Four Foreign Full Backs For Newcastle

11:25 am, Monday, July 30th, 2007 by Ed Harrison · 49 Comments

Sam has already said he may have to look outside of England to bring in new defenders to Newcastle.

As far as England is concerned Luke Young has now signed for Middlesbrough and Nicky Shorey and Leighton Baines must not be available for whatever reason since Sam says there are no suitable and available English full-backs.

Sam doesn’t seem to want Fulham’s French full-back Franck Queudrue – but wouldn’t he be a very good signing for us now – given our dire position?  He fits Sam’s description of the player he wants – tall and strong with good premiership experience.

We take a look at four potential foreign full backs that seem available and investigate which ones may be Sam’s best bet to bring to Newcastle.

Newcastle Manager Sam Allardyce
Frantically searching for foreign defenders to bring to Newcastle

Cincinho – Real Madrid

Brazilian Cicinho signed a five year contract with Real Madrid two years ago but Real are willing to allow him to move on. Cicinho is 5’8” tall and has played 16 times for Brazil since his debut in 2005 and scored 1 goal. His previous clubs before Real Madrid were Botafogo (27 appearances – 3 goals), Athletico Mineiro (62 appearances – 8 goals), Sao Paulo FC (90 appearances and 18 goals). Cícero João de Cézare, nicknamed Cicinho (born June 24, 1980 in Pradópolis, São Paulo, Brazil), plays as a wingback or right-back. He is known for his combative tackling, darting runs and attacking play and has often been compared to Roberto Carlos, with his ability to attack. Not too sure of his transfer fee?

Jose Bosingwa – Porto

Porto’s right back Jose Bosingwa is thought to be a Newcastle target although Aston Villa are strongly linked with Jose over the last week. He is said to be rated at around ₤3M. Bosingwa (born August 24, 1982 in Kinshasa, DR Congo) previously played for Boavista FC, Porto’s local rivals. He has played for Porto 79 times since 2003, scored 2 goals and stands 6’0” tall.

Giorgio Chiellini – Juventus

In July it was reported that Liverpool had made a £5M offer to Juventus for their young left back Giorgio Chiellini. Juventus are only prepared to sell the Italian U-21 captain for £7M. However only last week Sven Erikkson made a move for Chiellini and City seem prepared to pay the £7M transfer fee and almost have him wrapped up. He didn’t in truth look too good yesterday in the second half at St. James’ Park and certainly not worth £7M.  If Sam wants this player he had better move very quickly – we think Chiellini must be a lot better than he looked yesterday.

Greta Steinsson – AZ Alkmaar

Grétar Rafn Steinsson (born January 9, 1982 in Siglufjörður) plays for AZ Alkmaar in Holland. He also plays regularly for the Iceland national team usually at right back but also on the right wing. In July, AZ Alkmaar announced they had accepted a £2.3M bid from Middlesbrough for Jose.  But after it was accepted Alkmaar amazingly then raised the price to £4M. Middlesbrough recently signed Luke Young so as far as we know nobody is currently after Greta. Asking price of £4M is too high.

There are four full-backs we know about – any if these worth going for? Who have we missed?
We’ll do a similar piece on center-backs later today or tomorrow.

Comments always welcome.

Out of them I would have Cicihno. He’s very fast, however if you seen what big sam has said we doesn’t want attacking minded ones. Cicihno is an attacking one. A dont know too much about the other ones.

  • 2 Edd Case // Jul 30, 2007 at 11:49 AM

I just hope we get any of the above in and very soon – things were looking very exciting but I’m getting quite worried now.

What I do not understand is why we aren’t spending money which is surely available?

  • 3 apan // Jul 30, 2007 at 11:53 AM

i think i go for bosingwa, his cheaper plus we know he can play in europe well and i dont think he would be lookin for european football that much as his from a local club as well…and he fits the bill tall and pacey plus strong in the air..cicinho is ok but i doubt he will come esp since his from REAL MADRID and his transfer fee wil be more tham 5m i reckon plus his not that tall?

cheillini didnt proved his tag worth yday but he only played for 30 mins so i dont think we can see much plus the left sided of juve that is always under constant pressure not his side but i think he is for the future plus he got strong built, not sure of the cost though 🙁

  • 4 evil dick // Jul 30, 2007 at 11:57 AM

If we don’t spend some serious cash in the next week then I don’t think there is any.

