Milner Nears Under-21 Record – Taylor New Captain?

James Milner is expected to equal the record for England Under-21 caps when Stuart Pearce’s England youngsters take on Romania in Bristol next week.

Milner is just one cap behind Scott Carson, the Liverpool keeper who is now on-loan to Aston Villa and likely to make his debut on Saturday night against Newcastle.

Scott has 29 caps in all and is now too old for the European Under-21 Championships.

Steven Taylor and James Milner – Newcastle’s England Under-21 Stars

This is what James had to say about playing for the England Under-21 team:

“It’s great to represent your country at any level and to have as many caps as I have.”

“The aim for all of us in the under-21s is to use it as a stepping stone to get in the full squad.”

“If you do make it, it makes the transition that much easier.”

Stuart Pearce names his squad tomorrow for the Romania friendly and it will be interesting to see if young Steven Taylor is also included in the squad. Steven may be kept back for possible inclusion in the full England squad due to play Germany next Wednesday in a friendly.

Steve McClaren will name his squad for the Germany game this Friday. The Euro 2008 qualifiers are against Israel on Saturday, 8th September and Russia on the following Wednesday, 12th September. The Euro 2009 Under-21 qualifiers start next month with a trip to Montenegro and Bulgaria.

Steven Taylor has been widely tipped to be named as the new England Under-21 captain after hugely impressing in the summer, but his inclusion depends on whether he will be needed by the seniors. We would expect both James and Steven to be named in the Under-21 squad tomorrow with Taylor named as the new captain.

But it would be nice for Steven to get a taste of the full England squad and he certainly did his chances no harm at all with his display at Bolton last Saturday. We’ll know if he’s made the full squad by the end of the week – and we would expect Michael Owen and Kieron Dyer to both be included.

Comments very welcome.

After Taylor’s performance in the Euro Championships he deserves the captaincy – he looks a born leader

Personally I think Milner will take Dyers place in the full squad after the Euro Championships.

I can see Milner being brought into the full squad this season, mainly because of his ability to play on the left.

loads of reporters have been banging on about giving david bentley a chance for the full team, but frankly, milner would get the nod ahead of him anyday, imo.
