Can Newcastle Attract Italian Left Back Chiellini?

Newcastle are looking for good left backs and one who is available but being actively pursued by Manchester City and maybe Liverpool is the Italian Under-21 captain Giorgio Chiellini.

Giorgio has 6 caps for Italy despite still being eligible for the Italian U-21 national team.

He captained Italy in this summer’s European Under-21 Championships in Holland and was named to the ‘UEFA Team of the Tournament’.

He is without doubt an up and coming young player of some potential but untested in the Premiership but is there any real chance of Sam getting Chiellini to Newcastle?

Let’s take a look.

giorgio-chiellini.jpg

Giorgio Chiellini

On 16 July it was reported that Liverpool had made a £5M offer to Juventus for
their young left back Giorgio Chiellini. Juventus are only prepared to sell the Italian U-21 captain for £7M. However only last week Sven Erikkson made a move for Chiellini and City are prepared to pay the £7M transfer fee so if Sam wants this player we had better move very quickly.

It appears that Liverpool’s interest in Chiellini may depend on what happens with the Heinze deal Liverpool are trying to do with Manchester United. If Liverpool are blocked in getting Heinze then it looks like they will go after Chiellini – if he’s still available.

Chiellini will be 23 years old next month so he is still quite young and at 6’1” fits the profile of full backs Sam Allardyce is trying to get to Newcastle.  Newcastle’s lack of European football next season may be a barrier to securing Georgio and we are aware it’s unusual for Italians to leave their homeland. Chiellini is a good player and the type of tall strong defender Allardyce would like to sign before the end of the transfer window.

But he’s available for ₤7M which is an interesting fee and we wonder if he could possibly be the player who turned us down a week or so ago. We may never know that – but that would even be encouraging if he was the player – because we would know at least Sam is going after real talent. If he did turn us down it couldn’t have been because of the lack of European football because Manchester City cannot provide that either and it looks like he may be close to agreeing a deal with City.

Since this is the first time we have brought up Chiellini on this site here is some information regarding his career so far.

Giorgio Chiellini was born August 14, 1984 in Pisa and currently plays for Juventus. He is an attacking left back who has also played in midfield. Chiellini started his career with Livorno in 2000 where he played for two years each in the Serie C1 and Serie B Italian leagues.

He was signed by Juventus in the summer 2004, for around ₤4M, but immediately sold on a co-ownership deal to Fiorentina for just over ₤2M, where he played for 2004/05 season. After an excellent first season in Serie A, he was recalled by Juventus for the 2005-06 season, where Juventus paid the extra ₤2M for full-ownership (strange deal).

Chiellini made his debut for the Italian national team in November 2004 against Finland, and has since become a regular squad member. He won the European Under-19 Championship with Italy in 2003, and was also a member of the Italian team that won the bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics.

He has so far won 6 caps for the Italian national team, despite still being eligible to play for Italian U-21 national team. He was named in the ‘UEFA Team of the Tournament’ of the 2007 U-21 Championships held in Holland where Italy qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics.

If Sam wants Chiellini now is the time to get in the ₤7M bid for him – and at least talk to the player before Manchester City agree the deal.

We think there is only a slight chance we can now get Chiellini – but hey that’s only our opinion – let us know what you think - comments  always appreciated.

The very reason of not playing in europe is quiet lame . If that was the case we wouldnt be seeing some quality players move to porstmouth ,west ham , villa, fulham etc . Birmingham are already on their little spending spree with totenham as usual. We have just got 4 players out of which 2 are FTs and the rest 2 were bought from the money couped by parkers sale . So effectively, we still havent spent a penny ! Talking about quality players , if we even want to think about attracting top players , i dont think so it would happen for the next 4-5 years till we become a prominent figure in europe .

Aaargh Ash , wheres the promised Cash ??

we were @ ED but since last 3 years our highest has been 7 and the year before that we scraped through as 6th and 5th respectively . Surely during the end of 90’s we were a top team infact a top 4 team , but these days top team means the top 4 i.e champions league. To attract players like deco, lahm etc would need loads of optimism!

Europe does not matter, its money that counts.

apart from Shorey & Heinze what other left backs are available with prem experience?

i think BSA needs to take his blnkers offf and expand his fishing net!!!

Havent heard of this chap.. However, his CV looks relatively impressive.. Of course NUFC havent had the best of luck with buying italian left backs (Pistone.. and then Coco – the guy on trial last year) – If Heinze is a viable option I would go for him, but I know that ‘Pool will be in front of us for him.. Hope that Fergie keeps his stubborn stance on not selling to the scousers – and then BSA can use his friendship with the drunk to seal the deal..

Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce has been told he has just £10million available for new signings – and that figure includes the wages of the players he brings in. Allardyce has already tabled a £500,000 bid for Bolton giant Abdoulaye Faye.

    – if this news is true i think we have to forget about chellini, we should go for bosingwa and faye instead, told ya MA is on budget

toonaholic – agree it will take longer to make top 4 – and yes those were now heady days under the great Bobby Robson – and he was sacked because we were 5th – ahhhhhhhh. So he was replaced by manager who immediately took us down to 14th position. Hope the new regime is better 😀

Chiellini would be a great buy even at 7 million, if we can get him. He’s big and strong + a very good defender —- like most Italians (except Pistone!). He’s built more like a CB to me but did very well at LB for their u-21’s.