  • 5 Greg B // Jul 30, 2007 at 11:57 AM

Not sure about their availability but here are some left back, cant understand why Sam says there arent any? Maybe his standards are so high that many players slip through his net. But surely a half decent left back at the right price is better than no left back.

    Antonio López Guerrero:
    Mariano Pernía:
    Tomas Ujfalusi:
    Julien Escudé:
    Urby Emanuelson:
    Marcell Jansen:
    Diego Placente:
    Carlos Salcido:
    Giorgio Chiellini:
    Taye Taiwo:
    Luciano Zauri:

This is just a small selection, with many different backgrounds and nationalities. All different types of players with varying skills and valuations. I would bet that at leats 75% are available at the right price and again I believe that at least 50% of these would be suitable for Newcaslte. In fact all of them would seeing as we dont have a left back available at the moment!
I have left out unrealistic targets such as Lahm, and players like Grosso, Zonneveld and Capdevilla who Sam has already missed out on as they have recently joined new clubs.
So whoever is advising Allardyce that there are no left back out there is seriously misleading him, I think its more a case of not giving him the backing to bring one in! Any of the above list (and that is only a small selection) would be better than out current options, even if we could only bring them in on loan.

I honestly think that Chiellini is a must. He seems to have everything BSA wants apart from EPL experience. As for right back, Cicinho is good, but is he not too attacking for BSA’s liking? Not sure about the other 2, but BSA knows best and hopefully we’ll get what we need shortly!

  • 7 apan // Jul 30, 2007 at 11:59 AM

edd case – money which i surely available? you mean the 50 mil promised? have u been readin all this while, well it was until CM & MA found out our financial is more complex than they expected and we are 80 mil in debt, i assume we still have the money but probably less than 20 mil or so & the rumours of 10 mil for spendin this season is strongly linked with the reason why BSA is so pissed he came from bolton with hope of more fund! rumours but it makes sense somehow, for now BSA is doing good business 4 good players for less than 2 mil, better than roeder, gullit and much better than souness no doubt!

i guess after 2 fine performances yday but with lack of players the board will realize that we still need to spend afterall, good players come with good price tag right? not all though (boumsong for example or marcelinho) so BSA is being cautious, we dont want another flop thats for sure and waste that money and get another notch down from the euro spot

  • 8 Barry Bumhead // Jul 30, 2007 at 12:10 PM

Lets sign George McCartney and Stephen Wright….

    Taxiiiiiiiiiii !!!!!!

  • 9 stelios s // Jul 30, 2007 at 12:14 PM

what about john arner risse…it seems liverpool are looking for a new left is reported that if they dont get heinze then they would go agter Chiellini..and surely he would prefer to go there..that means risse is second choice…even though short (Allardyce has stated he wants height with his full backs) I really really like him as a player..strong and fast

  • 10 Cockney Magpie // Jul 30, 2007 at 12:22 PM

ED – can you shed any light on this?

  • 11 nightfall // Jul 30, 2007 at 12:23 PM

i’d take chielini and cicinho -> we need speed…

  • 12 Cockney Magpie // Jul 30, 2007 at 12:24 PM

if thats true then maybe there is no funds availible right now so he can only look for cheap deals and free transfers

  • 13 Mats // Jul 30, 2007 at 12:32 PM

What happened to Brede Hangeland? Is he not on the list? Also, how come Leighton Baines is still talking to Man City and Everton and not NUFC?

  • 14 Mats // Jul 30, 2007 at 12:32 PM

It looks like Sams hands are tied in the market…

  • 15 Greg B // Jul 30, 2007 at 12:35 PM

Cockney Magpie – Im pretty sure he has already joined Panathinaikos, ill check it out.

  • 16 Greg B // Jul 30, 2007 at 12:39 PM

Claudio Cacapa – listed as already signed for Panathinaikos. Dont know why that story has surfaced, its been suggested the media, with not much news at Newcastle at the minute, are resurfacing old stories to sell papers.

