Major Newcastle News Stories – 7th August – 2007

Not too much new news today.
We have an article on Sam’s quest to capture Drago from Sevilla and it will not be easy.
We also have a sneaking suspicion that the Kieron Dyer drama will be settled before the end of the week and we even propose a compromise deal to quicken things up    😀

Good to see the club are taking care of new signing Jose Enrique – that’s just one of the things we like about Big Sam – he certainly takes good care of his players. Hey – wonder if that’s why they play so well for him – what a concept.

  • An update on a charity run by Mark Allison from John O’ Groats to Land’s End on behalf of St. Benedict’s Hospice. Mark sent me a note this morning saying he got a good laugh at the fictitious conversation between him and Big Sam in our report yesterday. But as you can see below he looks in great shape – and starting to attract the ladies we see   😀
He recieved quite good contributions yesterday (nearly ₤2K ?) so hopefully we all had something to do with that. Mark finishes this coming weekend and we’ll run this story for the rest of the week. He has now collected ₤18,127 and we admire Mark’s guts and courage greatly – he’s doing a fine fine thing and it reflects well on him and on Newcastle United – because Mark is an avid fan.
Here’s Mark’s web site where he has a daily log and all kinds of good information about his fabulous effort. It’s now day 33 (of 37 days) of his run.  If you can contribute to Mark’s efforts please do so at this just giving site

  • Just a great 4 minute video today on Peter Beardsley’s fantastic career and goals at Newcastle. Take a look and see if you are not ready for Newcastle to make a storming come-back in the league this season.

Peter Beardsley – what a great player

  • A good to read article on our new signing Jose Enrique and the effective support system Sam seems to have set up to get him comfortably settled in at Newcastle. Sam is an old master at this and it will be good to see our players taken care of. One thing to remember is that Jose is just 21 years-old so he does need some help in getting settled in. I’m sure our supporters will help him settle too – he can be our left-back for many years to come because there’s no doubt he’s an excellent player in the true Sam Allardyce mould.

  • We run a piece on Ivaca Dragutinovic and Sam Allardyce we think is in Spain trying to close the deal. Initially Drago said he would make his decision today about whether to join us but now it’s Wednesday or Thursday. We don’t believe the news that say Drago has already signed a 4 year deal with Sevilla. While it could be true there’s no official word on any deal yet. We think they are re-hashing old information from yesterday when Drago said there is a likelihood he will stay at Sevilla. Sam still has to get his shot at Ivaca and nothing is decided until that happens. Drago has to make the choice – we still hope he comes to Newcastle.

  • We have an update on the Dyer situation and have a sneaking suspicion there will be a compromise deal done before the end of the week. The clubs in reality are only about ₤1M away from a deal and we still think both clubs do want the deal. We think a compromise deal of ₤7M up front may be done – and that’s a good deal for both clubs – and good for Kieron also.

Kieron Dyer – We think he’ll sign for West Ham later this week - for £7M? – hope so

  • Finally here’s some funny football quotes – to lighten up the day 😀

“Football’s a difficult business and aren’t they prima donnas?” – The Queen

“We probably got on better with the likes of Holland, Belgium, Norway and Sweden, some of whom are not even European.” -  Jack Charlton

“It’s a game we’ve got to win. It’s also a game we’ve not got to lose” – Graham Taylor

its a shame to hear the drago aint gonna sign but we need to move on…

i read a report earlier that we had been contacted by barcelona and told we would have to cough up 15mil for Deco so maybe we could get him if MA would get the chack book out…

      loving the site Ed

I realistic terms i think we have around 7 – 10m to spend on some more players, both Mort and Big sam have mentioned no panic buys to come, where ‘taking’ our time not taken our time, would suggest we have 3 -4 more coming in! regardless of dyers sale!

as for deco 15m this would be a trophy buy in MA eyes! so he may get his money out for this on a total seperate cash basis to our 7 – 10m available!

“a signing to shock the footballing world” i swear this was thrown about 3 weeks ago, im still waiting for it! DECO???

I’m not too worried about Drago, he’s been given the chance to join us, if he turns us down it’s his loss.

I’m sure he’s a very good player, but I still think of him as a stop gap untill the real cash arrives.

We have 3 very capable cetre halfs in Taylor, Rohsenal and Cacapa. Plus the young lads Ramage , Huntingdon and Edgar as back up.

