Newcastle United are chasing Norwegian defender Brede Hangeland of FC Copenhagen according to SkySports.com – and the player’s agent says that Newcastle are one of the teams interested in acquiring Hangeland.
Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce is actively looking for at least three defenders to bring into the club before the season kicks off at Bolton on August 11th.
Sam Allardyce
Brede Hangeland has attracted the interest of a number of clubs after impressing for both club and country over the last few seasons.
The 26-year-old who has been linked with Newcastle for several weeks is said to be interested in a move to England – as he wants to play in a bigger European league. Copenhagen are reported to be reluctant to lose their 6’4†defender, but they are not likely to be able to turn down a reasonable offer for Hangeland.
The player’s agent Jim Solbakken admitted Newcastle were one of several clubs tracking his client Brede Hangeland.
“There is a lot of interest in Brede,” “Yes Newcastle are one of several clubs interested.
“Brede would definitely like to play in such a competition as the Premier League, but it depends on Copenhagen.
“If they receive the right offer and the right club comes in for Brede maybe he could leave.
“We will wait and see what happens.”
Newcastle fans are certainly hoping that new faces will be coming to Newcastle shortly – as we are still short of defensive cover. This is not unlike last season when we failed to sign the defenders we needed on the last day of the transfer window – and were left with inadequate cover. That squad became decimated by injury and many of Newcastle’s young players were drafted into the first team.
We still have over a month of the transfer window left and that is unlikely to happen under the watchful eyes of Sam Allardyce who is busy scouring the marker for defensive talent. Sam has said that his goal for this week is to bring in two defenders to Newcastle.
Comments always welcome.

Comment #1This would be a sign that we have given up hope of securing quality. I live in Denmark and i can promise u that this guy would be nothing more than a new Dabizas, and its not just my opinion, its shared by every singleperson i have discussed him with since his name was first brought up back in may… If we are giving up on premiership defenders, then at least buy someone from Europe with ability.

Comment #2On a site note, Luke Edwards showed his exceptional football knowledge when he later described Shorey as a right back.

I,ve heard that he’s not quick enough for the pace of the PremierLeague…. is this true in your opinion?

Comment #4i personally think he’s too slow… if we get only the type of players sam’s after (big, strong) we’ll have to watch out for counter attacks…

Comment #5Very true, he is a lumb and would get cought out by players with moderate pace… If we should buy a player from FCK it should be Gravgaard who is his partner in the centre of defense. But still, if we abandon our ambition to buy EPL experience, there are players to be found in leagues such as the Italian, Spanish and German league who are far better than anything we have in Denmark atm.

Comment #6I think this story is agent talk to be honest. If BSA really wanted him then he would have signed him before the agents could market him about using the press. Really the pool of players I hope BSA will be trying to broker deals for should be Riise, Shorey, Chiellini, Campbell, Barzagli. I can’t think of any other players who would be capable enough playing in the premiership. I think he has given up on signing another right back, considering Solano, Carr, Geremi and Ramage can all play there!

Comment #7Do you think Michael Dawson would be a realistic target? Spurs have loads of defenders and now they signed that Kaboul too, they’re flush with CB’s! If Brede is a tall lump, who is unproven, at least Dawson is a proven lump!!!!!

I dont want Ramage to play at RB, awfull player…
Solano, Carr, Geremi are enough along with Dyer as a possibility.

Comment #9i think we should go after:
-curtis davies – ‘cos of his prospect…together with taylor – future of england defence
-coloccini – only 4 mio…expirienced and only 25…in time other ARG players could follow him here
-emre for appiah…experienced…captain of ghana…other african players could follow him here
-for LB: heinze, riise, shorey, baines, chiellini – Sam, i don’t want to make all decisions by myself, so…you can pick one 🙂

Comment #11I agree with WelshWizard, Ramage is all heart and no skill and he also seem to be easily intimidated.

Comment #13Ramage is a squad player, and he provides cover for CB and RB, thats all. We shouldn’t discard him as he home grown and Toon through and through. He’ll always fight for the cause, unlike Dyer!

Comment #14Plus he’ll keep fighting to get into the first team, and provide excellent competition for places. We need more fighters like him!!!!!!!!

Comment #16Valle – I second your opinion on Hangeland (have commented on him before on this blog). I also reside in Denmark – and have seen him play several times. Strong in the air – slower than dumb truck – no technique whatsoever.. I sincerely hope that BSA is not contemplating buying him.. He would not take NUFC forward..

Comment #17Why are we always linked with players who are of the quality that we already have or perhaps if I read the above comments players (like Hangeland) who are not as good as players who already are at the club (Taylor). If we want to move on and become a strong squad that wants to win something then we need to step up in the transfer market and search quality players who give our squad that extra touch. I now it’s not easy, but if you don’t try anything then nothing will happen. BS ecently said that Heinze would not come to NUFC. Perhaps he was 500% right about that, but have we really tried to convince him; I don’t think so. So let’s look in Italy (defenders paradise 😉 ).
It’s time to step up and go after good players.
WelshWizard – I don’t agree about Ramage at all. Remember the West Ham game; he played +/- 15 minutes and gave 2 goals at them. Perhaps he has the heart to battle for a place, but for me if you put all defenders on the paper, then I would first choose Huntington and Edgar znd only if there is no other choice then I would have to pick Ramage. I hope BS sees it as quickly as possible the Ramage is not more than a Championship player. Sell him and hope that we don’t have to pay to get rid of him 😉 .

I said he wasn’t good enough, good squad player to give competition but not good enough for NUFC’s starting 11….we should even have better players than him on the bench…..I wouldn’t sell him tho, he’s got Geordie fight in him which rubs off onto better players about how passionate we are about our football in Newcastle….
