Are Newcastle Really Interested in Fabio Cannavaro?

Chelsea and Newcastle are reported to be in a battle for the signature of Fabio Cannavaro – after the Italian star center back was told he was surplus to requirements at Real Madrid.

New Real Madrid manager Bernd Schuster has brought in defenders Pepe from Porto for £19M and Christoph Metzelder on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund and Fabio has been told he can leave.

Fabio Cannavaro

The 33-year-old (he’s 34 in September) has been linked with a move back to former club Juventus but new boss Claudio Ranieri has refuted those suggestions. However, it’s unusual for top Italian stars to leave their own country as witnessed by last year’s Italian world cup squad – where every single player played in the Italian league.

Newcastle have reportedly approached Cannavaro (we have no idea if this is true) but Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is apparently keen on the Italian and of course can offer him Champions League football – if Fabio can make it into the Chelsea side.

Cannavaro of course joined Real Madrid last summer for £13.5M after Juventus were demoted – following the match-fixing scandal in Italy – and after his fantastic play for eventual champions Italy in the 2006 world cup. He is the reigning European Footballer of the Year and FIFA World Player of the Year.

He played 31 times for Real last season and 74 times for Juventus from 2004-2006 scoring 6 goals. Before that he played 51 times for Inter-Milan during his two year stay and scored 3 goals. From 1995-2002 Fabio played 212 times for Parma with 5 goals – and from 1992-1995 he played 68 times for Napoli scoring 2 goals. In total Cannavaro has played 435 first class games and scored 15 goals. He is captain of Italy and has appeared 108 times for the national side scoring 1 goal.

Cannavaro apparently failed to have the impact expected at Real last season. We would expect Cannavaro to return to Italy – although we’re not sure if there is any real interest from Newcastle or Chelsea for the Italian.

Fabio certainly fits the type of player Sam Allardyce has persuaded to play for him in the past. Newcastle already have Taylor and Rozehnal for center back – with Brazilian Edmilson probably on his way in January. We also have Peter Ramage coming through and 19 year old youngsters Huntington and Edgar in the center-back position. So for the long term it may be that Sam cannot use Cannavaro effectively – even if he wanted to come to Newcastle. But don’t be surprised if Sam still goes after Fabio – who is still world class after all.

That’s our view on this story – what do you think? – your comments always appreciated.

Ed we definetly need another centre half at the beginning of the season and not in January and he would be perfect for a year and I think if he was to come to England he would join us but I would agree with you that he will probably go back to Italy.

Howie – i just don’t think he will join us – but maybe Sam thinks differently – it would nevertheless be a hard sell for us. Also not sure what the situation is with Edmislon – if he comes we think it’ll be in January – but no word for a couple of weeks on him and Gudjohnsen.

I have to agree with Howie, and i cant get it into my head how u could possible name Ramage, that guy is championship material at best. So counting out Ramage and Edmilson since he is only available after january, we only have 2 good centrebacks in Rozehnal and Taylor, so we need ATLEAST 1 more… Also, u guys have been raving about Hyypia the walking disaster for weeks now because of his experience. Who better to pass on experience to young Taylor than a world cup winning captain who has been in most of europes top clubs?

Tayls and Rozenhal are really the only two decent centre backs at the club, Ramage proved last year he is a sqaud player at best. We need at least one more centreback, probably two. Huntungdon and Edgar should not be relied upon (ditto Ramage as well) – look where this got Roeder. If we have the money (not much spent so far – net £1.5m?, so there should be PLENTY more) get enough decent players in the positions we need them. IMO we still need a left back, a centre back and a right back. If the papers are right this morning and N’Zogbia is interested in asking for a move away (hope not) then we need a high-calibre replacement – Duff is crocked til November? Still quite worrying, we need to sign some heads this week, I hope we don’t wait until the last week of the window and then panic-buy!

if we can sign him then what a marvellous signing he wud be and this will show our intent for the season. he is class like, wot we need at our club. then all we wud need is one for top centre half and a left back and we will be sorted. what does everyone think about this ronaldinho business. 58million, we will never sign him like will we?? ad love it if we did though.

Are you serious? There’s no spot for Cannavaro beacause we have…Ramage?! Cannavaro is a defender of the highest quality and we have the chance to snap him up for a freebie. I would take him in a heart-beat. Don’t believe it’ll actually happen, but it’s always good to dream

Cannavaro is a fantastic player but he will never come to Newcastle. He’ll be 34 in Sept. He has 2-3 yrs maximum to play. I think he’ll be interested in going to a team who will help him lift some silverware in his final yrs. We are in the process of rebuilding and he’ll be thinking our chances of winning some silverware is slim, which almost all fans do not think.

    Hi!!

First of all I want to thank for a great page with very good articles. They are always verey interesting to read! But today I got pissed of when you said you maybe didnt wanted to have Cannavaro. You said : we dont know if Cannavaro would fit in Newcastle with Taylor and Rozwenhal, and Ramage for center backs. Taylor is allright and I know from before Rozenhal is a class defender, but two is not enough… Ramage is total crap! The worst I have ever seen. How can Cannavaro not fit in Newcastle. I know is getting old but he still got at least 2-3 years to go.
This is the only time I have dissegred with, but keep going!!!
    Great site!!!

At 34 he wouldn’t be a long term option for anyone! He’d be a bloody good player to have for a season 2 though. I’d say get him.

still selling season tickets ,so all the big names are being bandied about, however with regards to ramage, he may not be the best leftback or rightback (mainly where he was being played ,but as a center half he doesent make as many fouls or hanballs as young taylor and gives 100% every game (even when carrying an injury like he was last season) admittedly he is not as good at reading the game as tayls but will make a valuable squad member .
I can see sam trying to pursuade cannavaro to come , if only to nurture the young talent in tayls edgar huntington etc, but doubt if thats the type of role he would be looking for !

i wud like to think we cud attract him to come to us. lets face it, if he goes to chelski, he wont be 1st choice. they have got, terry, carvallio, ben haim all there already, so he wont be guarenteed 1st team football there. it all depends who else we can bring in, we wont win the premiership this next 2 years, but if we can bring in good players, get back into the top 4, win a cup, then we will be an attraction to good players again.

Graeme… I admire heart to, but it can only take you so far, and i still shiver when i think of some of his costly Bramble like blunders. I cant ever see us reaching top 4 if we have to rely on players of his quality for more than 5 games a season.

I think he would be a great signing, captained italy with over 100 caps, a perfect role model for Taylor, Ramage, Edgar and Huntington to aspire to and learn from. Even if it is for 1 or 2 seasons definitely worth it. Can’t believe Real paid £13.5m for him last year at 32. Probably have to pay a fee for him. With him CD would be sorted just need a right and left back.

    I think if he comes we have 2 problems solved;

    1. We have a (very) good defence then; if also Fannie joins us (and perhaps Quedrue; a good LB who is motivated and who really wants to play for the Toon, which is really important). He will play in the heart of our defence and Taylor and even Rozehnal will learn lots of position play, leadership, … from Cannavaro.

    2. If he comes to us; we have found our new captain. Experience, solid defencer, a leader on the pitch, so I would say; go for him as quickly as possible and hopefully the outcome of this transfer target does not become the same as Beye.

    Good luck Sam!!!
