Major Newcastle News Stories – July 24th – 2007

Here are the major news stories associated with the Newcastle club for today in no particular order of priority.

We run a story today on eight defenders we have been linked with in the past and review the case for bringing them to Newcastle.

There seems to be a lot of talent out there still available – the players we review are Leighton Baines, Brede Hangeland, Nicky Shorey, Fabricio Coloccini, Curtis Davies, Edmilson, Andrea Barzagli and Fabio Cannavaro – though we admit there’s not much chance of getting Fabio to the club.

Sam has been talking about how impressed he has been with another of our youngsters – Andrew Carroll – and says some glowing things about the 6’3″ youngster – but Sam has to decide whether to send him out on a season loan or not.

  • We are well aware of the frustration both Sam Allardyce and the fans are feeling right now with the efforts to being in new defenders to Newcastle. We run a piece today where we review eight defenders who we have been linked with in the past – and are still available.
Any three of these would be very good if we could only get them to Newcastle. We’d really like your feedback on these players – but as we said – we feel any three of them would seem to be good buys for the club. They’re not priced too high – except for Barzagli who is estimated to cost around £11M – but we are supposed to have plenty of money available in any case.

  • A story we published late last night on two topics – one was the statement from Joey Barton on his broken foot in which he admits to being devastated by the injury. The other is the news that Newcastle seem interested in Chinese captain Zheng Zhi – who briefly was on loan at Charlton last season. Birmingham are also thought to be interested in bringing Zhi back to England on loan. He can play midfield, central defense or as a striker.

  • Sam Allardyce has been singing in the praises of 18 year-old local striker Andrew Carroll. Carroll has played in both pre-season friendlies and had a good game at Carlisle United on Saturday. Andy is an imposing 6’3″ and right now Sam is not sure whether to keep him at the club this season or send him out on loan. We take a look at what Sam had to say about Carroll and review Andy’s career so far. He can be a great striker for us in the future.

  • Good story this morning on another of our youngsters James Troisi and what he has to say about fellow Aussie Mark Viduka. Mark is idolized back in Australia and James compares him to the adulation given to Alan Shearer in England. James has just turned 19 years-old earlier this month – and next season will be an important season for him to get some first team games in – before his current contract runs our next summer.

  • Here’s some funny football quotes – this is to lighten up the day. 😀

“It’s like a toaster, the ref’s shirt pocket. Every time there’s a tackle, up pops a yellow card.” Kevin Keegan

“You’re not just getting international football, you’re getting world football.” – Kevin Keegan

“He’s not quite at 110% fitness.” – John Motson

“I’ve lost count of how many chances Helsingborg have had. It’s at least five.” – John Motson

I see the Bolton part of the Vital Football website is running yet another anti-toon article (“everyone loves newcastle – sort of”). Big Sam leaving must have really hit ’em hard, as it seems they are running as many stories about Newcastle as Bolton! Now that really makes me laugh!!!! (see early story laughing at Barton’s injury).

Sammy Lee unproven premiership manager with a mediocre team, it’s inevitable what’s going to happen. He’s gonna get sacked and then he’ll come to Newcastle and become BSA number 2!

I read the same rubbish Ian. Bolton fans are so bitter it’s unbelievable. Why don’t they worry about their own team instead of wasting energy hating ours.

Yes, I don’t believe Bolton will do much under Sammy Lee.

By the way – on another story – why on Earth should we loan out Carroll (unless we sign another striker). We will get injuries and we need 5 strikers this season!

BSA must still have an eye on Gudjohnsen, and considering he’s injured now and Barca have got Spanish citizenship for Dos Santos, I don’t think EG will be back into the Barca team before January. Strong possibility that both Edmilson and Gudjohnsen sign in Jan. there are lots of Edmilson haters who frequent this site, but the fact is that he’s a top class player who is ahead of many players in the brazil team. If he’s good enough for Brazil then he’s good enough for me and Newcastyle!

Im starting to worry now as usual. The so called money we have isnt being spent and news seems to consist of us selling players and getting injuries. Why is it same old newcastle. One player not menioned as a target that would be quality at LB is Giorgio Chiellini the Italy U21 captain who wants to leave Juve. £6m and he is ours. He ticks most boxes Sam made including experience playing for Italy, and Juve in domestic and europe. He is about 6’3 also hich means he is big and strong and he can also attack. Maybe his biggest attribute is that he is a leader and a fighter, and him with Taylor can make a top defence for years to come. Maybe the best option at LB available right now. I would not be surprised if he became a major target the way our current buiness is going, watch this space…………

yeah I also read the rubbish from the bolton website. Was particularly annoyed with the fact they commented on toon fans not being knowledgable. While everyone in the world of football knows that newcastle fans are amongst the most knowledgable around.

The grapes are very sour in bolton at the moment.

