Major Newcastle News Stories – 3rd August – 2007

5:49 pm, Friday, August 3rd, 2007 by Ed Harrison · 64 Comments

It’s been a good day for Newcastle and of course for the Geordie faithful.
As if to put an end to the negative rumors that have been circulating around – it looks like the club recently launched a massive bid to bring in new players. Sam Allardyce only yesterday said Newcastle had made many bids for players .

It looks like quite a few of them are coming through.

Alan Smith signed today, we are very close on Claudio Cacapa for a free – and good breaking news today is that it now looks like we’ll get Ivica Dragutinovic from Sevilla for about ₤2.5M. Ivaca’s idol is Alan Shearer and he thinks it great if he can move to Newcastle United.

If we can indeed sign Capaca and Drago that will be 3 players the club has bought for around ₤6.5M. Those are great deals.

It’s only ₤6.5M because there are rumors that Smith may have only cost ₤4M rather than the ₤6M being quoted in the press. Since Manchester United are a public company they must formally announce the transfer fee to the City – so we’ll know shortly.

  • First things first – so here is the official signing of Alan Smith. He seems delighted to be at Newcastle and said some great things both about the club and Big Sam. Sam seems to have easily persuaded him to come to Tynesdie. He said 10 clubs were after him but as soon as he knew one was Newcastle that was it – good for him (and us).
    alan_smith2.jpg

Alan Smitht – Apparently the new strip has been ordered for him today – following the signing :D

  • Great late breaking news from a competent source – Sky Sports – that Serbian defender Ivica Dragutinovic is close to completing a deal to Newcastle. Drago (nickname) is a big fan of Alan Shearer and says in his comments “I would like to play for Newcastle in the Premiership.”  Add that positive comment to the fact a transfer fee of ₤2.5M is agreed with Sevilla and theyhave already signed Drago’s replacement – and it seems to us it’s a done deal.
    iva-dragutinovic_550226.jpg

Ivica Dragutinovic - Wants to sign for Newcastle United

  • It appears that Newcastle have bid for Leighton Baines of Wigan. That seems to be true but Everton have always been first choice for Leighton from what we understand. However, he has told friends he is willing to move from the NW if a suitable opportunity came his way. We would still expect Everton to get Leighton but we fo believe it’s true that we’ve bid for him.
But if Sam gets to talk to Leighton all bets are off and we wouldn’t be surprised if Sam can persuade him to join our revolution. Sam is starting to look like the perfect manager for Newcastle – at least in our view.

    leighton_baines-bw.jpg

Leighton Baines – We put him in a famous strip – but if he signs for Everton we will switch it back to blue

  • An article that is close to our hearts in terms of getting our players up to Sam’s standards of fitness. Unfortunately it looks like they are not even close. Good words from Sam about how he wants to get them fit and also cut down on the injuries. We have had 10 players injured in pre-season – the worst record of all premiership clubs :(
That’s something Sam knows he has to correct quickly if we are to have the successful season we are all hoping for (and some of us praying for). Sam says the injuries are high because the players are just not fit enough.

    sam-allardycepa_468×322.jpg

Big Sam – Orchestrating the busy transfer traffic at St. James’ :D
We noticed he’s letting more in than out

  • Good words from Chairman Chris Mort on Alan Shearer’s role as world-wide Ambassador to the club and of course also some words for Super Sam. It’s interesting to note in the article that he’s asked Alan to do more in his Ambassador role at the club. We suspect that one thing Alan has done – and it looks very successful – is talk to Drago and convince him to join our great club.
Certainly Shearer is known and liked throughout the football world – and as Drago says I know all about Alan Shearer and Newcastle United.   Newcastle United is there because that’s who his hero played for. That’s all to the good of the club and Chris Mort seems to understand that very well.
Chris also says glowing things about Sam – but we expect that now – because he deserves it :D
We like Chris Mort the more we hear from him.

    chris-mort-pensive.jpg

Chris Mort – Now let’s think – who else can Alan persuade to join Newcastle – wonder if he knows Ronaldinho?

