Newcastle: Martins Staying and Edmilson Coming

Sam Allardyce spoke at length on Sky Sports News last night on a number of subjects related to Newcastle.

One of the topics was who was staying and going at Newcastle and from what Sam said last night it looks like Oba Martins is staying.

Also on the topic of who may be coming to Newcastle – Brazilian Edmilson is still a maybe – but only in January.

Oba Martins

Sam Allardyce told Sky Sports news:

“I have not spoken to Oba himself, only his representatives, who assure me there is nothing in it.

“But while the window is open and when somebody has a get-out clause like he does, there is always a chance you might lose him.

“You hope that is not going to be the case, but you have to just keep your fingers crossed and hope it does not happen.”

What seems a little strange with this comment is that Sam – the great communicator – has not spoken with Oba himself. We find that a little strange but don’t think it’s a problem. We expect Sam to be talking regularly with all his players. You don’t get the team spirit Sam engenders into his teams without good communications at all levels of the club.

Barcelona’s Edmilson

Sam also talked about his pursuit of Edmilson – the Brazilian center-back who is currently at Barcelona. Newcastle had been trying to set up a deal for Edmilson earlier in the summer, but Allardyce admits that bid is now on hold while the Barcelona center-back recovers from his right knee injury. The injury is estimated to be fully healed around the November time-frame.

“Edmilson is obviously not for now because the injury is a concern,”

“We may have to wait until January and it’s a great shame for a player of his ability and talent.

“But saying that I think we would’ve faced competition from the likes of AC Milan and Inter, although there still might be the opportunity to sign him.”

So there’s still a possibility on Edmilson but other clubs in Europe will also be after him come January. Since his Barcelona contract will be ending next June Sam may also be able to get the Brazilian at a reasonable price.

We have a suspicion that it’s a little more concrete than Sam says – and Edmilson will in fact be arriving at Newcastle in early January – but that’s just a hunch on our part.

Comments very welcome.

Someone asked why sam hasnt spoke to martins direct and moaned that sam should be doing more…………It all came about cos sam was meeting his agent for talks yesterday and this is the out come………..bloody hell it doesnt matter what sam does or the way he does things there is always someone not happy…..another person went on about sam being another roeder cos he wasnt getting defenders in for f*&^&*k sake….look at it another way fair enough not much has happened but at least he knows what needs put right unlike roeder, and the time its taking might be because he doesnt just want average players but actual quality players, thats why he has distanced himself from quadrue or whatever he’s called….chillout man he knows whats needed..

are we back in for baines? Everton are favourites for Wigan Athletic left-back Leighton Baines.
The Sun says the Latics rejected a £6m bid from Sunderland and Baines, 22, fancies a move to Everton ahead of Newcastle and Spurs.

I can’t see everton paying 6m, sunderland will give up, spurs have bale that is just greedy, which leaves us with 50m untouched. please sign him sam!

    New official numbers from

    Solano – 15
    Rozenhal – 4
    Barton – 7
    Luque – 19
    Viduka – 36
    Geremi -20

    They are the changes

Honestly, would love to see Taylor take the number 6 jersey. I think it’d suit his new importance and responsibility to the club. Bit of a trivial matter mind you.

i honestly don’t know what does anyone see in edmilson…he’s an average player in spain and he would suck in premier league…plus he’s injured, 30,… sam is talking about not signing italian players ‘cos they don’t have PL experiances…and then he goes after edmilson!?!?! i just don’t get it… defenders from serie A know their jobs!!!

I think Sam knows what he is doing. Lets judge the man mid way through the season. He is taking his time to get the right players for the right price. Fair play to the man! He could always go out and spend £9m on a goalkeeper like the panic buyer SMB’s are doing!