I completely agree about Giorgio Chiellini, he would be a GREAT signing and its gets me SO annoyed seeing today on Sky Sports web site that he is linked with Man City and he is only 6m, WHY isn’t he linked with us??
Are we really worse than Man City??

Come on Big Sam buy him!!!!

What about Cehllini and Andrea Barzagli? 2 highly rated italians could help us to be solid. TBH I don’t care too much who we go for as long as we get SOMEONE! 2 1/2 weeks and we need a defence or we’ll be even weaker than last year!

I believe Allardyce is waiting on the outcome of the Heize situation. If Liverpool sign him then I think Sam has his eye on Riise. The trouble is I can’t see any quick moves in that respect and possibly Heize might even go to a European club. Then Riise stays at Liverpool, we miss out on our target. By then Baines will be a Sunderland player, Shorey will have either moved or signed a new contract and we’ll be left with N Zogbia playing the left back position until January.
I do have faith in Big Sam but the past won’t let me rest until certain gaps are filled.

If Dyer leaves then who do we sign to replace him? I know we’ve been linked to Baptista, but he’ll stay in Spain. So who else is there? Can we hijack Spurs move for Prince-Boateng? Or do we sign someone to play on the flank to provide more competition?

do we really have the money? i am getting worried… just talk and no action… at the end we’ll just sign 2-3 players on loan…one from china and the other from san marino…
as for Zheng Zhi…i’m not sure about him…chinesse national team sucks…sorry but it does…and there’s 2 billion of them and they can’t find a solid 11… i like japanesse players though…like their mentality…very discipline…strikers and midfielders are all returning back to help defending…

Why would we want to sell dyer..he provides too many options to just let go..not only that but he plays as well as any other in the premiership in all these positions..as for the defenders…baines and hoyte are must have players..they already have experince int he premiership at such a young age and have proved htemselves to be quality players…they can only get better!! hangeland is an exciting prospect but its happened to often recently that we get close to signing a player and then the deal falls through..barzagli would be awesome..he looks quallity on football manager!!

Dyer is a prick and he has not proved himself to Newcastle. His best season was the season when we had the run in Champions Leaguie with Bobby. Even then his attitude was questioned when we got thumped by Barca at home because he never tracked back with Xavi all game. I was told by door staff in town that he was out the night before that Barca game. I don’t want him because he’s a merc not a geordie. Bring back Rob Lee!!!!!!!
Sell Dyer and sign Appiah. He’s got an amazing engine on him and is a quality midfielder similar to Essien, who last year was the best midfielder in the PL!

ive got an idea, we should all crowd round outside SJP to demand an explaination on what the hell is going on because this is just getting silly now, every year the same old shit, we sign more attacking players and our defence just gets saved till last and then it ends up being too late!

Essien was the best midfielder by far and Appiah in my opinion is a poor mans version. Dyer is too inconsistent and does he really justify being paid £80k per week. Compare him to other players who earn that much, and ask yourself who you’d rather have. There is a reason why players get booed by there own fans, that reason is that the fans don’t see them doing the shirt justice. I haven’t seen dyer do our shirt justice for a while. The most passionate i’ve ever seen him was when he monkey punched bowyer in the mouth!

I cant understand how we have not signed any defenders yet? So many available! If the rumours are right and we have 50mil to spend. We should be getting in our targets! And as for dyer. He’s a good player but will he show his potential? But if we do sell him to west ham? Who do we replace him with? Baptista is a very good option in my eyes! Tough cookie and very versatile. But my top choice would be Wesley sneijder of ajax. Awesome! Ten cate would sell him a right price too!

    FREDDY SHEPHERD REPLACED

Chris Mort has just taken over from Freddy Shepher and Freddies cleared out his office…. ive been waiting for this day along time…. A LONG TIME.

saying that, Freddy captured players like Shearer, Owen, Woodgate, Owen, Martins etc… i suppose when you compare it to the number of flops maybe his record isnt soo good, but for us to get challenging back into the top 5/6 we need to be trying to splash some cash for good solid proven talented amazing players.

But we need to compete to sign the huge players of this world! We have spent enough years signing seconds! Shearer is the only world world class player i can think of that we have had in the last 20 years! Please for gods dont someone tell me owen!

Toughen up. Seriously. Listen to the players at the club.
Michael Owen. Damien Duff. Mark Viduka. Joey Barton. Steven Taylor. Shay Given. Kieron Dyer.
If 4 of them play above themselves we’ll have a great season.
If Sam can get a season out of Babayaro and Carr (2 international full backs remember) and maybe something out Nicky Butt then we’re laughing. Don’t forget we have a great squad on paper. I firmly believe that Graeme “Just work on your fitness” Souness and Glen “How many on a team?” Roeder’s substandard coaching are thouroughly to blame for a gash seasons the last 2 years. There will be a number of players revitalised I’m sure.

