Just a fantastic day for Newcastle United in the transfer market yesterday when we signed two players and agreed the transfer of two others.
Big surprise last night was that Kieron Dyer’s deal with West Ham fell through at the last minute when Newcastle wanted ₤8M rather than the ₤6M the deal was based on.
Not sure why unless this is linked with the Barton news of yesterday.
- Newcastle had a phenomenal day in the transfer market signing two players (Smith and Cacapa) and agreeing deals for two others (Ivaca Dragutinovic and Jose Enrique). Total cost to Newcastle of the four deals is estimated at ₤10.5M. Smith is ₤4M, Cacapa is a free (what a deal), Drago is ₤2.5M and 21 year-old Jose is ₤4M. The article suggests this is probably a record for Newcastle – agreeing four deals in one day and completing two of them. That’s what we call speed in the transfer market – which is what Super Sam has ben asking for. Think we’ll see a much happier Sam tomorrow and a smiling Chris Mort beside him.
Alan Smith – one of two signings at the club yesterday – we think for ₤4M
- Seems like Newcastle are still not finished in the transfer market and from our calculation we think there is at least one more signing to come. Not sure who that will be – but we take a stab and say it’s Papa Diop for ₤3M from Fulham. There may be a major surprise next week after we tie up Drago and Enrique – because Sam may even have another two at the club before next Saturday’s game at Bolton. Looks like Smith and Viduka may be starting up front for Newcastle tomorrow against Sampdoria – an old Leeds striker formation – so at least they’ve played together before.
Ivica Dragutinovic – Will sign next week for ₤2.5M
- Now that Claudio Cacapa has arrived at the club we look at him as a potential Newcastle captain for this season. Certainly he has the experience from his 5 years as captain of Lyon – who won the French league almost every year he was there. Claudio has also played over 30 games in the Champions league and brings a winning mentality to the club. We think Claudio will make a good captain for the new regime under Sam. Let us know what you think.
Claudio Cacapa – Next Newcastle Club Captain?
- A real surprise last night was that the Kieron Dyer deal to West Ham United has been called off. Kieron had already passed a medical and terms had been agreed with the player. Reports suggest Newcastle stepped at the last minute and upped the price from ₤6M to ₤8M. We have no idea why this happened but do suggest 3 possible reasons. However, one of the best reasons from our readers suggests the Barton affair has made Sam nervous and he wants to keep Kieron at least until January. But if that’s the case why not say so – why raise the price by ₤2M? Take a look at the article – any ideas what’s going on?  The story put out makes no sense whatsoever.
LATE NEWS: The Hammers have revealed Ashley believes they spoke to Dyer before they had permission – something the club deny – and suddenly the fee was hiked up by £2m late yesterday afternoon. Sources in London have revealed West Ham boss Curbishley was beginning to feel uneasy about the transfer in the face of criticism from a section of Hammers fans.
Doesn’t look good for Dyer leaving – at least to West Ham.Kieron Dyer – What’s going on with his transfer?
- News today that Leighton Baines may sign for Newcastle from Wigan but we’re not sure this is not just a regurgitated story. We think we have put in a bid for Leighton (₤5m)but with the Jose Enrique deal being agreed and with Drago also able to play left back we don’t think we’ll need Baines. We think he will end up at Everton.
Leighton Baines – think he will end up at Everton
- Great interview today in the Newcastle Journal with Alan Smith. A must read for all Newcastle fans. Never realized Alan had such a great attitude – but he does – and is going to be a big favorite with the Newcastle faithful. Certainly Sam seems to think the world of him – just look at the picture below.
Sam and Smith – both seem very pleased with things
- Finally here’s some funny football quotes – to lighten up the day  😀
“As long as no-one scored, it was always going to be close.” – Arsène Wenger
“Our goalkeeper didn’t have a save to make in 90 minutes, and yet he still ended up conceding four goals.” – Joe Royle
“A lot of hard work went into this defeat.” – Malcolm Allison
Arsene Wenger – is it close when nobody scores?

