Newcastle Bid £7M for Defender - But Who Is It?

July 20th, 2007 · 103 Comments

Newcastle United have put in a bid of £7M for a top-class defender as Sam Allardyce continues to bring more defenders into the fold at Newcastle.

Newcastle will not disclose just who their target is but what we’re missing most of all is a left back followed by a center back – so the best bet would be it’s for a left back.

United have been desperate for an orthodox left-back for some time now – and have had various players play in the position – including right back Stephen Carr at the end of last season.

So who could the player be for £7M?

nicky-shorey.jpggabriel-heinze.jpgcurtisdaviespa_468×693.jpg

Nicky Shorey, Gabriele Heinze and Curtis Davies

Since Sam is big friends with Alex Ferguson there’s a possibility we have bid for Gabriele Heinze – but somehow we just don’t see Gabriele wanting to come to Newcastle – but we hope we’re wrong there. However, it certainly wouldn’t stop Sam bidding for Heinze in the hope he would get a chance to talk to the Argentinian and convince him to join the revolution at Newcastle.

Nicky Shorey would also be in the £7M range although that figure seems high for him - his value has generally been around the £5M mark. We don’t think it’s for Leighton Baines because we don’t think Leighton is tall enough for what Sam is looking for.

There is also Andrea Barzagli, center-back from Parma who was actually valued at round £11M – so £7M could be a good opening bid there. The other player who is worth that amount is Wayne Bridge of Chelsea - who is our personal choice for left back - but he’s injured right now - but probably worth the £7M to Newcastle.

Another player up for sale and in the £7M range is 22 year-old center-back Curtis Davies from West Bromwich Albion. We think WBA’s current valuation on Curtis is £8M and we know Newcastle have been keen on him in the past. In fact Nigel Pearson coached him when he was at WBA with Brian Robson last year.

If we had to stick our necks out – we’d go for Nicky Shorey – although that’s a high price - but he would be a great addition to our squad. We think Nicky just beats out Gabriele Heinze. The £7M valuation is probably closest to Heinze’s value in the transfer market - but hey - you never know with Sam - he could be after Gabriele - and he would be just great at Newcastle.

Hopefully the news on who it is will leak out shortly - but that never stopped us in the past from discussing these things.   :D
Let’s hear from you – who do you think it is?
Who do you think it should be?

All comments very welcome.

£7m has been touted as the fee for Drenthe!!!!!

  • 2 gordon // Jul 20, 2007 at 14:45

I think this is ‘Clearly wide of the mark’

  • 3 STEPHEN // Jul 20, 2007 at 14:46

hope it’s heinze, quality player. £7m sounds a bit expensive for shorey but if chopra cost £5m then £7 million for an england international isn’t that bad!!!

  • 4 Kash // Jul 20, 2007 at 14:47

I’d have Bridge, but he’s injured (again)! As for a CB, let’s go for Big Sol. Big Sol could also be captain and BSA would definitely get another 2 seasons out of him.

  • 5 Kash // Jul 20, 2007 at 14:49

Alan Oliver is an eternal Bull Shitter, he’s always raising my hopes which in turn are dashed by no action by club, making me resentful of the club. I blame Alan Oliver for all of Newcastle’s woes. He’s not reporting properly, they should report like the nazi propoganda team did for Hitler!!!!

  • 6 Stephen // Jul 20, 2007 at 14:50

Gabriele Heinze is probably the person and i expect him to come to us.There is alot of talk about him wanting to be in europe and that would rule us out but Big Sam is capable of anything example he brought Anelka to Bolton do i need to say anymore?

Dont think it be the right choice i prefer to buy a player younger he is 29 like even though he would be an excellent signing for 7 million would prefer a younger player like Nicky Shorey he is a very solid player dont make many mistakes and is a great passer not high profile butwould make us solid and thats what we need to be solid at the back.

  • 7 Bigted28 // Jul 20, 2007 at 14:50

Exactly ‘where’ has this infoleaked out from? Seems a bit ‘pie in the sky’ to me.