Maybe I greedy but another rightback and a back up left back would be nice.

I think playing Geremi RB would be a waste of a great looking midfielder and Carr just isn’t up to it.

We’ve been sniffing around Barcelona players for the entire pre-season, so it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that Deco has been sounded out. NUFC.com ran an article a few weeks ago stating that we had spoken to him — they’re a reputable site so I guess we’ll have to see what happens. He’s the sort of creative playmaker that we need to give assists, that’s for sure.

I hope Dragutinovic signs but even if he doesn’t, I’m sure Allardyce will be able to find a similarly-talented player to sign instead. I have full confidence in his abilities — this is something I have never been able to say about a Newcastle manager since the Keegan days. Even good ol’ Sir Bobby had a fair few failings in his management style by the time he came to Newcastle. I think Allardyce is the most comphrenesively competent manager that we have had in the modern era.

      ‘mon the toon.

With regards to Peter Beardsly it really P****es me of to remember that other teams got the best of him. If the board of the time hadn’t been such “shrewd businessmen” we could have had a brilliant team.

wen dyer leaves ithink we should possibley get 2 extre midfielders renauto augusto and if poosible kevin nolan we need another left back 1 more centre back 1 right back the left back would have to be nicky shorey or giorgio chiellini centre back would also have to be luizao or curtis davies asnd our right back though its an extremely big ask phillip lahm n also we should prepare for when the legend nobby solano eventually announces retirement with a young lad named shermasn cardenas

lee do you think we still need that amount of players??Ive we get drago he can play either centre half or left back so we’d have cover there….I agree that we need a right back…as for midfield when fit we have duff,Nzogbia,Butt,Barton,Geremi,Solano, Emre,Luque,Milner….,Dyer if he stays…with the likes off Pattison in reserve….I think we are covered there too……….So I reckon If we get Drago and a right back we should have a decent enough squad if we can keep everyone fit…

I know Cardenas, he’s a really young Colombian right winger off FM07. He’s class in the game, but probably crap in real life. Remember Anthony Le Tallec, he was amazing in FM05/FM06 but not EPL material. In FM07, Obafemi Martins isn’t even as quick as he should be (17’s for pace and accel.) but he’s blatantly the quickest player in the league!

Shows how much Football Manager knows!

Lee – Philip lahm is a left back.

As for needing a new right back, i myself have been dubious about carr in the past but he seems to be a lot fitter since Big Sam has come in and has played consistently if unspectacularly in the 5 preseason games he has been involved in. I would give him a good run now as first choice rb, if he is still not producing the standard we need after a month or so then we can look at bringing someone in in january but i think in terms of this position at least we should rely on allardyce’s ability to bring the best out of people.

Danny – picking a team and including all ther good players we now have ibn 1st eleven is not easy – but it’s a great sign about strength of squad – on some other stories today people have been picking the team – home and away teams too.

Deco good for 15M euros – but 15M pounds is a little high – but that’s only what they want – that’s what I would want too. may be able to get him for 10M piunds but Chelsea interested and he has said he’s like to play for Mourinho again. He’s 30 this Aug 27th. But a lot of years left under Big Sam’s training methods. We need someone like him to put icing on cake – and then this is the best pre-season buying by the club I can remember (hint: that’s a long time). 😀

Ed, can we have a rule about not quoting bloody football Manager games please, I’m an early 30’s guy who frequents albeit a lurker on this site among a few others. I love the stories you write (certainly beats kentuckians drivel on nufc-forums!) and I love the responses normally, but if people aren’t going to post sensibly then I’m seriously gonna have to stop reading, haven’t got time to read about teenagers and their FM games tbh.
p.s. Super Mario is a much better LB than Sonic!

Anyways, I agree that 15M is overpriced for a 30-year old. although if Dyer is worth 7M, then he should possibly be double that anyways?

Deco’s excellent but 15 Million for 4-5 years (if that) is a bit much for me.

I would prefer someone younger for this position if we get anyone at all but I am not sure we need anyone quite yet in that position personally. I think we should fully focus on getting the defence right between now and January and then buy the big name player. Ideally someone between the age of 25-28 unless it’s for quite a low fee of course.

Having said that if Deco is a present from Mr Ashley then who am I to complain!? 😛