One thing I can’t understand, is why Juve are even considering letting him go. Have they got someone better in their squad? I presume he’s an ambitious young player, so why would he join us or Man. City at this present time. I would have thought he will get better offers if he really is available.

Hope I’m wrong and we do get him!

Here’s the People article on the 10M transfer kitty story:

Here’s our story basically denying it can be true – but we need to hear from the board fairly quickly on what the truth is:

hopefully its not true ed if not it would be a bummer

chellini is worried about his first team opportunity and juventus and have a recent bust with ranieri, we could offer him a first team football and well of course we can match the wages and everythin offered by M.City well perhaps prob Sven is more well known than BSA that would be a challenge, but if he choose liverpool we might got a chance to get riise ey?

regarding faye i think he fits in the bill as a strong and tall CB with experience plus his cheap too! get him, get chellini get another RB or LB plus a midfield to replace dyer then we are set to go!

With Newcastle s experiance of foreign fullbacks, do we really need another one.
I have never heard or seen anything of this Chiellini, until this morning and what i have read sounds just like another Italian fullback we once had. Pistone.
I may be too cynical in my old age, but come on, buy british Were we not always told British is best.

Ed if you’re going to cite Wikipedia, I think you should be acknowledging that fact in your article.

IMO Chiellini would be ideal for the left back sport (I don’t think Shorey’s coming) but I don’t think we’re going to get him. The new regime seems to be very slow off the blocks and I think Man City could have him half in the bag already as their’s isn’t.

Mort need to start listening to BSA, and sharpish.

True, Sven’s signings have cost a lot but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they will be great players in the Premiership. Up until last season Bianchi was a rubbish striker – it may have been a one off that he scored 18 goals in one season. I think that was more goals than he had scored in his whole career put together. I would also wait to see Sven’s negative, Italian style of play before deciding if we should have appointed him. I would say Sven has more pulling power on the Continent but Sam is more respected in England and understands the English game better.

As for Chiellini, I think he would be a great buy. COuld have a cheeky word with some Juventus officials about a possible deal after the game this afternoon. Maybe we are on trial… He is captain of the Italy U 21s aswell so obviously has a great deal of influence and charisma on the pitch.

As for Liverpool after a left back, I simply cannot understand it. Apart from Ashley Cole I would say Riise is the best left back in the Premiership, so why would they replace him? Maybe they want to play him Left Midfield…? Whoever Liverpool bring in at left back I don’t think we will get Riise, especially as Chelsea were quoted £17 million when they earmarked him as an alternative if they didn’t land Cole.

t-g-w, I thought the same about Riise, but would Liverpool play him on the left when they have just signed Babel for around £13 million who can play there too? I think if heinze goes to Pool, we’ll get Riise and also get Silvestre from Man United. Ferguson will tell him to go.

Those 2 plus a couple of others will help us alot. If Dyer goes though, we’ll need 2 midfielders. If I was Sam, i’d look for a swap with one of the interested clubs as opposed to a straight cash deal. Dyer for Dawson? Spurs just spent a fortune on a CB. He might not be first choice.

    t-g-w –

I agree with you 100% on chiellini, he would be a great signing and seems to fit the bill in regard to what BS is looking for accept the EPL experience.

And the whole Heinze going to liverpool, WHAT IS THE POINT!
Liverpool don’t need another LM and Riise is one of the BEST LB.

If Heinze wants REGULAR play come to Newcastle get invloved in the NEW revolution, stop trying to tag on the end of liverpool a great team but when they win would he of really made a difference but at newcastle he will.

Hopefully after the friendly todday Chiellini will be siginig on for us you never know but BS seems SOOOOOO secrative over anyone he is inetrested in so you never know.

I know i posted this in another story by accident but here it is again. well i just read this as well http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_city/6918967.stm looks like he aint comming either. for all the comming and goings though I think we are a better team than we were last year… lets look at the Juve match this afternoon and see if it bouys us up again. Whatever cash we got, whoever we bring in, we are bringing them into a new new era at NUFC like it or not. The ball is rolling, as ever we will have to sit back and watch the highlights…… as long as we beat the makkams ill be happy this season, anything else is just a bonus.

Just because Juventus won’t stand in his way if he wants to leave doesn’t mean that Man City are guarenteed to get him… Our performance this afternoon could really impress him and there is always time to make a bid –
I doubt that Man CIty have done more than just make an enquiry about him yet.

Says in the chronicle Sam may be forced to look in Europe for defenders cos there are hardly any available with Prem experience, Chiellini falls into that category. However Sam wants Left Backs who can defend not those who are attacking-minded. I agree they must be able to defend but they also need to support down the wing.

Hi I know this may sound a bit radical but why not try Charles N’Zogbia at left back, He can play at both LW and LWB and he reminds me at times when he does get the chance there of a certain Olivier Bernard when he was decent ha ha. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

This 10 milllion transfer kitty is complete and utter, excuse my french, bullshit. At the beggining we had 20 mil and now mike ashley apparently according to a more viable newpaper than the fkin ‘people’ has been willing to add another 50mil if it is needed. I agree we should sell dyer however, replacing him is the least of our worries atm. That could wait till january.

In my opinion we need a full back that can play either side and a versatile defender that can also play in the holding midfield role. John Heitinga is not a natural full back but he is accomplished at RB and LB at both domestic and international level, he is a young, no-nonsense defender who would be good for the toon. As for the versatile defender/holding midfielder Jose Bosingwa who we have been linked with is a good target or even Faye.