  • 8 Total Flanker // Jul 20, 2007 at 14:51

At 221, I’d say Davies is a little too old for us…:)

  • 9 bob // Jul 20, 2007 at 14:51

where did you get this story from ?? as i havnt heard anything about a 7 mill bit until this story. hope it is Shorey tho as i very much doubt heinze will want to join us, if it is shorey i dunno if reading will want to sell him but if it is a 7 mill bid 4 him is a very good offer to tempt them and if they accept im sure Shorey would want to join us.

  • 10 t-g-w // Jul 20, 2007 at 14:52

I’d like to think it was Barzagli, although left back and right back are greater priorities at the moment. Good to see something happening on the transfer front thought at last!

  • 11 Ed Harrison // Jul 20, 2007 at 14:52

The story is in this afternoon’s Evening Chronicle.

  • 12 Ed Harrison // Jul 20, 2007 at 14:53

Not sure it’s unreasonable that we would bid 7M for a defender - that’s where we need the quality - and presumably we have the cash.

  • 13 bob // Jul 20, 2007 at 14:53

evening chronicle says it all doesn’t well my hopes have jus been dashed

  • 14 Ed Harrison // Jul 20, 2007 at 14:57

Kash - that’s a lot of money for Drenthe - and he is unproven in the Premiership - not what Sam says he’s looking for.

  • 15 LiamBirchy8 // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:02

i think it could be barzagli but its probably baines/shorey or davies

  • 16 Shearer 4 pm // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:02

any body thought about lee naylor wb

  • 17 t-g-w // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:02

A bit off the topic, but if Dyer or Emre were to leave (more likely to be Emre and another report from the Chronicle so who knows how valid this is), who would people like to see come in to replace them? We would probably only need 1 midfielder if Dyer is staying - I would suggest Diego.

  • 18 Shearer 4 pm // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:04

also has everyone fogotton about anton ferdinand

  • 19 Bigted28 // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:05

I have just read that Heinze has a £7 million release clause in his contract. Wasting our time with that one though……

  • 20 Bev // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:05

I agree that Alan Oliver mostly talks alot of sh*t, but at least we have finally got some speculation about a signing after a really dull couple of weeks! but I must admit I dont want to get my hopes up either until I see it on BBC website or somethinig, heres hoping that yellow bar appears on Sky Sports News tonight saying we have had our bid accepted… but i wont hold my breath

  • 21 kel // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:11

we do need a little more flair nonetheless who comes in or not. we havent had dribblers for quite awhile now after ginola and probably gazza. some might argue about robert but he is a winger and probably dyer but he just runs with the ball with not much dribbling. a little touch of creativity and flair wouldnt harm us i think.

    u guys reckon?

  • 22 steve // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:11

i’d have to echo Kash’s opinion on anything that comes from alan oliver. plus, with freddie’s role within the club diminishing it’s hard to tell how much information that not-so-nice-journalist is privy to.

at the moment we have no idea how much cash the club is willing to spend. but i do hope we are planning to make an investment such as this in the defence. we desperately need it.

  • 23 kel // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:12

but of course defenders i think since big sam says he needs four more defenders. splash ashley’s cash and buy heinze davies and shorey provided they all wanna come. haha

  • 24 Kash // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:13

It could be Riise or maybe Chiellini. It could be bloody anyone!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 25 Kash // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:13

    Owens injured again!

  • 26 LiamBirchy8 // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:15

if emre leaves we should do a swap deal

emre to bayern - lahm exchange
emre to fenerbahce - appiah exchange

  • 27 Bev // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:15

damn you Owen, I’m going to the match tomorrow!!!

  • 28 Cockney Magpie // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:17

lol i think he is only going to miss that match tho, dont panic people!

  • 29 LiamBirchy8 // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:17

    source on this owen injury???????

  • 30 LiamBirchy8 // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:19

oh ive found it, ruled out of carlisle and celtic. but back for juve.

  • 31 Cockney Magpie // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:19

plus if we are all guessin who this defender could be then i would say either heinze or chillini they both round the 7 mill mark

  • 32 Cockney Magpie // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:21

wen is viduka bac? will he be back for celtic? if so that will be great to see how Oba and Viduka link up

  • 33 LiamBirchy8 // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:21

i think we are re-signing bramble or boumsong for 7m

  • 34 Cockney Magpie // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:25

lol or hopefully phillip albert, The Newcastle 5-0 Man utd match was on ESPN classic the ova day and i sky+ it and just keep watching it over and over again makes me feel soooo good and Alberts goal is probably the best goal in the premiership ever!!