P.S. Dyer’s going nowhere. It’s exactly the same as Owen and Martins. Sam said exactly the same thing about them and after a chat nothing happened. Who other than the black and white circus would pay a total of £240,000 every week for such utter crap. That’s about 12mill a year on three players who could swan off at any moment for tuppence as soon as things start to look up. Thanks Fat Fred. What a legacy!

on paper yeah. but who knows how well some of the youngsters might be. remember sam made michael ricketts (not at oldham at the age of 28) an england international and sold him for 3-4million. he can make huntington a top man. and i think babayaro and carr might suprise some folk. and if he makes a footballer out of kooky luque then hells bells!
I’d like to see hypia or riise come, but that won’t happen quick. on the plus side i see rjikard is giving deco the cold shoulder… who knows?

I think the thing to look at is the large number of potential match winning players newcastle have. Owen can be the most devestating striker in the premiership, Viduka is an aussie therefore by default a winner, barton could be the new roy keane, Taylor is destined for John Terry hero status (alongside the skillfull Rozenhal), Duff is arguably the best left winger around, Martins has a shotgun attached to both ankles and Dyer is the fastest porceline man ever born. Now look at West Ham.
Dean Ashton is the man for them, Tevez is gone either deported or at Man Yoo, Faubert untested, Bellamy… well we all know he doesn’t deliver goals in the same quantity asa agro, Lucas Neil.. I’d rather have Taylor, Ljungberg who is arguably on his last legs. Who would you rather have?
I’m pretty happy currently. And we only need to sign 2 defenders in 6 wks. Things are pretty rosy at the toon. Have some perspective. So what if JB is out for 3 games of the season. There’s 35 more after that.

michael….like your comments, obviously well thought through and said with a degree of sense…a lot of fans seem to be getting nervous with a lack of transfer action……..makes you wonder what is going on behind the scenes….I don’t believe not being in Europe is putting players off coming to the toon….most modern footballers are motivated by the bucks (Beckham springs to mind) and Newcastle are certainly Champions League when it comes to the wage bill……..so, BSA is obviously chomping at the bit to get some bodies in which just leaves the guys that write the cheques……I think most fans would appreciate a statement from Mort as to exactly what the expectation level will be for the coming season……I see there is still plenty of season tickets still up for grabs. Mort and Ashley just need to release a statement to make the fans feel like they are on the verge of something special rather than on the verge of being fleeced for another £560…..

I think it’s fairly obvious whats happening at the club. Sam was brought in under Freddy and was able to use the plcs money to operate. Hence the four boys we have. When Ashley and Mort had over 50% of the club they still had to sanction those deals as they were effectively signed and sealed by the previous board. After he got the 75% he was able to dispose of the fat wastrels skimming off the top of the very lucrative toon milk. And then he was able to start his strategic review.

Douglas Shepard and Fat Fred + jr. have been god awful to this club. The buckets of cash that have flowed through the gates of SJP have been swallowed up by there engorged salaries and the salaries of the playboy flops they sanctioned through their own footballing ignorance safe in the knowledge that it wasn’t their own money they were wasting.

Newcastle United were in a heap of debt all borrowed against a stadium and infrastructure more valuable than any in the country. A stadium with unprecedented transport + facilities and all in the centre of a one team city. The potential of the club being realised by creditors only too happy to lend to the twits. If the club is successful they get their money, if not they get one of the jewels in the English football crowns.

Michael Ashley obviously had his interest sparked when Sam “should have been the England manager” Allardyce got the job, and all of a sudden Newcastle looked like the thinking billionaires cash cow. Especially with the 2 billion pounds telly deal.

The difference being that Ashley took the club private. To make money hand over fist he has to have a successful club attracting a lot of fans. If he wants to build the hotel across the road and FILL it every other Saturday he has to take them to the level of Man Yoo.

But the fact remains that before he invests millions of pounds of hard cash he needs to know where and who it’s going too. The previous board were neither terribly efficient or fruggle with there cash. Dolling it out for all the world to see. Before you give someone your wallet you make sure they aren’t going to the casino so to speak.

The fact that Freddy has gone perhaps signals that the review is nearly done. Maybe they no longer need his help in gaining the staffs co-operation. Or perhaps he was being obstructive and causing the review to last longer than anticipated and needed to be removed. My guess is the former as he has been in hospital.

What affects did the police confiscating all the computers have? Where the police tipped off by Mort & Ashley’s folk?

Mort certainly seems keen to invest, and he is the face of Mike Ashley so we must assume the owner is as well. However he brings up the review at every interview which suggests to me nothing will happen until it’s done and all the assets have been accounted for. He won’t want another Leeds after all.
So frustration for all Headline writers at the Chronicle, for the fans who are becoming impatient but most of all for Big Samuel Allardyce, who left Bolton to have a Kings ransom at his disposal and presently must watch it from the treasurey window as the bean counters tally it up. He’ll get his chance soon enough.
