Newcastle today are being linked with a move for Curtis Davies, the West Brom former captain and center-back.
This deal looks like it may come off because Luton Town defender Leon Barnett is set to join West Brom after the two clubs agreed a £2.5M transfer fee yesterday, according to the BBC.
If that deal goes through it would seem to leave it open for Davies to leave West Bromwich – who have been struggling to keep Curtis at the club.
Curtis Davies
21-year-old Leon Barnett, who was Luton’s player of the year for the 2006/2007 season, is due to speak with West Brom today and he could follow in the footsteps of Curtis Davies himself – who joined West Brom from Luton for £3M just under two years ago.
Newcastle have been linked with a move for 6’2″ Curtis Davies for some time now – with former manager Glenn Roeder interested in Curtis Davies in last January’s transfer window.
It is reported that Newcastle have offered £6M for the England Under-21 International who turned 22 years old last March. Davies already has premiership experience – as he spent the 2005-2006 in the Premiership with West Bromwich Albion when they were relegated. He performed extremely well during that period and caught the eye of a number of clubs.
We think Curtis would be a good buy for Newcastle and he’d need to fight it out with Steven Taylor and David Rozehnal for a starting spot on the Newcastle team. However, Curtis is ambitious and we think he would welcome the opportunity to join a club like Newcastle – who would appear to be going places under new manager Sam Allardyce, new owner Mike Ashley and new chairman Chris Mort as of yesterday.
West Brom are asking ₤8M – but we think Curtis Davies is overpriced and ₤6M appears a reasonable bid for the player. Curtis has a similar level of experience to our own Steven Taylor but missed the European Under-21 tournament in the summer due to injury. We believe that Tottenham and Aston Villa may be two of the clubs also pursuing Davies.
Curtis Davies started his career with Wimbledon as a trainee, at the age of 15 in 2000. He then joined Luton Town in 2002 and made his first team debut in 2003. He played for Luton 56 times scoring 2 goals. He was then transferred to West Bromwich Albion for ₤3M in 2005 and has played 65 times for them scoring 2 goals. He was captain of the club last season and has played for the England Under-21 team 3 times. Curtis is generally regarded as one of England’s best up and coming young defenders.

Comment #42easy tigers. we need 2 LBs 1/2 CBs but I do think a RB would be handy if possible too. I think we should bring in baines n young from under the noses of our loveable neighbours, if nothing else than to piss em off 😀 Davies might be a good signing but the couple of times I’ve seen him he has made some juicy Brambmle-esque errors so we’ll have to see.

Comment #44Another day and not even a sniff of any transfer action in the chronicle or the journal. Some good news though Emre has gone to Germany to see a specialist he’s also struggling with his weight,so it’s doubtful he’ll be ready for the start of the season, there’s another player we’re missing,O joy,Roll on 11 August

Comment #50Dingo : I also think Deco is unavailable, his an important player at Barca, however i have spoken to many Barca fans and they all say that if Barca would receive a good offer for Gudjohnsen they would let him go. I think we should try and bring him onboard.

Comment #53Mac – To answer your earlier question my 2 CB and 2 LB would be the following; Campbell, Barzagli, Chiellini, Shorey. Then i’d let Dyer leave and bring in Appiah. If there is any time left after that then pursue a top right back to come in and a superstar player such as Deco.
Deco has recently been left out by Rijkaard in a Barca 11 v 11 training match. The match was open to the public but Deco was nowhere to be seen and it was strange considering he’s fit! Gudjohnsen will be leaving Camp Nou also, as Barca wonderkid Dos Santos who Rijkaard sees as a better prospect than Messi, will acquire his spanish citizenship and will take his place in Rijkaards squad, replacing Gudjohnsen!

