Sam has already said he may have to look outside of England to bring in new defenders to Newcastle.
As far as England is concerned Luke Young has now signed for Middlesbrough and Nicky Shorey and Leighton Baines must not be available for whatever reason since Sam says there are no suitable and available English full-backs.
Sam doesn’t seem to want Fulham’s French full-back Franck Queudrue – but wouldn’t he be a very good signing for us now – given our dire position? He fits Sam’s description of the player he wants – tall and strong with good premiership experience.
We take a look at four potential foreign full backs that seem available and investigate which ones may be Sam’s best bet to bring to Newcastle.
Newcastle Manager Sam Allardyce
Frantically searching for foreign defenders to bring to Newcastle
Cincinho – Real Madrid
Brazilian Cicinho signed a five year contract with Real Madrid two years ago but Real are willing to allow him to move on. Cicinho is 5’8†tall and has played 16 times for Brazil since his debut in 2005 and scored 1 goal. His previous clubs before Real Madrid were Botafogo (27 appearances – 3 goals), Athletico Mineiro (62 appearances – 8 goals), Sao Paulo FC (90 appearances and 18 goals). CÃcero João de Cézare, nicknamed Cicinho (born June 24, 1980 in Pradópolis, São Paulo, Brazil), plays as a wingback or right-back. He is known for his combative tackling, darting runs and attacking play and has often been compared to Roberto Carlos, with his ability to attack. Not too sure of his transfer fee?
Jose Bosingwa – Porto
Porto’s right back Jose Bosingwa is thought to be a Newcastle target although Aston Villa are strongly linked with Jose over the last week. He is said to be rated at around ₤3M. Bosingwa (born August 24, 1982 in Kinshasa, DR Congo) previously played for Boavista FC, Porto’s local rivals. He has played for Porto 79 times since 2003, scored 2 goals and stands 6’0†tall.
Giorgio Chiellini – Juventus
In July it was reported that Liverpool had made a £5M offer to Juventus for their young left back Giorgio Chiellini. Juventus are only prepared to sell the Italian U-21 captain for £7M. However only last week Sven Erikkson made a move for Chiellini and City seem prepared to pay the £7M transfer fee and almost have him wrapped up. He didn’t in truth look too good yesterday in the second half at St. James’ Park and certainly not worth £7M. If Sam wants this player he had better move very quickly – we think Chiellini must be a lot better than he looked yesterday.
Greta Steinsson – AZ Alkmaar
Grétar Rafn Steinsson (born January 9, 1982 in Siglufjörður) plays for AZ Alkmaar in Holland. He also plays regularly for the Iceland national team usually at right back but also on the right wing. In July, AZ Alkmaar announced they had accepted a £2.3M bid from Middlesbrough for Jose. But after it was accepted Alkmaar amazingly then raised the price to £4M. Middlesbrough recently signed Luke Young so as far as we know nobody is currently after Greta. Asking price of £4M is too high.
There are four full-backs we know about – any if these worth going for? Who have we missed?
We’ll do a similar piece on center-backs later today or tomorrow.
Comments always welcome.

Comment #41Also Malik Fathi would fit the bill for BSA, strong, tall, equally good at defending and attacking (fathi is probably better at defending), with premiership experience (german league is one of the closest you can ge tto the physicality of the EPL and Fathi has made 100 apps for Hertha since he was 17, he also has senior international caps).

Comment #45I see from Sky Sports that Dede’s move to Roma from Borussia Dortmund has fallen through (http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=479373&CPID=22&clid=157&lid=8&title=Dede's+Roma+move+collapses). Also, I gather, that Diego Placente is available from Celta Vigo on a free. I’m sure that both could do a job for us. No Premiership experience but good quality and substantial experience.
I’m sure Sam will get some experienced defenders in during this transfer window. The problem is that they probably aren’t the guys who were at the top of his original list.

I reckon because we have had a Big Takeover the papers REALLY want to know how much we have to spend, but All the board dont want that released as dont want to get mistaken for people who are going to WASTE money.
Sam has been told not to mention anything about money and players, but the right ones have not come up YET, but THEY WILL!!!!
So the SCUM of tabloid papers have made up a rubbish amount, in the HOPE that to ease the fans worries the board will then come out and say how much they are willing to spend.
SO STOP WORRYING EVERYONE!!!
The tabloid papers do it every year. NO ONE would BUY A BIG Club then not invest.
COME ON TELL ME YOU AGREE?????????/

Comment #47Josh – I agree. Spot on mate.
If selling clubs know/think you’ve got loadsa dosh then they’ll probably stick a coupla mill on the price. So keep your cards close to your chest & move quietly.

Comment #48Personally I would rather see strong fast players for the defense. I don’t see the hang about about them being tall. If BS wants tall and strong there’s always Armand of PSG (I Think).