  • Our first article today when we expected both Smith and Cacapa to be announced as Newcastle players. It’s happened for Smith but no news yet on Cacapa and since it’s now 5:45 pm in Newcastle it may not happen today – well we got one right   :D
    claudio.jpg

Claudio Cacapa – Still smiling because he thinks Newcastle will sign him – could happen tomorrow

  • Late news that Falkirk have agreed a loan deal to sign Newcastle’s Dutch goalkeeper Tim Krul for six months, subject to a medical.
Bairns boss John Hughes said on the Falkirk late this afternoon:

“He’s one I’ve watched and been impressed by on a number of occasions,”
“I think it shows how far this club has come when we’re able to attract the Dutch Under-21 goalkeeper when there was English Championship interest.” “

That’s a good move since Tim needs games – now we’ll have to bring in a third goalkeeper – but there may be a bid already in there if Sam is willing to approve a loan deal for Krul.

    tim-krul.jpg

Tim Krul – Young star keeper going on loan to Falkirk for 6 months

  • Finally here’s some funny football quotes – to lighten up the day :D

“Of the nine red cards this season we probably deserved half of them.” – Arsène Wenger

“Too many players were trying to score or create a goal.” – Gerard Houllier

“You can’t say my team aren’t winners. They’ve proved that by finishing fourth, third and second in the last three years.” – Gerard Houllier

    gerard-houllier.jpg

    Gerrard Houllier – winners?

A very busy day today Ed as regards the toon. Would expect Cacapa deal to be done tomorrow or Sunday before the match and Drago probably Monday. Would love Baines too but I also think he will choose Everton over us but hope not. We then have 3 weeks to get a right back in as it is not a real emergency there and we are sorted till January.

  • 2 apan // Aug 3, 2007 at 6:07 PM

I expect this 3 players will do some part in our friendly match againts sampdoria plus BSA is planning a close season friendly right, cant wait for the match againts Bolton, this season is our season to make an impact!

  • 3 Ryan // Aug 3, 2007 at 6:11 PM

A little worried on what the hold up for Cacapa could be. Hope everything is still going smoothly and we see him in the black and white soon. Same goes for Dragotunivic and Baines, fingers crossed. Seeing as Sam likes a 4-3-3 just wondering where all our wingers would figure in this, Milner, Nzogbia, Solano, Duff all sitting on the bench? Just a thought.

  • 4 Ed Harrison // Aug 3, 2007 at 6:13 PM

Ryan – same here on Capaca – really hope he passed the medical.
On the wingers – well our bench is going to be very strong – which is one sign of a decent team – and we hope Sam can keep everybody happy – but I’m sure he drills team work and team spirit into the lads – because that’s what it’s all about.

  • 5 Bev // Aug 3, 2007 at 6:15 PM

    New song for Alan Smith..

    He’s blond but he’s hard
    He’ll take your team apart
    He’s Alan Smith, Alan Smith
He now wears black and white,
Makes your team look soft as shite
    He’s Alan Smith, Alan Smith

I know I know I have waaaay too much spare time :)

  • 6 GL // Aug 3, 2007 at 6:15 PM

Its starting to look like next season St James Park, might just scare a few teams!!

  • 7 Ed Harrison // Aug 3, 2007 at 6:18 PM

Howie – if we do sign Cacapa tomorrow we think Sam now has the minimum he needed before the Bolton game – a LB (Drago) a center-back (Capaca) and a midfielder to replace Dyer. But looks like more may be on the way – Papa Bouba Diop for one (we hope). The back four could be: Geremi Cacapa Rozehnal Drago
But we’d like to see Geremi in midfield so perhaps Sam will bring in another right back plus Diop – we also need a third keeper if Tim’s gone on loan.

  • 8 Ed Harrison // Aug 3, 2007 at 6:20 PM

If we get all these players in we then need to take Bolton apart on Aug 11th.

