Dragutinovic Moves Closer to Newcastle Deal

Reports coming out of Spain yesterday suggest that Sevilla have accepted a £4M bid from Newcastle for their Serbian defender Ivica Dragutinovic.

The previous amount being quoted was less than this and quite honestly £4M seems high for a 31 year-old compared to the previous figure of £2.7M.

But perhaps it will turn out to be 4M euros – we don’t know at this point – but 4M euros translates to around £2.7M.

Sevilla’s Ivica Dragutinovic

Don’t believe several reports yesterday that said Drago had already turned down Newcastle and had signed a new 4 year contract at Sevilla. When we looked at those reports they were rehashing old news and there was nothing new. Drago himself has said he will make a decision on his future today or tomorrow and we still think that will happen.

We were wrong yesterday to suggest Sam was in Spain to do the deal. Apparently he was moving his family into their new house in Newcastle, which is why he was missing from the training ground.

But he seemed very calm about the Drago deal and was not put off by reports on the Sevilla web-site that said Drago was ready to turn down Newcastle. When asked about the Drago deal he told the Evening Chronicle:

“Hopefully we will get something done later this week.”

We are seeing a Sam Allardyce deal in progress which we find fascinating and it will be great if Sam can pull this one off. We hope Sam can do the deal because it looks like Drago is exactly the type of defender he is looking for – and of course he has lots of experience in Europe over the last two years with Sevilla.

We’ll just have to wait and see what happens – but it shouldn’t be too much longer before we all know for sure.

Comments very welcome.

Most reports from Spain seem to think that he is staying in Spain. We’ll have to wait and see.

hey ed! did you see on the icnewcastle website yet? they have a quote from drago that says (i’m paraphrasing): “My family and I have enjoyed very much these two extraordinary years with Seville and now, in addition, I want to play in the Champions League. We have still got a few things to discuss and will make an announcement on Thursday or Friday.”
sounds to me (of course deferring to you if you’ve already heard this and still think he’s coming) like he’s not coming 🙁

Agree with Joe, but who knows, its a big money move for him which should be tempting for a 31 year old.

I think it’s more likely that he will come unless his wife etc are dead against it, he’s 31 and probably has 3 years left at the top end of the game. This will probably be his last chance to earn big bucks, if Sam has sold the dream of what he is building i.e. we should defo be in at least UEFA with a good chance of Champs league he’d be mad to turn it down. Seville can’t pay anything like the wages we are offering.
Am in NY at the weekend – anyone know of any bars there that’ll be showing the Bolton game?

At an age of 31, I think Drago will sign for Newcastle. It represents good economical-common sense at his age….

At least I hope so, as BSA is building a terrific squad with so much experience, youth, flair, etc.

He’ll be making a big mistake if he does not join the toon…he’s 31 and as he gets older his chance of getting a decent move will recede…….
I’m sure if has wife has anything to do with it they’ll be moving….treble your wage and Metro Centre in the same sentence???
What time does the next plane to Newcastle leave?

Supposedly the board said they wanted deco in black and white this season..so why not go and buy him?15million will hardly dent ashleys fat wedge he probably makes that much in interest in a few days !
I would like them to buy some or at least one superstar that would be icing on the toon cake as well as a hardman like drago.

There is no way Deco will join us (offcourse i would like to be proved wrong).

He himself stated in an interview that he’s staying at Barca, and he is an important player there.
Also as i know Newcastle and Chelsea are interested in him………where do u think he would go ??? 🙂 ,he sad that would he leave Barca he would like to work with former coach Mourinho …

It is impossible to tempt an international quality player who has been playing champions league football for years to NUFC at the moment!

Especially when Chelsea are our competition and Deco has a great relationship with Mourinho.

    Wake up people!

why would Deco want to go from Barca, as a squad player, to CFC, to be a …SQUAD PLAYER! he could end his career at nearly any other club as a key factor! dont think he will come to us, purely on the fact that we are not playing CL. it would be nice, but lets face it, right now its a bit of a pipe dream! (Prove me wrong Deco…PLEASE)

Lampard isnt exactly firing on all cylinders and I think his contract demands are ridiculous, Deco could fit well into the Chelsea side and is a more creative player than Frank.

Drago has not signed a new 4 year deal, at least it has not been confirmed officially by Sevilla, which means on our side it hasnt happened.

why do we need deco? we allready have more then 10 midfielders… we only need 1 more player… the only player we should try to get from barca is zambrotta (DRL…and also MLR)… we need a right back, who can also play on the left…so he’s perfect…

Whilst the official website in Spain hasn’t confirmed it yet, most of the Spanish press seem to be convinced that the 4 year extension was signed yesterday…as stated the other day, it appears we have been used simply as leverage. It wouldn’t be the first time a player/agent has done this and it won’t be the last…right now I think there’s more chance of Dragutinovic signed for Dynamo Zagreb!!!

Don’t forget that this player also turned down an offer from AS Roma, can’t see what would bring him to us other than ludicrous sums of money, but I don’t see us being that desperate to land him.

Nightfall, totally agree with Zambrotta, he oozes quality, unfortunately for us, we have absolutely nothing to offer him!

Zambrotta would be a lovely signing. He can play as a winger, wing-back or full back on either side of the pitch. I think he may be tempted if we offered him a contract, but he would have to know if he joins us would he still be in for an italian call-up.

Drago has used NUFC as a patsy to get a better deal from his current employers. His choice, from what I heard/read he was looking to become the No.1 earner at the toon.

    He’s not that good.

    as for Zambrotta……if only 🙂

Pay 10million for Zambrotta any day.
