Sam Allardyce has hit a problem with trying to bring in PSG defender Mario Yepes.
The Newcastle boss has identified Yepes – nicknamed Super Mario – as another defender he would like to bring in before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.
As always Sam is looking for a good deal and over the weekend the transfer fee was quoted as ₤1.7M. However, the Evening Chronicle is revealing that Sam wants to sign Yepes on a free transfer. PSG on the other hand value him at ₤2M. and apparently Yepes is not too keen on coming to Tyneside so that Newcastle’s medical team can run the rule over him and his fitness.
PSG’s Columbian center-back Mario Yepes – Super Mario
Sam seems very likely to be able to bring Brazilian Edmilson to the club in January who would come for a fairly low price tag – given that his contract at Barcelona runs out next June so Sam has some leverage on forcing a good deal for Yepes. If he doesn’t want to come – so be it – we only want players here who want to come and play under Big Sam’s big revolution. Some playing information on Yepes:
Mario Alberto Yepes DÃaz (born January, 1976 in Cali) is a 6’1″ Colombian footballer, currently playing in central defense with PSG. Mario Yepes started his career with Cortulua, and was a forward before Cortulua (59 games and 4 goals) converted him to a center back. He transferred to Deportivo Cali (61 games 7 goals) from Cortulua in 1998. He won two Colombian championships with Deportivo Cali and then in 1999, he joined CA River Plate, Argentina (79 games and 7 goals) , where he became well known and won two Argentinian championships.
Mario signed for FC Nantes (73 games and 2 goals) in January 2002 where his nickname was “El Rey†– “The Kingâ€. He became an outstanding central defender in the French League and joined PSG (88 games and 8 goals) – when his nickname changed to “Super Mario”. He is currently said to be the most highly paid Ligue 1 player, earning the equivalent of 250K euros per month. That translates to about ₤2M/year or about ₤40K/week – which wouldn’t be a problem to Newcastle. Mario Yepes also plays for the Colombian national team (35 games – 1 goal) and won the Copa America with them in 2001.
We think Mario would be a good buy for Newcastle and add lots of competition to the central defense – but with Edmilson very likely arriving in January – and Newcastle already having center-backs Taylor, Rozehnal and Cacapa – will this be overkill?
Let us know what you think – comments very welcome.

Comment #41Talking about games. On fifa it had Oba as right footed. How stupid do they have to be to not even get the players foot right. All they need to do is look on google.
Riquleme, Kompany and a Micah Richards wwould be the best news this year. O well can always dream about them playing for the toon.

Comment #43He would be a great signing. 31 is not too old as long as you are fit and well. Most footballers live a good lifestyle now so you will see more players playing to 34/35 than previous years.
He would be great for 2 or 3 seasons. He would be adaptable too and can play anywhere across the back line.
As for the fitness thing I don’t believe a word of it. More paper rubbish.