Comment #54looks like dyer is leavin nw big sam jus said that he may need to leave due to family probles altho he hast yet beeen listed or handed in a transfer request this is bad news espeacially with barton injured and only 2 weeks away frm the season so big sam needs to get biddin on sum top quality defenders and at least 1 midfielder DECO IS THE MAN

Comment #55Boring boring boring; speculations but nothing happens. Time is going very fast and the new season is only 2 & 1/2 weeks away. If nothing happens we will have the same bad star as we had the last years and the whole campaign will be hard, because we have to knock to clim up the table (after the bad start).
“We need defenders”: was the main subject of our tranfer targets and 2 things have happened:
1) The player didn’t want to come to NUFC (Beye or the mystery £7m defender from last week, anybody an idea who it was???).
2) Defenders being canstantly linked with our team and nothing happens. And if something happens then it’s IMO on the less quality targets (like Hangeland, big but will he be the man we need??).
I hope that the clouds above St. James disappear soon, but again my optimism is far away.
We also have a couple of players injured again: Owen, Emre, Barton. Who will be next?
I will end positively; Viduka will be sooner in Newcastle so he can be part of the plans for the beginning of the season.

Comment #58Kash – ‘Dos Santos who Rijkaard sees as a better prospect than Messi, will acquire his spanish citizenship’ – i think it was on sky a couple of days ago that he’d got his spanish citizenship, agree that Gudjohnsen is on his way out but is injured at the moment which is why Barca haven’t got him in Scotland.
Also agree that CB’s and LB’s are a priority, Carr is shit at RB but we can have it covered by Solano, Geremi and Ramage as a temporary fix. New RB still be nice tho after we’ve covered the other positions.
Baba is always injured and shit at LB anyway but we have no depth at covering this position so a new LB is a priority, we cant rely on the Zog and Edgar to bail us out the shit in that position….
Bring in Davies but please bring in Cambell to help bring Davies and Taylor forwards and upwards to another level….

Comment #59Davies & Taylor at CB? How to destroy two promising careers.
Davies does look good but we have Taylor who looks better – you couldn’t play them both together.
Get a LB in quickly, thats what is needed (Baines just knocked back the mackems, i’d go for him).

Comment #60Darren – I agree – they haven’t the experience yet to play together – would expect Rozehnal to be first choice with Taylor….but we are building a squad and we want players to fight for the shirt.

Comment #61Darren – i saw that – we’d be very happy if Sam brought in Baines – he wants to leave Wigan – surely he would come to Newcastle. What’s the hold up?

Comment #62Kash i agree with you again. I think ithe signing of Appiah would be genius and i also think Dyer is a c(*&
nt.
I’m also noticing a popular trend on this site, everyone seens to be in agreement that we should sigh Davies and try to bring in Campbell and Shorey those 3 alone would bringa little smile to my grumpy face, however even if we could get those on board in my opinion we’d still be atleast 3 players short.

Comment #63shorey and sol campbell for newcastle?yes please…but davies at the price?????god nooooooooooooo am i the only 1 here that thinks he is awful,i know football is a game of opinions but seriously i think he is no better than bramble,as for baines i think i read somewhere that he turned down the mackems because his wife is due to give birth so doesnt wanna move to the north east which would also rule out us anyway,i do believe that once heinze sorts his move out to liverpool riise will be on his way to newcastle and if we could add shorey and 1 of either campell and hypia then that would be a fantastic start

Comment #64WBA fan here. Davies performed at a good level in the Premiership. He has the raw ingredients – pace to die for in a CB – and contrary to other WBA fans I love his attitude. He wants to get on and I don’t begrudge him that. But you won’t get him for a penny under £8m and when I saw him play alongside Taylor for England under 21 I thought Taylor was better.

Comment #66The way sam is speaking and sounding so depressed I think we should stop thinking we are going to sign top quality players, its not looking good and even sam is down in the dumps so that doesnt fill me with confidence……..looks like another season of shite…unless he proves me wrong and actually gets a few in in the last month…….Just shows players dont look at newcastle as a big club anymore.
