Two More Defenders and Newcastle RearGuard Strong

Sam has overhauled the Newcastle defense during the summer bringing in Geremi, Rozehnal, Cacapa and Jose Enrique to play in the back four but it now appears Sam will use new captain Geremi in a midfield role.

We now need one more center-back and a right-back so let’s see who we think Sam’s after.

We think he’s very close to completing his defensive signings, at least for August, and we expect other players will arrive in January.

abdoulayefaye2.jpgphil-neville.jpgjuliano_belletti_12sept2006.jpg

We think Abdoulaye Faye is coming, and either Neville or Belletti for right-back.

If we assume that Geremi will not play in defense then Sam has brought in three good defenders in Rozehnal, Cacapa and Enrique. All we need now for a new back four is a right-back – which is out biggest need right now. It looks like for the defense, Sam wants one more center-back and a right-back.

We are very close to bringing in Abdoulaye Faye of Bolton and judging by the notes from Bolton fans it’s going to be a good signing for Newcastle. At ₤2M the price is also decent although reports suggest Sam wants to lower that price. The Bolton Evening News is reporting that it’s almost a certainty Faye will move to Newcastle and he was left out of the Bolton side that played at Fulham last night. Interest in Ivaca Dragutinovic of Sevilla has ended and interest will also end with Yepes of PSG, once Faye is signed. We think only one additional central defender is needed in August.

Sam said a few days ago that Newcastle will be well positioned to get Brazilian Edmilson in January from Barcelona. Sam is already talking about being after players he may not get in August but in January. It looks to us that he may have already agreed a deal with Edmilson for January – but of course Sam would never divulge that. Since Edmilson is out injured until November it would seem sensible to wait until January to ensure he’s OK – and that seems the right thing to do.

As far as right-back goes, two players have been mentioned. Allardyce is said to be confident he can persuade right-back Juliano Belletti of Barcelona to join us for around ₤3M – which seems high – but the Brazilian has class and experience and at 31 years old, is not that old for a Sam Allardyce signing.

The other player linked to us is Phil Neville, the Everton captain, who can play right back and is also very versatile – so we believe he would be the better buy between the two.

So expect Faye to be at Newcastle in the next day or two and then Belletti or Neville would be the betting choice to fill the right-back position, which is our weak link in an otherwise strong defense. It also has much more strength in depth than last season. Once we sign a right-back it would not surprise us if Steven Carr wants to leave Newcastle – he is in the last year of his contract this season.

Let’s know what you think on these potential moves – comments always welcome.

if we have Rozenhal, Taylor, Cacapa and Ramage as well as young Huntington, why is there a need to waste money on faye?? i dont understand that unless we see an exit of those players above? could ramage be sold? but the only thing i would like to see is a right back and maybe glen johnson would be an asset with the immenent arrive of alves at chelsea and i think johnson is a good young player! what do u lot think of glen johnson?

glen johnson is a decent player and if alves comes into the team, he will start and then ferriera will get second choice because mourinho rates ferriera higher then johnson. so johnson would be 3rd choice for right back and i think big sam could get him for 3-4 million.

If we bring in all the defensive players we want, Huntington and Edgar could well go out on loan. Regular games is what they need, else they’ll just turn out like Ramage.

I would like to see beletti at st james parkand think his attcking qualities could cause problems down the wings and if the ‘Bull’ (Jose Enrique) plays on the left that would be another good option. Can’t see p.neville coming but i think steven taylor will become and quality reliable defender by end of season hu could look for an england cap.

i wonder if big sam is going to go for a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3 like on saturday? owen is defineatly on the bench and it looks like martins and viduka up front again cant really see ameobi being part of the 16 so i think this will be the team: Harper, Carr, Taylor, Rozenhal, Enrique, Geremi, Butt, Smith, Milner, Martins and Viduka. subs: Forster, Owen, Cacapa, N’Zogbia and Ramage

Ramage and Huntington are not good enough , Neville is not worth 4 mil , feel we would be better of bring another midfielder , play Geremi at right bk and find a right bk young player for further like Jose for left.