  • 9 darren grech MALTA // Aug 3, 2007 at 6:20 PM

hi,i’m DARREN from MALTA.certenly things looks much better around newcastle utd since the appointment of SAM ALLARDYCE.he is going to be a hero for sure.you can see the type of signings that he made so far and all the players said how they are looking forword to be part of BIG SAM’S plans.thanks god we have great maneger now and hope that more quolity players will join the toon..LOVE YOU GORDIES FROM MALTA

  • 10 Howie // Aug 3, 2007 at 6:27 PM

I would much prefer a right back to a defensive midfielder as Geremi is a much better midfielder than right back. Can’t think of any right back but I’m sure Sam will unearth a gem of course before 31st aug (hopefully 11th aug). Diop seems the obvious candidate if he is after a def mid aswell but I’m not too sure about him. Seems injury prone and if he was any good wouldn’t Lawrie Sanchez want more than 3m for him. I think that transfer is just paper talk unlike Drago and Baines.

  • 11 dirk // Aug 3, 2007 at 6:31 PM

Is this drago any good though? Everyone on here is raving about him, but how many people had actually heard of him before our interest in him became known?
The same goes for Cacapa. Yes, I know how many league titles he has won, but he also sat on the bench for most of the last season? You dont see the best sides running to get players like those two.
I am pleased with the signing of smudge – a true warrior, and a class player
We need more signings of this quality – Appiah would certainly fit the bill. Come on Sam, sign some quality!

  • 12 Cockney Magpie // Aug 3, 2007 at 6:34 PM

IM SO F****NG HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i havent been this excited about the new season ever i dont think!! if we get baines and drago and the cacapa deal goes smoothly i think i will even be going to Old Trafford and The Bridge beliving we can come away with 3 points and also will feel inside that finishing in the top 4 is by no means a distant dream!

  • 13 Howie // Aug 3, 2007 at 6:36 PM

Drago started for a very good Sevilla side consistently for the past 2 years and he wouldn’t have if he was not any good. As for Cacapa he was injured and then fell out with Houlier so that is why he didn’t play last year. Before that he was the main man at the back for them and lyon always impressed me in the champs league so he must be good and sure he is a free transfer so it is well worth the risk.

  • 14 Cockney Magpie // Aug 3, 2007 at 6:42 PM

Dirk, u dont see the players running for players like Cacapa and Drago becuase they already have players like Terry, Carvalho, Ashley Cole, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Carragher, Hyypia, Gallas, Eboue etc. Defence is not exactly their priority other wise im sure they would snap up players like Cacapa and Drago if they needed them, like we do. And also do u really think Big Sam is going to sign somebody he knows nothing about? Lets be real about this mate if Sam thinks they are good we have to believe him because i think he knows a little more about them than we do.

  • 15 Cockney Magpie // Aug 3, 2007 at 6:43 PM

i meant u dont c the big teams running for players like cacapa and drago, not u dont c players running for players lol

  • 16 JEFFBRUM // Aug 3, 2007 at 6:46 PM

THE FANTASY DEFENCES SUGGESTED LOOK GOOD- BUT WHAT ABOUT STEVEN TAYLOR !!!!! HE NEEDS TO BE ONE OF THE FIRST NAME ON THE TEAM SHEET.

  • 17 Rich // Aug 3, 2007 at 6:47 PM

Dirk, Arsenal tried to buy Drago at the end of the season before last as a replacement for Sol, but Lyon slapped an 8Mil asking price on, Wenger described him as the ‘ideal replacement’ if i remember correctly.

dont know much about Drag apart from he can play LB or CB, the other thing i know is that he gave a spanish comedian a black eye at the training pitch when the comedian squeezed his ass or something….

  • 18 dirk // Aug 3, 2007 at 6:51 PM

Thanks Howie. I’m glad that you have actually heard of drago.
The main issue for me is that if these players are so good, how come nobody else is figting with us to sign them. Everybody is euphoric at the moment just because we are signing a player and because he is TALL. I’m just worried that these guys are going to turn out ‘mediocre’
Anybody remember marcelino, pistone, andersson to name a few. All big players signed from big clubs.
When the new owner took over, I was expecting world class arrivals (don’t confuse this with superstars)

  • 19 Ed Harrison // Aug 3, 2007 at 6:56 PM

Rich – it wasn’t Drago Arsenal tried to buy – it was Cacapa from Lyon.