  • 35 nightfall // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:25

what about bayern’s lucio… it would be a great buy… defenders and midfielders from bundesleague have discipline…
    emre + 5 mio for him…

  • 36 nightfall // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:25

i think that 7 mio is for heinze…

  • 37 Cockney Magpie // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:26

Especially love the bit when Cantona is getting a bit lairy and Rob Lee just dumps him on the floor!

  • 38 valle // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:55

I would guess Heinze, and why not?… Real and Barca are surely just speculation or he would have gone by now and Liverpool wont get near him. If it is Heinze then i would guess that Sam has some reason to be optimistic after his “testing the water” the other day.

  • 39 Keep Oba // Jul 20, 2007 at 15:58

I wish it was Barzagli…but thats not enough for him. Heinze I thought did not want to come here.

  • 40 TOON1 // Jul 20, 2007 at 16:03

Sorry about this ed,who does chillini play for.Has anyone thought it could be wes brown .What is everyones view on brown?Ive heard from friend that vincent company and chivu from roma are excellent defenders.WE NEED DEFENDERS !!!!

  • 41 Gunter Netzer // Jul 20, 2007 at 16:11

The£7m bid is for Philip Lahm of Bayern Munich……

  • 42 Ross // Jul 20, 2007 at 16:17

it could be heinze, after all it merely says we’ve made a bid for a defender, thats not to say it’ll be accepted.
yet its alan oliver, there’ll probably be a rumoured story within the next few days that super al is making a return to try his hand at right back.

  • 43 kev // Jul 20, 2007 at 16:30

i hope its royston drenthe but i don’t think it will be probly heinze, as thats around the mark been qouted for him in the past couple of days. drenthe is going to be a superstar i watched him for holland u21’s in the championships and he was awesome but a think he’s on his way to madrid or chelsea.

  • 44 Andreas // Jul 20, 2007 at 16:32

    @LiamBirchy8
emre to bayern - lahm exchange = not even close to a realistic swap. There’s 0% chance Lahm would leave Bayern for us. (would ofc love if we could get him but as said will simply not happen)
emre to fenerbahce - appiah exchange = might be a possible swap and a good one too.

  • 45 Ed Harrison // Jul 20, 2007 at 16:33

TOON1 - Fabricio Coloccini plays for Deportivo in Spain and has played around 25 times for Argentina. He’s 25 years old and 6′1″ and played in last years world cup for Argentina.

Heinze wants move to liverpool[bbc sport]

  • 47 tosty // Jul 20, 2007 at 16:34

ive just read that the bid was for barzagli and that we arewilling to pay p to 12 mil for him

deos anyone know what hes like???

  • 48 Ed Harrison // Jul 20, 2007 at 16:41

Cockney Magpie - it depends how well Australia do in the Asia Cup - they are in the quarter-final against Japan tomorrow - the final is 29th July…here’s the schedule - http://soccernet.espn.go.com/fixtures?league=AFC.CUP&cc=5901

But I think Sam is going to let Viduka have a mini-holiday after th Asia Cup - so he’ll mis the start of the season we think.

  • 49 Obafan // Jul 20, 2007 at 16:41

I think it’s for Gabriel Heinze. I hope we can add more quality to our squad, especially to our defence. Let’s just wait and see and I don’t want it to be a story like Beye; mystery defender and at the end nothing happens..

What’s the news about Emre??? He told he was going to stay, because this season will be his best he said. So he won’t go away. Dyer will have talks with BS and will also stay in our team.

  • 50 valle // Jul 20, 2007 at 16:43

I just sat and played with a possible formation from our current players with 3 additions of those we have been linked with:

    Owen Viduka
    Duff Dyer

    Barton Edmilson

    Heinze Geremi

    Rozehnal Barzagli

    Given

Pretty damn nice starting 11 if u ask me…

  • 51 valle // Jul 20, 2007 at 16:44

Damn, that was not how i entered the formation, but u get the picture =/

  • 52 Obafan // Jul 20, 2007 at 16:55

Valle - that would be a fantastic team. Hope you got a special touch of magic in which you can predict something ;-).

