’ Fanni?

It’s Dyer squeezing a ball into Butt after some good pressing by Fanni and Nobby worked it loose.
