Newcastle Too Late for Brazilian Claudio Cacapa?

Olympique Lyon defender and former club captain Claudio Cacapa was being offered to Newcastle United according to the Sunday Sun yesterday.

It was also a free transfer to boot since his contract expired at Lyon in the summer.

Let’s take a look at this and see why we weren’t after him like hot cakes.

Brazilian Claudio Cacapa

Last year Arsenal were considering a move for Cacapa when last July (2006) Wenger admitted he was in the market for a new defender and then 30 year-old Cacapa fitted the bill. The Brazilian was to be a replacement for released veteran Sol Campbell who finally ended up at Portsmouth. At the time Arsenal thought Lyon were asking too much (₤6M – ₤8M) for a 30 year-old.

Cacapa was Lyons’ club captain but was injured for most of last season starting only 9 games for the French Champions.

Capaca is 5′ 11” tall and he was at Lyon since 2001 and saw out his contract at the club. He started 113 games for Lyon with 10 substitute appearances and scored 9 goals. He won six French Championships at Lyon.

Claudio was born in May 1976 so for a Sam Allardyce player – he is not that old quite honestly and has lots of experience in the European Champions league.  Does he sound like a player we should be after? He certainly does to us.  Unfortunately just as we were going to press on this article - we had breaking news Cacapa had just signed for Al-Rayyan in Qatar.  We would hope this news is not true.

Why didn’t we jump at the chance for this player?   🙁

Well – here’s an article we put out on June 3rd this year mentioning Claudio Cacapa was available on a free transfer – so guess Sam wasn’t interested for whatever reason.

Cacapa Available on Free Transfer

We need experience and more players. And then we let these oppurtunities pass. I don’t understand it anymore. What is going on with the transfer policy at the toon?? I’m getting really frustrated now. Cacapa has all experience we need in our defence, but okay let him just move to another team without chasing him.
We will take the experienced Hangeland. What a disaster… When will we be active to strenghten our squad.

we are going to sign nobody. i was right all along everyone was’nt I. How come we have got no money when we have a billionaire in charge?? something is not right here. is alladyce been forced out or what already and he has not even been in the job 5 minutes. This is not good. For the good of the club, bloody give him 50 mill to get 7 players in. 4 defenders out of that.

I can see us being very short of defenders come the start of the Premier League. We’re struggling to put a decent defence together as it is.
All these years I’ve wanted rid of Shepherd. I’m beginning to think I was wrong.
Ashley and Mort are starting to piss me off. They obviously don’t have a clue how important it is to have a squad ready for the new season. It can make or break a team, the first 10 results.
If we think we can’t attract players now just wait until January.
Are Ashley and Mort forcing Sam out the door. If Sam can’t put a decent squad together and has to play players out of position and losing games because of it, how long will it take for the fans to get on his back.
I want this club to be up there with the rest of them and I want Big Sam to be part of it. FFS give Allardyce some f*&^%ng money!

You are right it’s not good but in the same sentence I don’t think the rat you’re smelling is as big as pushing Sam out of the door. He’s our best assett at the moment, bar none, and Mort n Ashley must know this. We need a statement from them because it’s not adding up really is it, where is the cash? Where are the players? Where are the dreams of four weeks ago floating off to? Too many rumours about the club and not enough happening on the ground, except two bloody good wins 🙂

Kash – that would be just phenomenal – better than Cacapa. He’d be welcomed to Newcastle big time. Hope his Geordie girlfriend is still working the deal for us. 😀

paul p – that would be terrible if that is going on. Not sure the fans would like that one little bit – if Sam being forced out.
    Surely this cannot be true.

now now, josh. Thats only rumours…. if he joins the mighty toon he MUST be straight…hehe…

well to be exact the rumour was him and Jenas and thats why Jenas moved down to London to be closer with Sol.. wonder what sort of signal Sol would be sending Jenas if he oved to NUFC?!?! could have our own little soap opera… Jermaine & Sol… what a couple… i bet Jenas is the taker.

on a serious note i believe Sam has got some big names lined up (at east im hoping so) weve let a number of prem defenders slip by, most of them im glad to see go to other teams (Luke Young for starters) and i believe BSA will show his hand shortly nd itll be 4 aces…. at least i hope….

Good story but I heard a different story on this from what is being reported. Early June I heard a long and interesting interview with a guy from one of the french football magazines on Talk Sport and he said then that henry would be leaving Arsenal. He also knew about Rozenhal (sp.) joining us and also mentioned this guy Cacapa. In fact he said Rozenhal would be the squad player and this guy was the best cenre half in france for many years and would be expected to join us as well (we were looking at him at the time apparently). Last year he said he had fallen out with Lyon officials and was forced to train with the Lyon kids for one year, the last year of his contract (so wasn’t injured). He said he was very professional about it and did not moan to the media etc so has been keeping his profile low.

neither do i. he’s the best man for the job and he needs to be backed. the money we got for scott parker was spent on barton and rozenhal. the other 2 were free transfer’s, so this promised £50 million, where is it and why has it not been given to sam, someone said to me keegan and and shearer are getting appointed. at the min, a want sam to be backed properly from what i have seen already, he could get us something this season with the right backing from mort and ashley.

we have to do something this week in the transfer market, otherwise we may as well right these season off already. talk about been down in numbers, when dyer leaves we will be even worse off. people out missing yesterday, we had, taylor, babayaro even though he’s shiteetee!!, butt, barton, duff, viduka, owen, ameobi all out injured, luque and milner picked up knocks also, 10 players injured and we have’nt started the season off yet. when u bring in kids to replace the senior players, its a bad state of affairs. we need some faces from somewhere…. desperatley.!!