Duff is out untill October so let’s give Luque a chance in the beginning.
Edmilson will join us in January (I think) end will be firstl replaced by Emre.

  • 53 richupindisbiatch // Jul 20, 2007 at 17:05

u missed martins out lol where’s he in ur formation man ain’t he gd enough but yeh man pritty gd line up if we do get those players in defence we need n plus maybe another midfield player bring on the new season top 4 maybe fingers crossed peeps .

  • 54 Shearer 4 pm // Jul 20, 2007 at 17:09

because of the deals that took woodgate from us and owen to us we have a good relationship with real madrid, it is for this reason that i think that 7 mllion would help us get 3 of there bit part players who may become surplus to requirement under the nes coach i have heard that in the past both newcastle and bsa have been linked to ivan helguera, micheal salgardo and cicinho, all good defensive signing andwould all want to come to get regular football, all good quality proven players tel me what you think? just an idea bt would value your opinion also what about luisao and nelson remember them

  • 55 LiamBirchy8 // Jul 20, 2007 at 17:14

andreas, i know the lahm swap is unrealistic but they are interested.

from nufc.co.uk The Telegraph carry a story saying that Bayern Munich, Hertha Berlin and Fenerbahce are lining up a bid for turkish playmaker Emre.

So i thought of exchange deals.

    Lahm for Emre - Bayern

Appiah for Emre - Fenerbahce OR Appiah and Lugano for 5m and Emre

Kevin-Prince Boateng for Emre - Hertha Berlin

  • 56 James // Jul 20, 2007 at 17:20

i just hope the deal goes through quickly the team needs time to gel before the first prem match

  • 57 athol mcbride // Jul 20, 2007 at 17:27

aye its oliver at it again, him and fat fred messed alot of things up for players and supporters,
i hope its a solid defender sams after, not a hopefull wannabe, emre is going nowhere i know the lad, betcha oot ya want he will be here until toon want rid.

  • 58 valle // Jul 20, 2007 at 17:30

Obafan:… No magic touch im afraid, just media linked players ;). I will predict a fight for the 4th spot tho, i could see a repeat of Bobby’s 3rd season where we came out of the night like a dark horse. Im not saying i will be disapointed if it dosnt happen, i just got a damn good feeling about the new season.

  • 59 Tony_D // Jul 20, 2007 at 17:31

Looks like it is Lahm, I hope so :)

  • 60 valle // Jul 20, 2007 at 17:33

And btw, i agree about Luque… U dont get that bad overnight and i think Roeder’s man management lacked big time when he could let a spanish international worth 9mil just rot in the reserves… Perhaps it got personal in the end, i dunno

  • 61 valle // Jul 20, 2007 at 17:35

Tony D:… Where did u get that information mate?, i would love to see lahm arrive but i find nothing on Newsnow.

  • 62 TOON1 // Jul 20, 2007 at 17:54

Lahm would posssibly join ,dont think bayern made champ league .Was very impressed with him in last world cup.Scored germanys opening goal if im not mistaken.Very attack minded ,but can also defend .

  • 63 Kash // Jul 20, 2007 at 17:54

Lahm is right footed, and he’s not exactly the big strong defender BSA wants. As for us signing Helguera, well too late he’s signed for Valencia.
We can only wait and see who we have bid for!!!!!!!!!

  • 64 Kash // Jul 20, 2007 at 17:55

Lahm is right footed, and he’s not exactly the big strong defender BSA wants. As for us signing Helguera, well too late he’s signed for Valencia.
We can only wait and see who we have bid for, but it just could be that Alan Oliver is LYING once again!!!!!!!!!

  • 65 Phil // Jul 20, 2007 at 17:57

If they’re good enough they’re big enough! I’m not saying he is good enough, but you’re rehashing stories you read in the media about Baines not being tall enough which I’m sure Sam will be happy for people to believe. The best left back in the world, Roberto Carlos, is smaller than Leighton Baines but surely you’re not saying Big Sam wouldn’t sign him if he was available (and maybe 5 years younger). And as for Philip Lahm who would be my favourite if we can persuade him to give up UEFA Cup football, well he is the same height as Baines, will that put Big Sam off?

