Leighton Baines Could Be Next Big Newcastle Signing

Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce has told the Daily Star he could make a move for Wigan’s Leighton Baines.

As we all know Sam, along with the rest of Newcastle’s new management, are working incredibly hard to bring in defensive reinforcements ahead of the new season and a new left-back is one of Sam’s top targets.

We are signing Jose Enrique from Villareal next week and we thought that may rule out a move for Leighton. But obviously Sam wants even more strength is his squad especially at our problem position of left back.

Leighton Baines – next big signing for Newcastle?

Leighton Baines’ future at Wigan has been the subject of intense speculation all summer long with the player snubbing a move to Sunderland after holding talks with the North-East club. We know Sam watched Leighton during the European Under-21 tournament  earlier this summer and there was speculation even then that he was a Newcastle target.

We think Newcastle have already lodged a bid for Leighton of around ₤5M but thought Everton were always favorites since Leighton had said that’s his preferred club. But we also said if Sam ever gets to talk to Leighton anything could happen because all can see how Allardyce and the Newcastle Board are determined to build a solid squad this summer with all the dramatic transfer dealings yesterday. We also know that Baines told friends recently he would move from the NW if a suitable opportunity was offered to him. Maybe Newcastle United is that opportunity.

The Newcastle transfer momentum is now huge after yesterday and it wouldn’t surprise us if Baines now wants to come to Newcastle. Hopefully his England Under-21 team mates James Milner and Steven Taylor have already been on their cell phones to him – if they haven’t they need to 😀

Wigan rejected a player plus cash offer from Everton for the England Under-21 international a few days ago and it appears Newcastle are now engaged in the bidding for Baines with Allardyce said to be a big admirer of the talented full-back.

This is what Super Sam told the Daily Star today:

“Leighton Baines might be a possibility,”
“He hasn’t moved from Wigan yet and we need a defender.”

Don’t be surprised if Baines is a Newcastle player within the next few days – all good players want to join a club obviously on the move and Newcastle have left nobody in doubt as to their intentions regarding the club’s future.

Couple this with the incredible facilities and fantastic fan base already at the club with 52,000 screaming Geordies supporting the team at every home game – and even some of us old supporters are thinking of getting the boots out to give it a try (but cannot find them)   😀

Comments always welcome – is Leighton our next big signing?

Could be a possibility but don’t think we will sign both Baines and Enrique. I think this story may have been conjured up before the announcement about Enrique last night and therefore it is a bit out of date.

I think there’s two very good reasons we’d sign Baines.

    1. Squad depth, simple as that.
    2. He’s an attack minded LB who loves darting up the wing, Enrique not so much. more options for different game situations.

    🙂 can’t wipe the smile!

    Hola

If we get Enrique and Drago – do we need Baines? (Good player though he is)

I also wonder at RB we have Geremi, Solano and, very much in last place, Carr (awful player!)

LB – Drago, Enrique, Babayaro……..Baines might be a player too far. I wonder if we are better getting a Central Midfielder such as Diop (Who I rate very highly) as Butt is pushing 33, Barton could well be a Windsor Group Hotel Guest for a while and that leaves Smith and Zog which, class though they are, as the only 2 senior central midfielders and we might need Zog on the left.

I am HOPING that Dyer just LEAVES!

How do people rate Emre? I am abit mixed about him – at times he was awful last year.

Milner – absolutely superb player and along with Smith part of the long term ‘British Isles Spine’ of the team.

N’Zogbia – now we have a proper man manager at the helm I think we might see a return of the ZOG from the season before last that we all know and love! Go Charles!

Am impressed with the whole new management setup – it is clear they are learning a little on their feet as they go but at least the setup reeks of business professionals and not bungling amatuerism. I for one think Us Toon Fans are due a few years of MAn Utd/Arsenal – esque quality both on and off the pitch rather then the soap opera we have been subjected to over the past three seasons.

Am just grinning all over today!

Dave 😎 ,I’d prefer Baines to the traditional ‘lets blow the budget and rack up the debt’ Hand Grenade signing!

i agree with t-g-w.. if we get enrique, we probably wont sign bains. drago can also play left back, and thats enough cover (if he signs). i would like a good right back. and if we get that, plus enrique and drago, i think we can really look forward to the new season (not that i dont do that anyway 😉 ) which right backs would suit us?? we need a really good one 🙂

Geremi is an excellant RB if we can’t find better.

I thought Nobby did well there and with Milner and Smith to play at RM then perhaps we could get Papa Diop as first choice DM and use Geremi as first choice RB?

These are all great dilemmas to have – beats…’I wonder how Souness will play totally out of position today?’

Just had a thought – how about Liam Rosenior for RB.
He had a v good season for Fulham in a poor side and might, I stress the might, blossom under Sam?

Or possibly how about Moritz Voltz? Another Fulham player wanting a new start and he can play across the defence and midfield.

Man I just read Alan Olivers column in the chronicle….. he says this

“Despite the signings of Smith and Cacapa, these are not happy days for Big Sam.
In addition, it appears Oba Martins’ agents have been told to find him a new club – but Owen’s injury problems could put a stop to that.”

what is wrong with this guy….. he can turn optamism into desperation in one foul swoop. So Sam is unhappy and oba n out apperently…. Alan i would watch yer car and put egg protectors on yer windows mate!

of course there is a chance we’ll sign enrique AND baines we need to so how not t-g-w- ???.