  • 20 dirk // Aug 3, 2007 at 6:57 PM

Cacapa really intrigues me. I am really hoping that the new arrivals will be first class, but the last time I saw a Brazilian centre half in the prem, his name was Roque Junior, and he was worse than Bramble. He was also a starter for the national Brazil team!

  • 21 Hog // Aug 3, 2007 at 7:10 PM

Feeling more optimistic now!!!!! Come on Big Sam……hope he’s right about these new boys. The way I see it, I havent heard of Drago/Cacapa, but then I figure Big Sam said he wasnt interested in a lot of players that I would consider good, so these guys must be better. Also the signings he made a bolton were spot on. And economical. My only worry is that he wont play the attacking football I remember at newcastle in the keegan era, but with a quality backline, hopefully we’ll have no choice BUT to play attacking football, cos the ball will never be in our half!!

  • 22 apan // Aug 3, 2007 at 7:27 PM

DIRK- BSA knows what his doing, his not signing sh*ty players and if he do sign some of that type i reckon he would turn them into superb players

drago- i saw him played at the world cup for serbia, very consistent very good psychically, pace is ok and the serbs only let in 2 goals…yes you saw how well seville played last season and the season before he played a part too, have u been reading the paper or anythin? M.city is also keen on this player so when u said why no clubs are after him ur totally wrong man!

cacappa- lyon’s captain for 5 years signed for a brazillian club, a bit lack in pace but such an intelligent playera & have a vast experience, he didnt play much last season due to injuries and fall out with his manager, reason? He doesnt want to sign a new contract! So see how good he is, go to you tube and type his farewell was just as superb as a testimonial game! Show how much lyon will miss his service, arsenal saw him as a perfect replacement for sol campbell but the askin price was too high, Panathinaikos and the Qatari club Al-Rayyan were also interested for his service again read, even houlier backin us now by sayin we make a terrific signing

a word from BSA to the fans im sure uve read this,if dont plz do read

“Our fans shouldn’t be put off by the fact they might not have heard of Caçapa,” said Allardyce. “He’s a top player and we will be delighted if we can pull this off. We regard him as a big capture.”

    cheers mate~

  • 23 joel gledhill // Aug 3, 2007 at 7:34 PM

hurry up big sam sign Cacapa already!!!! (GETTING WORRIED PEOPLE!)
    we need the quality!!!

  • 24 apan // Aug 3, 2007 at 7:40 PM

*signed from a brazillian club, sorry for the error :)

After watchin our new players performed on friendly and how bolton fare out with unknown players, i trust BSA judgement, his that damn good guys, his our best signing

  • 25 apan // Aug 3, 2007 at 7:48 PM

Breaking News: Brazilian Signs For Toon

BRAZILIAN centre-back Claudio Cacapa has become Sam Allardyce’s second signing within 12 hours after penning a two-year deal at St.James’ Park.

The 31-year-old joins the Magpies under freedom of contract having left French champions Lyon at the end of last season.

    CONFIRMED!!!!

  • 26 dirk // Aug 3, 2007 at 7:53 PM

apan. I have been reading the papers, but I don’t believe everything I read in them. That is the difference.
I have been around for too long, supporting this great club, and I have seen many mediocre (even utter shite) players arrive at this club, after being championed in the papers as being world beaters!
I wont get excited about a player until I have seen him play. I look forward to seeing him in action, but we still need more signings, especially big ones.

  • 27 Ben // Aug 3, 2007 at 7:57 PM

Good news, but I notice there are no news about Dyer. Is he really sold to West Ham?

He’s a left back and a damn good one at that apparently! :D

Spanish u21 international regular. That’s all I know up to now.

    Anyone know more about him?

Of course I won’t believe it until I hear Sam comment on it.