  • 66 valle // Jul 20, 2007 at 18:06

True, and if we get some height in positions like Def Mid (Edmilson) and the 2 Centre halves then we can do fine without height on the backs. The backs is more about being at the right place and pace than height anyway. How often do u see a back man marking an oponent and head the ball away anyway?… Only thing i could see as truth in this one is if Sam wants us to be a force from set pieces, in which case u cant get enough big and strong players.

  • 67 Kash // Jul 20, 2007 at 18:08

Big Sam stated in an interview after Hartlepool game that the defence is still prone to errors due to high balls. He want more commanding players across his back line to stop that problem. That to me says he wants defenders who are good in the air, which usually means big lads. Riise fits the bill in that sense, Drenthe I don’t think does while Lahm doesn’t really. Lahm is very versatile though, and BSA could be tempted by that. But Lahm is a right-footed left backwhich means our whole defence will be unbalanced!

  • 68 Phil // Jul 20, 2007 at 18:10

Yeah, just like it unbalanced Germany’s at the World Cup! I’ll take that risk!

  • 69 Kash // Jul 20, 2007 at 18:11

    Isn’t Mertasacker left footed?

  • 70 valle // Jul 20, 2007 at 18:12

Yah, but he is a Centre half… Nice player tho and lots of potential.

  • 71 C.T. // Jul 20, 2007 at 18:14

Someone had 7.3million turned down for Barzagli. Palermo want minimum 10million. Reckon if Sam ups it by a million or offers 2million if we qualify for Europe we could strike a deal. Watch this space.
Drenth not worth 7million (yet), Shorey or Heinz would cost in the 7million mark so could be either of them. Ajax quoted around 8million for Emanuelson so maybe Sam has banged in a 7million offer. I watch quite a bit of Dutch football and I reckon Emanuelson would be well worth 7million.

  • 72 Kash // Jul 20, 2007 at 18:15

Riise is who i’d rather have. Maybe Lahm too, with Lahm on the right and Riise on the left. If Riise is unavailable, then Lahm can switch over with Geremi dropping in on Right.

  • 73 Kash // Jul 20, 2007 at 18:15

    Brinng back John Beresford!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 74 valle // Jul 20, 2007 at 18:19

    I thought u wanted height?

  • 75 AB // Jul 20, 2007 at 18:28

The fact the Lahm is right footed isn’t really a problem, you only really need to be left footed on the left side if you’re constantly supplying crosses. Yes that’s part of the full-back job description, but then we also have a left winger for that too. Lahm’s strongest point is the fact he’s a good defender and when he cuts inside he’s got a rocket of a right peg, take a look at the first goal of world cup 06!.

Also people seem to be going on about the lack of European football we can offer, well Bayern only qualified for the UEFA cup which isn’t the draw that Champs league is.

I doubt he’s coming, but if he does then it’ll be a huge coup, he’s possibly the best full back in Europe.

As for a question TOON1 asked ages ago, Giorgio CHIELLINI is a left back for Juventus. He’s also highly rated and apparently wants out of Juve. Liverpool are also interested which prompted me to suggest we could look at Riise.

If our bid is for any of the 3 mentioned there, I’ll be over the moon as they are all quality left-backs and just what we need. All are proven at the highest level, domestically and on the European stage.

  • 76 Rich // Jul 20, 2007 at 18:31

i hope Kash’s first comment was correct about Drenthe costing around #7mil.

he would give us cover for left wing and left back cuz i think with duff getting injured so much we need a bit more competition for Zog on that left wing.

It may be that Reading have been holding out for good money for Shorey and Sam has matched their asking price because hes youg, solid and has failty proved himself in the Prem then i think reading might be justified in asking for 7Mil in the current market.

Heinze would be good, but he seems a bit too much like a mecenary/pre-madonna football player… uses his elbow alot too.. i think with younger players like Drenthe & Shorey at least they seem to have uber-desire to suceed and i dont really see that in Heinze anymore…. i wouldnt say no to heinze but hey, anything Sam will get ahold of HAS to be better than Babs.

  • 77 Rich // Jul 20, 2007 at 18:32

^^ saying that about Drenthe, i just remember what Sam was saying a day or two ago about not signing foreingers until he had at least one or two proven prem defenders…

  • 78 Nicci // Jul 20, 2007 at 18:36

    Morning Glory, Please buy Shorey.