From what I’ve seen this season and in previous season Glen Johnson is decent going forward but dreadful in defence, infact I don’t think I’ve seen him make a tackle.

Sell car get Hatem Trabelsi (as cover) and another RB and that would cover that position.

I think we should bring in Neville AND Belletti… as well as Faye! That way our defense would be as follows:

    LB: Neville and Enrique
    RB: Belletti and Ramage
    CB: Taylor, Rozenhal, Cacapa, Faye

    – this would allow us to let Carr and Babayaro go… both are pants. The price of Faye, Belletti and Neville would be covered by the sales of Dyer and Solano. It would allow us to push Zoggy into midfield which means we would not NEED to sign a midfielder, although if one became available BS could go for him…

Jesper – good points – that could well happen. Neville is like Smith and very versatile – so he could play any full back position and any midfield position. Also N’Zogbia has looked great and hopefully Sam will use him somewhere each game. With Dyer and Solano looking to leave it opens up the left wing for Zoggy. In central midfiled he was outstanding against Juventus – and so fit. He looks better than ever right now – a great young player – one of our favorites.

    1. Belletti is better than Neville
    2. Neville wont leave Everton
    3. After we get a CB & RB we really need a Dyer-esc player as our right/centre midfield is weak only Milner maybe Geremi as Solano will probably leave. I would love us to sign a play-maker like the class act Elano is a City. Riquelme etc
    4. Edmilson will play CM not CB for us he is miles better there, but obviously provides 2 options.

Chelski wont be letting go of Ferriera since Carvalho pulled something yesterday against Reading. Him and Terry could be out for a few games. Glen Johnson is a mostly worthless defender…got schooled by Birmingham on Sunday, but I doubt they will want to get rid of him now with the injuries they have in defense.

Rich – probably – but we should go for both players – because Neville can play in many different positions – got to admit i like him – think he’s way under-rated – he’s played very well for Everton and his commitment is beyond question. Another ex ManU player – maybe in next year or two we can get more of them over here.

I agree with Andy B and Magpie Rich, Johnson is not reliable on defense. Coloccini, in Real Zaratogo (I think!), would be a great addition. Skills, good in the air and can play CBT or RB. I would cost though. Around 8 millions probably. I can’t wait to see Enrique play. Personnaly, I don’t think Ramage got the stuff of a starter on a team who has great expectations as the Magpies. So far, great job Sam! A new coach is like a new team – it’s a new challenge, and with experience all over, players won’t try to do too much so I believe the yougsters will get better.
Imagine the difference for a guy like Taylor to play with Rozenhal instead of Ramage. He can stay in his game with Rozenhal because he trust him and learn from him.
Getting the better of your players in the biggest quality for a manager. But you need experience players around to do so. Sam knows it and Roeder didn’t have a clue.

Neville is crud!! more interested in belletti anyways. Belletti’s shown he can score goals, even on the big stage. Neville was horrible for man u and everton, belletti is cheaper and better. belletti is a year older but 1 million pounds cheaper. 3m is maybe too high for a 31 year old but BSA is a great man who can get the best out of old players. (meaning at least 15 years older than me:))

    Here is my opinio on the mentionned players;

    – Glen Johnson: bad player, overrated, if he plays Chelski has got to be careful cause he can cause goals for the opponents

    – Belletti: far better than Neville. Class player who proved in the past that he can fit in the best team of Europe. Since when is 31 old??

    – Neville; don’t like them at all. He is IMO overrated and let him stay at Everton. BTW Belletti is cheaper and much better than him.

    – Cicinho; Brazilian, not bad, but I think his attacking is better than his defensive play

    – Faye; was not that good last Saturday, but on the other hand NUFC was superb, especially the first half.

    – Shorey; young ant talented, but we now more need a RB and some players to replace Dyer and Solano if they leave.