  • 17 shaun // Jul 30, 2007 at 12:39 PM

Guys – the board blatently do not want to be spending the money baines is available ed, hence why the mackems had a bid accepted for him. nightfall agree with chielini and cicinho surely they’re two of the best about, Sam would know that to and if he had the money would surely bid?

  • 18 MektiG // Jul 30, 2007 at 1:03 PM

    Greg B: Don’t trust wikipedia 😉
he has actually joined Al Rayyan from Qatar

  • 19 Cockney Magpie // Jul 30, 2007 at 1:03 PM

quick question 4 everybody, this news about ‘director of football’ what actually does a ‘director of football’ do at a club?

  • 20 nightfall // Jul 30, 2007 at 1:10 PM

    new link:

  • 21 HulioGeordio // Jul 30, 2007 at 1:10 PM

    Royston Drenthe, Feyenoord

Strong Left Back starred for Holland Under 21’s over the summer. We could do worse than sign this player. Very strong and good at going forward. He’d be better than what we got that’s for sure!

  • 22 Cockney Magpie // Jul 30, 2007 at 1:11 PM

also a bit of better news –

  • 23 Tom_Toon // Jul 30, 2007 at 1:16 PM

Bosingwa is the best option out of those 4 if you looking equally for attacking and defnding qualities.

Chiellini is a defending full back, his distribution and passing out of the defnce is absolutely awful and so is his crossing.

Cicinho is my second choice, very quick a good tackler and a brilliant crosser.

I dont really rate Steinsson the times ive seen him play hes just been average.

  • 24 Graham // Jul 30, 2007 at 1:16 PM

Cockney magpie – he gets in the way of the manager and slowly but surely pissis him off. he then becomes the new manager… cinical? – please no keegan return

  • 25 Ed Harrison // Jul 30, 2007 at 1:33 PM

Cockney Magpie and Mats – these are just the full-backs. Will have a piece on the center backs which as far as we know are Hangeland, Barzagli, Coloccini and Edmilson – also Olympique Lyon defender Claudio Cacapa who is a Brazilian center back and now free a free agent – we think Sam will not only go for him – but get him. He fits the players Sam likes to get for nothing. Big and strong but wuith excellent skills. Panathinaikos are in for him but think we’ll be better chocie for Claudio.

  • 26 MektiG // Jul 30, 2007 at 1:35 PM

Ed: He has signed for Al-Rayyan..

  • 27 MektiG // Jul 30, 2007 at 1:36 PM

Ed: Cacapa has signed for Al-Rayyan from Qatar..

  • 28 Kash // Jul 30, 2007 at 1:43 PM

The Chronicle states that we’re going to sign an experienced CB this week on a Free. That can only mean Cacapa or Big Sol if he buys his own contract out!

  • 29 Dave // Jul 30, 2007 at 1:59 PM

Has anyone picked up on the Boukary Draime (spelling?) story. If we get him it would be a very good signing.

  • 30 Josh // Jul 30, 2007 at 2:03 PM

Yes Sounds great if we could get him we should be VERY happy but until he has signed no point getting hopes up

  • 31 Kash // Jul 30, 2007 at 2:11 PM

How can Sochaux and Nice be any sort of competition for us? We’re bigger, better and pay more than french teams! Whats the obstacle then?

  • 32 Josh // Jul 30, 2007 at 2:11 PM

Cacapa has already gone to Al Rayyan

Dont know when it happened but if you check he has.

Bit annoying but how good can he be if he signed for them?????

  • 33 shaun // Jul 30, 2007 at 2:14 PM

Alan oliver talking rubbish again, no quotes and on no other site/media source as far as I can see. Would love it to be true though…just love it

  • 34 Kash // Jul 30, 2007 at 2:18 PM

Well it sounds like Alan Oliver is talking rubbish! But if Cacapa has gone then maybe its Big Sol!!!!! We can only hope and pray!

  • 35 Bosck // Jul 30, 2007 at 2:24 PM

Worst come to the worst, i would happily settle for Boukary Drame and Sol Campbell as the only siginings in defence, more would be great, but if we could get those 2 in we would be in a much stronger position.

Campbell does seem to be agitating for a move but Pompey seem reluctant to let him go, so not sure if that will happen. if Drame is on the move we definately need to get Rozenhal to have a word and tell him how great everything is here!!!