    A million Scousers every day
    listen to Man Utd say
    Toon for Heinze.

  • 79 Ross G // Jul 20, 2007 at 18:41

id like it to be curtis davies personally, or wayne bridge. I dont rate Baines much, and Nicky Shorey isn worth 7m, but with the inflated prices these days wouldnt be surprised. Still think we need 2CB, 1LB, 1DM, and a RB. Mine- Davies, Barzagli, Bridge, Young, Edmilson/Diarra

  • 80 valle // Jul 20, 2007 at 18:47

The funny thing of all this, is that Anal Oliver have some inside on the figure but not a name… What kind of a crappy insider is that!!!… “Well i can tell u that the guy will cost 1.5mil but the rest is up to u… so when do i get paid for the info?”. It seems like its Lee Ryder who runs the true sugar stories nowadays.

  • 81 TOONfan // Jul 20, 2007 at 19:15

I don’t think Bayern Munich would sell Lahm, no way. It would be a nice signing but i doubt it.
Heinze is top class and would be a great acqusition and any player in their right minds can see Newcastle is heading in the right direction now; I would hope a top proffesional like henze would want to be part of that, even if it meant being out of europe for a season.

  • 82 GI // Jul 20, 2007 at 19:38

First of all - great page Ed!

I really hope the bid is for Riise. He’s just what we need. He gives 110% every match, runs up and down the field all day and he also chips in with his share of goals, pretty ones I may add. He also can be used in the left winger role. I think he would be perfect for us.

  • 83 Greg B // Jul 20, 2007 at 19:50

And now Young isnt available either - going to Boro. Sam mustnt have rated him otherwise Id have hoped he could have convinced hi to come to Newcastle.

  • 84 bob // Jul 20, 2007 at 20:00

just seen boro have had a 2.5 mill bid accepted for young which is a bargin so i dnt see why we dnt quickly but a bid in or him otherwise it’ll be too late and he’ll sign 4 boro which would really take the piss

  • 85 tosty // Jul 20, 2007 at 20:09

    we arent movin fast enoughh!!!

the likes of fulham and west ham are beating us when it comes to acting quickly

hopfully thats all about to change

@LiamBirchy8, I agree with you that Lahm would be awesome (have put him up as my dream signing a few times here on nufcblog) but as said don’t think we can get him (I do hope I’m wrong).

And to the ppl saying Lahm wouldn’t be a good signing (as left back) since he is right footed… Well, first of all he started out as a right back and is atleast as good at the right side as the left. However, a few years back when he started to play at the left side he also started to do extra sessions to build up his ability with the left foot (source: long interview with Lahm in a quite brilliant Swedish football magazine called Offside) and personally I must say he seem to be quite accomplished with his left foot nowadays.

Although (as said) I don’t think Lahm will be sold to - or sign for - NUFC, he would definetly be a absolutley brilliant signing if I’m wrong and Sam can get him - regardless of being mainly right footed.

Well, look at it this way… We have 2,5mill easy, and we can push ahead of clubs like Boro and Villa. So if Sam dosnt enter, it must be because he wants someone better than Young and thats an encouraging thought isnt it?

  • 88 Ed Case // Jul 20, 2007 at 20:50

I’d say it’s Lahm - and I hope it is. He is quality, both on the right and left.
However, BS is quoted as saying he wants players with Premiership experience.

I sincerely hope Lahm will sign, and that 2 more with the Premiership experience arrive. Shorey for left back, Lahm for right back and a top central defender from the Premiership, failing that, as mentioned, Collocini is class.

It can’t be Heinze. Guardian says SAF says he won’t let Heinze play for an EPL team. http://football.guardian.co.uk/continentalfootball/story/0,,2130780,00.html?gusrc=rss&feed=5

lahm would be a great signing i have seen him play in germany we should also sign sherman cardenas though he is a bit young he is amix between solano and david beckham which makes me think sam willl like him as he is reportedley a big fan of both beckham and solano and also we cant forget about renauto augusto though him signing is extremely unlikely as big sam does not generally go for that sort of player.

