Olympique Lyon defender and former club captain Claudio Cacapa was being offered to Newcastle United according to the Sunday Sun yesterday.
It was also a free transfer to boot since his contract expired at Lyon in the summer.
Let’s take a look at this and see why we weren’t after him like hot cakes.
Brazilian Claudio Cacapa
Last year Arsenal were considering a move for Cacapa when last July (2006) Wenger admitted he was in the market for a new defender and then 30 year-old Cacapa fitted the bill. The Brazilian was to be a replacement for released veteran Sol Campbell who finally ended up at Portsmouth. At the time Arsenal thought Lyon were asking too much (₤6M – ₤8M) for a 30 year-old.
Cacapa was Lyons’ club captain but was injured for most of last season starting only 9 games for the French Champions.
Capaca is 5′ 11†tall and he was at Lyon since 2001 and saw out his contract at the club. He started 113 games for Lyon with 10 substitute appearances and scored 9 goals. He won six French Championships at Lyon.
Claudio was born in May 1976 so for a Sam Allardyce player – he is not that old quite honestly and has lots of experience in the European Champions league.  Does he sound like a player we should be after? He certainly does to us. Unfortunately just as we were going to press on this article - we had breaking news Cacapa had just signed for Al-Rayyan in Qatar. We would hope this news is not true.
Why didn’t we jump at the chance for this player? Â
Well – here’s an article we put out on June 3rd this year mentioning Claudio Cacapa was available on a free transfer – so guess Sam wasn’t interested for whatever reason.