  • 36 Obafan // Jul 30, 2007 at 2:39 PM

    I hope Campbell comes to the toon. But I want also state that we missed a lot of possibilities in the past few weeks, due to;
    – European football? For me a weak excuse (look at Man City, West Ham, …)
    – money available; I start to concern that this is the big obstacle and that Mr Ashley doesn’t want to give BS the funds he need to strengthen up.

We have not chased lots of good defenders and then we are linked with Steinsson and Hangeland. Sorry for those 2 players, but they just are not good enough to play in the EPL.
Baines, Shorey, Young all available, never being strongly linked with the Toon.
I’ll wait and see what happens; but I’m not that optimistic anymore. What a start of the transfer period (under Shepphard) and now nothing happens.

  • 37 Todd // Jul 30, 2007 at 2:39 PM

Within a week I am going to log onto to this blog and there is going to be a huge animated banner indicated that the Magpies have in one day signed four excellent defenders and two excellent midfielder players and I am going to fall out of my chair with joy…
Right? Anyone? Why do I keep hearing this really loud ominous clock-ticking sound?….
What the hell is going on with this TEAM???????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Sorry…had to get that out.

  • 38 Greg B // Jul 30, 2007 at 3:10 PM

MektiG, thats for clearing the Cacapa thing up 🙂

  • 39 Keep Oba // Jul 30, 2007 at 3:23 PM

Oh I like Taye Taiwo…I would be very happy with him. Probably cheaper than Riise.

  • 40 Tom_Toon // Jul 30, 2007 at 3:27 PM

Taiwo is brilliant! Not to bright at defending. We should get Malik Fathi strong defensive left back with great attacking qualities, 23 years old currently playing for Hertha Berlin and the senior German National Team.

  • 41 Tom_Toon // Jul 30, 2007 at 3:31 PM

Also Malik Fathi would fit the bill for BSA, strong, tall, equally good at defending and attacking (fathi is probably better at defending), with premiership experience (german league is one of the closest you can ge tto the physicality of the EPL and Fathi has made 100 apps for Hertha since he was 17, he also has senior international caps).

  • 42 Ashton // Jul 30, 2007 at 4:40 PM

get chielini he is strong and big and he is defensive minded gust what SM need
so plz plz sign with him

  • 43 ravatooniac // Jul 30, 2007 at 4:41 PM

Anyone starting to wish we’d kept Bramble……………………………
    Nor me neither!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 44 Ed Harrison // Jul 30, 2007 at 6:14 PM

Greg B – send your list to Sam – quick!

  • 45 Alan Riley // Jul 30, 2007 at 7:28 PM

I see from Sky Sports that Dede’s move to Roma from Borussia Dortmund has fallen through ('s+Roma+move+collapses). Also, I gather, that Diego Placente is available from Celta Vigo on a free. I’m sure that both could do a job for us. No Premiership experience but good quality and substantial experience.

I’m sure Sam will get some experienced defenders in during this transfer window. The problem is that they probably aren’t the guys who were at the top of his original list.

  • 46 Josh // Jul 30, 2007 at 7:37 PM

    Been thinking about it.

I reckon because we have had a Big Takeover the papers REALLY want to know how much we have to spend, but All the board dont want that released as dont want to get mistaken for people who are going to WASTE money.
Sam has been told not to mention anything about money and players, but the right ones have not come up YET, but THEY WILL!!!!

So the SCUM of tabloid papers have made up a rubbish amount, in the HOPE that to ease the fans worries the board will then come out and say how much they are willing to spend.

The tabloid papers do it every year. NO ONE would BUY A BIG Club then not invest.

  • 47 Alan Riley // Jul 30, 2007 at 7:52 PM

Josh – I agree. Spot on mate.

If selling clubs know/think you’ve got loadsa dosh then they’ll probably stick a coupla mill on the price. So keep your cards close to your chest & move quietly.

  • 48 Bill F // Jul 31, 2007 at 10:19 AM

Personally I would rather see strong fast players for the defense. I don’t see the hang about about them being tall. If BS wants tall and strong there’s always Armand of PSG (I Think).