  • 91 Ed Harrison // Jul 20, 2007 at 21:44

Philipp Lahm would be a fantastic signing for us.

  • 92 Greg B // Jul 20, 2007 at 21:46

Lahm dosent play left back for Munich and Germany for anyother reason than the fact he is awesome at left back. If he wasnt the likes of Pander would be playing there and Lahm at right back.
I personally think Lahm would cost 10mil+ and would prefer Sam to go for either Emanuelson (as I have said before) or Pander as an alternative left back. Reckon either of them would cost 4mil or so.
Barzagli is a must, he is class and I have no doubt he would fit in no problem. Him along with Curtis Davies would be adequate cover for center back.
Dunne at Man City would be another good signing if we could get him.

There are loads of quality player who would gladly play for us, and its all speculation till the club anounce who we are signing. Its nice to speculate though :)

Sam mustn’t have rated Luke Young.

You never know it could be a £7mill bid of wages to bring back

    Doni Howey Peacock Hottiger

    WOW!!!

seriously though we should buy Baines, Davies, Richards, lahm and Barzagli for the back line get rid of BABA babayaro and GET ME A CAR carr. MY BIG CHOICE FOR THE FUTURE IS Gonzalo Rodriguez of Villerreal. this guy is an amazing cb/sw solid and in time will become the rock at the heart of the Argentinian team!!!

  • 95 James // Jul 20, 2007 at 23:47

Gonzalo Rodriguez is a quality player would love to see ihim at the toon and i rekon he would fit straight into the team. Also i think if we got Micah Richards who can play everywhere and maybe Wayne Bridge in as left back would be a decent team.

    Given
    Richards,Rozenhal,Rodriguez,Bridge
    Milner,Barton,Dyer (CAM),Duff
    Owen/Martins

    Others;
    Harper
    Taylor,Geremi
    Nzogbia,Butt,Solano
    Viduka,Shola

Also i havent heard much on this James Trosi aprently impressing in training and had a stormer the other nite so im told????

  • 96 Hammy // Jul 20, 2007 at 23:54

    Wow,
very impressed with toon fans knowledge of European leftbacks……..I tend to agree with the view that a £7 million bid is a load of bollocks and a cunning ruse to sell some Chronicles since BSA’S early wheeling and dealing fizzled out…….if things don’t happen over the next week we may well be starting with Carr and Babs in the fullback positions (heaven forbid)
Bring back Dabs and Albert………at least they tried

not movin fast enough some one is either forgettin glen roeder or really likes sam allardyce west ham have signed as many players as us and they are not as class , and fulham are intent on buyin the whole northern ireland squad just cause they are linked with more doesn’ mean they are movin quicker they are are getin ripped off cause everyone knows that they have money, and are desperate, sounds like the souness era, also we have enough competion on the left wihout signing drenthe we need to buy an out and out left back who is solid and non-contriversial, have enough competition with duff, n’zogbia, luque(finger crossed) dyer and emre if needs be (used to play there at gala)

  • 98 sam gardner // Jul 21, 2007 at 9:07

what about burdisso or gonzalo maybe walter samuel

  • 99 sam gardner // Jul 21, 2007 at 9:08

lahm will be great signing but do not think it is him

  • 100 col // Jul 21, 2007 at 10:05

i aint read all the posts …but what about a cheeky bid for woodgate.

  • 101 nightfall // Jul 21, 2007 at 11:26

i’d like to see heinze or riise, colloccini or berzagli and lahm at the club… Sam…is this possible? :)

  • 102 john boater // Jul 21, 2007 at 14:32

7mil ? who knows… if that’s heinze’s buyout clause then it seems like the obvious candidate… inter and real sounds like rumours created by his agent to generate interest from prem clubs… lahm would be a dream signing..and the fact that bridge is injured makes it unlikely as SA said he wished this mystery player could have had his medical by now. the more i think about it, the more it looks like we’ll be going 4-3-3 this season with a barcelona type- defense into attack formation —given// lahm/ taylor (edmilson)/ rozenhal/ solano (carr)//butt/ barton (zog)/ geremi (Milner)// deco (dyer)// viduka (Shola)/owen (oba)

  • 103 henry // Jul 21, 2007 at 14:54