Comment #42He would be OK with the giants though 😛
Who knows. It’s good that we are thinking this high though and thinking about possibilities like this. It makes a refreshing change! 😀
Robben is quality but I still don’t think he’s quite the player he was. He is very creative and a fantastic passer of the ball though. I just think we need to strengthen either right back or the right wing because we don’t have many options.

Comment #44We don’t need another RB!! AAARRRGGHHH! Shut up about the RB. We signed one a month ago. His name is Geremi he is so good he can play in midfield, has won the league twice in the last 3 yrs, as well as the African cup of nations and more silverware than any newcastle player in the last 50 yrs.
We need one of the three touted Left sided defenders to sign (Ivan Drago, Jose Enrique, Leighton Baines). Then probably someone who can score goals from midfield. NOT Dioup!
A big money move for an exciting talent would be brilliant. But not another squad player. Someone who can come into the team and improve it.

Comment #46Michael we have Carr and Geremi. That’s all we have. Are you saying Carr is good enough to challenge for the top 7? 🙁

Comment #47Curbishley says Dyer deal is off… but we’ve already bought his replacement!!!!!!!! Oh dear! Perhaps we’re giving a club £16million to get Dyer off our wage bill? Money well spent…

Comment #48Michael. You say we need someone to score goals in midfield but if I remember rightly Barton scored 8/9 goals last season and also when Geremi was at Middlesbrough he scored 11 goals. Geremi prefers to play in midfield too for your information but will play anywhere to help the team.
We need a right back and left back.

Comment #49Joel – The 16 Million bid might be made up. We are just speculating really.
It wouldn’t surprise me if they do decide to bring in a “big” name player though.

Comment #50no but geremi is. we also have edgar huntington and taylor all capable at right back. And Stephen Carr might suprise some folk this year. Gary Speed looked past it 3 yrs ago when he moved to Bolton. AND more astonishingly Michael Ricketts (yes the 28yr old striker now plying his trade at league one oldham!) became an England international under Big Samuel. And you wonder whu Luque has a new leash of life? Expect Dyer to be good if he stays!

Comment #52And although I like Barton (I think he is as good s Gerrard and Lampard, certainly the latter) and think he should be captain he may go to jail. Man Yoo have always scored more from the midfield than say Liverpool and Arsenal and that is what makes the difference at the top end. Other than JB:
Geremi may prefer to play midfield but face it, he’s been plying his trade at RB for 3 yrs now and that’s what he was signed for.
Butt might never have scored. I certainly don’t remember it.
Dyer whilst touted as an exciting player has never scored more than 5 in a season. And he’ll probably leave.
Milner has potential but is far from prolific, and needs radical education in final ball delivery.
Solano whilst a fan favourite and a hero in my own eyes is 31 and not blessed with blistering pace.
Duff is crocked, although when fit equal to the task… we think. No proof yet in a B&W shirt.
Luque has yet to prove his rebirth in competitive football.
Alan Smith has scored about 5 goals in three seasons at Man Yoo (Although his broken leg didn’t help).
Now tell me you don’t want a Christiano Ronaldo type player!

Good work on the Baines work up. I love reading four four two but never thought of checking them online.
He certainly sounds a bit red what with buying his kid a mini liverpool kit. Although Everton still have the edge really cos that means he doesn’t have to uproot his family or face a comute (Although he could always go the Robbie Fowler route and get a helicopter).

Comment #54i think that newcastle could be in for a great season and i think that we could be seeing Europe next season!!! i think a 6th or upwards finish would be great for this season and i will be a little disappointed if we dont qualify for Europe. I think Big Sam could potentially bring a trophy to this club judging by the players he has brought in even though we aren’t in Europe. Can you imagine the sorts of players we could have got if that donkey Roeder got us into Europe!!!

