A couple of the youth team defenders were only in as our defence is threadbare at the minute, Lough & Francis (and Bertram, Troisi & Lua Lua for that matter) are miles away from first team football.

With young players you have to aim to get one a season through to be a first team player, any club would be happy with that.

Because of injuries last year we had Huntingdon, Edgar, Ramage & Carroll appearing often, which wouldn't have been the case otherwise.

If one of them can push on this season then I will be happy (I'd say Huntingdon/Edgar has the better chance, Carroll should be loaned out if we keep hold of all our strikers).

Going back to last season, I thought Edgar looked really good, positional sense was fine and he was strong in the tackle, yet Roeder preferred Ramage etc. Anyone else think this was a mistake?

It just goes to show you that wee really need a couple of defenders in. I think Ramage and Huntington are both solid, with Huntington having more potential. I see Wayne Bridge is out with a hip problem. I would love to see a couple of world class defenders join the club.

Ross - i don't think it's a big bump - but Sam was obviously frustrated with his comments a day or two ago. It's a big big job Sam has. But as he says there are still some good defenders out there - but we need to move fast to get them - we need to be fully ready for the season - and not be signing players at 11pm on August 31st - as in previous years.

Pete - Darren Lough played for the youth team at right back last season - he's got to be decent to be given a full half by Sam last night. The youth team made the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup last year before going out to eventual champions Liverpool.

so he's challenging our young defenders to keep their place in the squad...
isnt this a little strange considering all big sam has been saying is that he'd like to bring in new defenders?
dont get me wrong i think huntington could turn out to be quite good. ramage on the other hand, is shite as far as im concerned.
im probably just jumping to conclusions, but to me this just looks like allardyce has hit a bump whilst trying to bring in new men at the back and this is the first attempt at covering it up until something finally manages to potentially happen regarding a new signing. thoughts guys?

Who the hell is Lough ?

Nice to see LuaLua and Troisi get a run out :D

Huntington is looking like a real good CB for the future (even though Roeder played him at LB), Ramage needs to take another big step forward in his development to become first team regular - although if we dont get the signings big Sam may be forced to play him.

So we've gone private again, maybe the cash will start flowing now. Out of our youngsters, I think (and hope) Carroll and Lua Lua are our biggest talents. Obviously we all know about Taylor, but these 2 boys could be our new generation Shearer and Beardsley, potentially.