  • 40 Todd // Aug 3, 2007 at 8:33 PM

Can’t take credit for spotting it. A guy listed as “smrt” on another message board spotted it in on a Norwegian Villarreal forum I think. How is that for obscure. But it says it right there on Villarreal’s website so seems pretty solid to me. I know it is getting late in England and the news seems to all be about Leeds latest depressing crud but maybe it will break soon. I think José Enrique Sánchez Díaz plays at left back and may have some Spanish national team caps but I am not sure. He is really young so his stats are not too lengthy. Nonetheless, a great day so far.

  • 41 Tom_Toon // Aug 3, 2007 at 8:36 PM

Hope will still get drago :), now we dont needs Baines

  • 42 StevieA // Aug 3, 2007 at 8:40 PM

Here we go. Story translated to (very bad) english!

The Villarreal and the Newcastle have reached an agreement for the crossing from Jose Enrique to the English club according to has announced the castellonense equipment in their official Web. The young player will also agree in his new equipment with the Spanish Albert Luque.

Lateral the left one, of only 21 years, will give therefore the jump to a Premier League that every day more is hispanicized. Jose Enrique Sanchez formed in soccer bases of the Valencia and has blunted in the yellow club in the last season.

Basically we have a agreed a fee with the club. Plus it sounds like the player is very keen on the move too.

  • 43 iluvnufc // Aug 3, 2007 at 8:41 PM

Just checked the Villareal site and he is a left back, Played for the Spanish U21´s. No mention of a transfer fee but they thank him for his services to the club and wish him all the best for the future. I live in Spain so speak a bit of Spanish. This is the gist

  • 44 StevieA // Aug 3, 2007 at 8:42 PM

Found this on Newcastle-Online too. Below.

Newcastle have agreed a fee to sign Villarreal’s 21-year-old left back Jose Enrique Sanchez. Details haven’t been announced yet but according to some sources the fee is around £4m.

Enrique arrived to Villarreal from Valencia last season for a nominal fee and quickly became a favourite among the fans. His performances weren’t good enough for the chairman of the club though and he was replaced by a Spanish international Joan Capdevila.

Spanish media reckon that the player will sign a 6-year deal at Newcastle. The news broke out of the blue tonight after the English media spent their day linking the club with the signing of Leighton Baines from Wigan.

The view among Villarreal fans is that Newcastle have just made a brilliant coup. They seem convinced that the young left back is bound to be a full Spanish international in the future.

Hope this is allowed. I have given credit so hopefully it’s ok. At least it’s more information. Fans are usually right about players too! :D

  • 57 Tom_Toon // Aug 3, 2007 at 9:04 PM

    and did well i heard.

Drago to come, not immensly keen on baines. We need a decent RB now and maybe 1 CB then we are sorted!

  • 58 joel gledhill // Aug 3, 2007 at 9:05 PM

toonholic/yea hope sam knows wat hes doin (leghton baines would be a good idea)

  • 59 Tony_D // Aug 3, 2007 at 9:07 PM

Toonoholic, He did also say that he has missed out on a number of signings because of either the new management or players not wanting to come to NUFC.

Looks like 3 good deals today though!!!

  • 60 toonoholic // Aug 3, 2007 at 9:09 PM

if baines comes too . it wld be a shocker .. i am personally not so pleased to see smith in the side .. we have 6 strikers already counting luque and carroll and now smith ?? with all due respect hes a good player and am happy hes a magpie now but with 6 strikers i am a bit confused what B.S. is upto .. looks like this ends our try for gudjhonsen. if baines comes in too then its bye bye babayaro and with drago as good as in only spot left is rightback and a “suitable” replacement for dyer” . btw if barton goes to jail for 5 years what do we do ? lol

  • 61 LiamBirchy8 // Aug 3, 2007 at 9:22 PM

diop 3m is the minimum more we need. however i would love baines 5m and glen johnson on loan. i think we still need baines because drag would act as a centre half.

Hello I am a fan of the Newcastle United who lives through it from Spain. I believe that a player would need the Newcastle with more experience that that of José Enrique. It is a question of a young player and with future. Which is the formation of the team? Are 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 played always by a formation?