Be the 2 more signings we need if we keep dyer which i hope we do as when he is fit and in form he is lethal. Being in every single england team when he is fit under a lot of different managers says it all.

BSA has been quoted saying that 1 of the reasons he took the newcastle job was to work with dyer so if BSA can keep him fit then he will open up defences 4 fun why do you think the toon board have upped their offer cos he has gettin over all his injuries now his medical proved that and at 6m they will be gettin a bargain thats how good he is rated!!!!!!

c’mon BSA and the lads deffo a chance of champ football this season !!!!!

Anyone else a bit sceptical due to the seeming exclusivity of the Daily Star on this story? BSA has given a few interviews these past few days yet the only source for this info is one of the worst rags in the country. IMO it’s a load of rubbish and I still think Baines is going toffees-way.

I’d like Baines, lots of prem experience, but Shorey’s refused the contract extension sent his way so what about him? Still relatively young, got a season of prem footy under the belt and England international. Plus he’s taller than Baines so BSA can’t say no can he?

Cant see Baines signing. This is a smoke screen from Sam I think.

If the official Villareal website are wishing goodbye to Enrique, he’s clearly going to be our player.

SHOULD we not sign Drago, THEN Baines MIGHT be a real target.

I’m now more excited about who the last signing will be…

    Riquelme, Deco, Joaquin, Aquilani, Kerlon?

Ed Case – I think most likely Riquelme, he would be a massive signing and he has fallen out with his team. He wanted a move to Boca (was on loan to them last season) but they can’t afford it.

Glen Johnsen would be a really good signing RB, and Geremi can player there as cover.

This caught my eye a couple of days back when the deal was being announced..Marca seem to reckon its a good deal for Sevilla for a lad who cost €1 million Euros and who wasn’t even a regular starter. They say that although he played in the two finals at the end of last season he has never been first choice. Also interestingly they mention that his fee is €4mill plus a couple of add-ons.

From what I have seen of him I wouldn’t build my defence around him but I think he’ll be good cover. That appears to be what he’ll be. Goodness me, I cant get used to this strength in depth idea at NUFC!!

We are still severely limited in central midfield. Look at man utd, chelsea and Pool with what they have on offer. We have Jail bird joey, Emre, AOP Butt and THATS IT. Whilst you can argue that certain players can play in that position, we wont win any cups on the day, when we have to play versatile players in positions you really need class performing within. I think we need two new midfielders, a defensive modern athlete in the mould of Papa diop from Fulham, and a magician, Riquelme, Deco etc. Emre is quality, he dominates midfields on his own. He is an already footballer without the arial ability but he certainly is limited when it comes to creativity. Barton is quality, another all rounder but we need someone who can really swing it around in our favour. Someone the fans love to see running at defences, like dyer but with brain not bling. Butt is far too old now, he is severely hampered and I think he has proven nufc fans wrong and this season he will struggle more so than ever as the top 5 midfields will kill him. Milner on the right and zog or duff on the left really need through balls to run onto, similar to the robert and bernard link up. They need someone they can work with, whether it be a full back that plays balls over the top or a midfielder putting them through with one-twos. Still think we need 4 new players even if we get Drago. Remember, last season we were terribly short in numbers, and this season we have lost 10 players. So we have not made the squad bigger by any means. We need another 4 players to seriously challenge. 1 defensive midfielder (diop), 1 play maker (riq or deco), 1 central defender, 1 natural rightback. Come on, its not like we are short with money or have over spent this year.

MadridRob, I am a realistic and an optimist. But I sincerely disagree with you regarding BOTH players. Riquemle has actually spoken well of the club in the past and Deco certainly didnt trip over himself to deny himself being linked with a move to the premiership. Whilst im certain chelsea WOULD NOT go for him, as they have Ballack, Lampard, Essien, Makele, amongst others on the list, they havent got the money. He would cost around 12m. Perhaps it was closer than people actually know, but the move may have collapsed when MA dropped a brick after having seen the finances. Either way, the most important area of ANY club, is the play maker. Man utd and scholes, Chelsea and Lampard, Liverpool and Gerrard, Arsenal and Cesc, Barce and Deco, Milan and Kaka etc. The closest we have are emre and Barton. Everton have Cahill and Arteta, great partnership and for me, is where evertons strength derives from.

Yeah I certainly agree with your idea about the midfield dictating the style and success of a team. Certainly, you only have to look at Zidane and his career to see that. I’m just not confident that we could land deco or riquelme. Think Barca would need to make a pretty substantial signing to even think of letting him go (they want a squad too remember). I think we should be looking to discover rather than buy big…this is Sams forte….I would like to mention ivan de la pena…..30 years old….instrumental for espanyol..serious string puller….he ripped barca apart in the camp nou at the end of last season and does it regularly. he’s a big sam type..understated and quality. any thoughts?

i hope this is just BSA playing the transfer market and that weve already got the ball rolling… i hope.

i hope to see Baines in black and white soon.