Comment #55Michael – Thanks. I remember reading some where that Baines was infact a Liverpool fan as a kid and I wasn’t going to stop until I found it!
I would love a Ronaldo type of player personally. So I would be more than happy with either Robben or Quaresma. It would be one of those signings that really marks the start of a new era.
Although having said that the signings we have made so far have been great. I agree with what you say about Barton, he is out Gerrard. I have always likened him to Gerrard because he can run all day and get’s some goals too. He is also very comfortable on the ball and could be great for us.
I can’t see Barton going to jail. They will probably give him a suspended sentence. Personally I don’t think Dabo should have pressed charges because it was more of a club matter than an illegal attack.
Last time I had my mouth bust open on a night out I laughed and not once did I think about pressing charges. I thought about not fighting back though because there is so many CCTV cameras around today and all it takes is one punch too many to be put away for a long time.

Comment #56Hey guys, we need some help in the middle. We’ve got so many porcelaine-player in Emre-Barton-Dyer and in front Owen-Ameobie. I don’t have anything against Nicky Butt but a guy like Stephen Appiah would be more proper. He’s got experience, leadership and drive, it would be a force in the middle – better than Diop I think.
Coloccini as a rightback would be also nice. We could use better control on the defensive flank, better ball control to go with Emre – Solano and Barton.
Imagine fullback as taented as Coloccini, argentine international – starting eleven in the last WC – and Enrique on the left side, no more air ball – read giveaway- like last year.
So long

Comment #58Michael – Good points about the right back position. Although you will hate me for this I still believe we need one! 😛
I know Taylor can play there, Carr is OK there, but Edgar and Huntington are centre backs. They play left back and right back when we don’t have a choice but playing them out of position will not let them develop to there full potential.
This is why I will still say we need a right back. Only better than Geremi. I really rate Geremi as a right back but he is so much better in midfield. He is very comfortable on the ball, creative and can score goals for us so let’s not waste him at right back. I would even consider playing Geremi on the right wing if we needed him.

Comment #61Sam is not worried one bit about Barton guys, Barton will not serve any prison time, ic ant imagine he decked him for no reason and even if he did i can see him getting a hefty fine and some community service.
The Daily Mail has an article saying it was Mike Ashley, that he was annoyed about how The Hammers conducted business by starting contract ralks with Dyer before the fee was agreed so he upped it to 8Million. sounds logical to me.
I can guarantee well sign another left back, Drago is more of a CB… i think we will get another LB have two solid LBs, four CB’s and two RB’s i think that will be:
LB – Enrique/Baines or Shorey (or another unkown)
CB’s – Capaca, Rozenhal, Taylor & Drago
RB’s Carr and Geremi or Solano
comapre that too
LB – Babayaro / Bernard
CB – Moore, Bramble & Taylor
RB – Carr / Solano
🙂

Comment #62Lets give carr a prolonged run in team.I have a feeling that sam may breath new life into him with his training methods. After all he is experienced and that is what sam is looking for at the back.In midfield i would like Diop forget about sneijder if he leaves Ajax its to go to spain .

Comment #63Thanks StevieA. Hey man, don’t you agree with me that we miss ball control – ball possession between defence and midfield last year. It stunned me when I see how many times defensive players put the ball in the air because of a lack of technique and ball control. It’s the downside of average – english – football. Compare with italian – south american and spanish football.

Comment #64Rich I agree with what you have said 100% 😀
That way we can use Geremi to his full potential which will make a bigger difference to how we do in the league I think.
Also I have a feeling Dyer will go to Man City for some reason.

Comment #65Fred – Yes our biggest problem last season was Parker and Bramble. They kept passing side ways and were just far too negative in possession. Also the back line would play long balls up to Martins and Owen (when he played) which would result in us loosing possession.
I have noticed in pre-season matches that we have been passing on the ground a lot more and this will only improve as we add more quality to the side. Totally agree with you.
Geremi makes a big difference to our midfield too because he passes quickly and well, long and short which mixes up our play from the centre midfield.

Comment #69Alex – As soon as I mentioned Man City I thought of Spurs due to the London factor. He wants to be closer to his family so down south would be the best solution but Man City could offer him the same wages as West ham so it’s possible.
He would be an expensive subsitute for us though!
