Sam Still to Pick New Captain at Newcastle

Still no word from Sam Allardyce on who will be his captain at Newcastle for the coming season.

Geremi has captained Newcastle for the last two pre-season friendlies but Sam has not really hinted at all who his choice will be.

There are a few players now who would make good choices – let’s take a look.

Geremi – new Newcastle Captain?

The candidates had been Given, Taylor, Butt, Owen, Geremi and even Cacapa who has just joined the club. Cacapa will not be ready to play at Bolton so it will be interesting to see when Sam announces his choice. Geremi’s attitude and form have been so good since he joined the club it wouldn’t surprise us at all if he was announced as the new captain.

Alan Smith could even make a good future captain, given his immediate commitment to the Newcastle cause and his obvious strong relationship with both Sam and the fans. Alan has been a joy since he has arrived at the club. We never knew his attitude was so good but maybe that’s what happens when you play under Sir Alex Ferguson who always had good things to say about him.

Obviously, the captain has to be someone who will play almost every game so Geremi would be a good choice there. But Cacapa is also a candidate with his experience in Europe and his winning attitude and experience at Lyon. However, just which two central defenders will be Sam’s choice is not known. He has Steven Taylor, David Rozehnal and Claudio Cacapa to choose from – best of luck Sam.

So for us it’s between Cacapa and Geremi but we now think Geremi has to be the favorite.

What do you think?

Let us know – comments always welcome.

Generally Cacapa would be my first choice simply becasue of the winning captincy he held at Lyon for 5 years. I suppose Geremi has Prem experience but I’d stil go for the Brazillian. However, for Bolton I think Geremi but that’s because Cacapa won’t start. I’d like to see him [Cacapa] take the arm band as a sub.

We have a few players who have the quality to Captain the side, if not now then sometime in the season (as stand in) or the next couple of years. Alan Smith could, as he matures, become a very influential captain indeed. We know Owen wants it and I bet Taylor has it in his sights for a few years time.

It’s all good really and difficult decissions will have to be made!

No captain yet , im not surprised actually about that. The upheaval has been so great, that something was bound to be forgot about, in this case not intentionally, but more a problematic because of changes in staff.
Looking at who we have there are a number who could fit the bill.
1, Solano. Used to captain his country, but a bit quiet for me.
2, Given. Dont think this works a captain between the sticks. A great club captain though.
3, Nicky Butt. Why not. Leads by example. Could be a outsider.
4, Geremi. Unknown quantity to me, but my pals who have seen him wax lyrical about his command on the pitch.
5, Michael Owen. Not one for me. He seems to be too quiet on pitch, plus you have to be on pitch.
For me its between Butt and Geremi.

Dave I agree with you re. Geremi and Capaca. I see taylor as becoming another John Terry and a future captain in the Bobby Moncur mould.

Geremi is the likely candidate as captain as he’ll hopefully start more games than Cacapa.

Additionally, not sure how good Cacapa’s English is, so expect him to miss out at this time.

Taylor will be groomed as a future Newcastle captain although I expect big things from Joey Barton as BSA waves his magic wand!

I think cacapa or geremi have not really deserved it to be captain for newcastle yet since they just joined the toon. i think taylor has proved himself to be newcastle`s next captain since he had some fantastic games for us and he has the quality to lead a big club like the toon!!!

Has to be Geremi – played at Real Madrid, has the experience at top level, has been the only one publicly declaring his interest and is a fabulous player on the pitch.

ive said geremi since i first saw him play for us, he commands the midfield and given the captaincy he would do the same to the whole team.

He seems a cracking fella and an amazing footballer aswell.

Id give Emre the captaincy if he was back to his best and stayed fit 🙂

Rozehnal or Taylor would be my realistic choice.

Surely Taylor should be captain, i agree that he my be too young but look at tony adams, he was captain young for arsenal and turned out as one of the top defenders around, as for geremi as captain, i wouldn judge him too soon he’s only played preseason, wait till we’ve had a few prem matches b4 judgin him, i wouldn make him captain he’s too new to the team we need a player whoz already with the toon whoz not new to the team, Butt, Solano, Taylor, Given(i no hes a keeper but he could be a exception and be great for us) i’d be disappointed if geremi or cacapa or even rozenhal were made captain, we need a toon whoz already thru and thru, not 1 who WILL BE good for us.

I dont care that Geremi and Cacapa have not “deserved” it because they have not played for the Toon yet. That is a silly reason. Both come from organizations that have far better winning ways than Newcastle as of late and have seen what it takes to win. Thats what I care about. If it went to the longest serving player for the Toon (leaving Shay out of this) it would be Dyer or Ameobi…now who wants that? Whomever will be taking the captain spot will just be keeping it warm (while showing the ropes) to Taylor as he will most likely take over in a year or two…but give the lad some time to progress rather than have to worry about the whole team first. Cacapa as qualified as he may be, cant really speak much English yet….

I say Geremi for these reasons…

He will be aquainted personally on the pitch with all three layers…sometimes playing right back…sometimes midfield…and as I would imagine would be taking alot of free kicks which would make him have to work well with the strikers…

Also he has been on some championship teams…with Real Madrid, Chelsea, and winning the Gold medal in the 2000 Olympics with Cameroon. So he has done it with club and country. (yes the Olympics isnt the world cup…but its more than England has won in the last few decades).

But dont sell anyone short because they are new arrivals…No one on the team last year was particularly a better candidate than Parker and I would not hand him the armband over Geremi, who seems much more excited about his opportunity at Newcastle.

Keep oba – longest serving player is currently steve harper actually but thats besides the point i never said geremi wouldn be a good captain i just think a player should play great with the team and really organise and shine to me looking at the matches he captained he never shone, he looked quiet at times. As for being with championship teams i watched him playing for real madrid and he was as good for them as he was for chelsea and that aint good, he mite have shone for sum ppl this preseason but he captained against hull and sampdora and last time i checked we lost to hull. im not sayin geremi wont b a gd buy for us but i think we should wait a few weeks before we judge him. i never saw geremi as a great player and i dont c whats changed; he let a great team and a great manager to come to a growing team with a great manager and to b honest who wouldn b happy about comin to the toon :D. The captain needs to b a consistently good player with a gd understanding of the game and team he’s playin with and the only players that fit that are milner, solano, butt, taylor and as butt and solano arent likely to hold first team places then that leaves milner and taylor. milner isnt captain material so that leaves taylor, i no he young but look at players that captain young they all turn out to be great players, the top at what they do. Tony Adams any1?
