New Newcastle Chairman Chris Mort had his very first chance to include his own thoughts in tonight’s match program for the Newcastle-Celtic pre-season friendly at St. James’ Park.
It is the first time Chris has written notes for the match program and he took the opportunity to express his confidence in manager Sam Allardyce – which we think is very fitting.
Newcastle Chairman Chris Mort
In his communication Mort said:
“One of the last acts of the previous board was to capture Sam Allardyce as the club’s new manager after his departure from Bolton.â€
“We have not set specific targets for Sam and we are not going to make wild promises for the future.â€
“However, I think we have all been impressed by how Sam has set about his business as the new manager of Newcastle United.â€
“I hope that you’re as pleased as I am with the four excellent signings we have made in the pre-season to date.”
Mort also confirmed again that Sam was planning to bring in more new faces before the end of the summer.
“Building a squad that is capable of competing at the highest level will take time – nothing happens overnight – but we are confident that in due course, we can take this club to a higher level.â€
“Sam and I feel more signings will be required before we are ready for the new season, particularly to strengthen our defense.â€
Nothing much new here but confidence expressed in Big Sam – which you might expect at this stage. However, we have to say that Sam has been under obvious pressure – with not only doing the transfer business – but also having to communicate and help the new executive management coming on board. This has obviously been a little frustrating for him.
That may have shown a little in his comments to the press over the last two days where he is obviously as disappointed as the Newcastle fans in not being able to acquire some of the players he has pursued.
But we feel that is because Sam wants to do well at the club and is so driven. He is also very aware that he has to get off to a good start in the league come August.
While we are a little disappointed we have not made new signings over the last few weeks – we have the utmost confidence in both Sam Allardyce and Chris Mort – to get the club moving in the right direction. We just know that’s going to happen – and if anything – sooner than a lot of us think.
