Major Newcastle News Stories – 18th August – 2007

Most of the news today is concentrated on our important game with Aston Villa this evening.

With everything going very well last week it’s going to be important that the lads come out all guns blazing again in the first half – and keep the intensity up all through the game. We’ll just have to hope that Aston Villa cannot keep up the pace – and another win would be fantastic.

Also, those at the game tonight please give an extra shout for Mark Allison when he does his lap of honor around St. James’ Park. It’s now going to be at half-time – so we should be well ahead by then. Mark has raised just over £25,000 for Charity – St. Benedict’s Hospice specifically, with his magnificent 874 miles run from John O’Groats to Land’s End.

This is the last day we’ll be reporting on Mark – at least until he takes up his next challenge – if you take a look at his web-site you can see he’s does a lot of challenges for charity – really good guy.

Mark has shown true Geordie grit and determination and we’re very proud of him!

Nobby Solano is trying to arrange a football game between Peru and England, the proceeds of which would goto help the people desperately suffering from the earthquake last Wednesday. We think this is a great gesture and we think reflects so well on Nobby and the club. We are all for this and expect England to arrange a date for the match. The situation in Peru is just terrible and our hearts go out to them. Here’s Nobby – using his football fame – to do something good in the world – and we applaud him for his efforts. If he comes on in today’s match make sure we give him that extra bit of applause for this wonderful gesture.

  • Great interview in the Sun today with Oba Martins. Turns out Oba is very happy at Newcastle now and seems to love playing for Big Sam. He says he wants to commit long term to Newcastle and talks are going on with the club for a 5 or 6 year contract with the brilliant Nigerian striker. This is what lots of fans wanted to hear. The interview reflects well on Oba, very well on Sam and the club. Oba says he also loves the city of Newcastle – where he currently is buying a house. Oba can be a real world star and who better to achieve that with than Newcastle United 😀

Oba Martins– loves playing at Newcastle under Big Sam – it looks like it!

  • A good interview with Steven Taylor today in which he talks about Newcastle’s defense. Steven has been called up for the friendly against Germany next Wednesday and we think it’s a certainty he will make his debut for England in that game. Probably as a sub – but don’t be surprised if he starts the game after impressing Steve McClaren in training. Steve is a huge admirer of Taylor – not only for his play but for his courageous attitude and personality – which was on show during the European Under-21 tournament in June. Steven wants to keep a clean sheet against Villa today – and that would be very welcome. Turns out that McClaren will be at the game.

Steven Taylor – will probably make England debut against Germany – wants clean sheet against Aston Villa today

  • Another good interview with Sam today where he talks about how fear droves him on and specifically fear of the sack. Sam says a lot of managers are motivated by this – and he’s no exception. If the truth was known a lot of us are driven by fear but we also know that Sam has made an excellent start to his career at Newcastle and is already well liked by the fans. A good season and it’ll quickly get to hero worship. But Sam’s as motivated to be successful at Newcastle than ever – and he knows this is his BIG chance to lead a team – not only to potential Premiership honors but also to success in Europe. We couldn’t imagine how he could have done better in his first 3 months here – and we think he’s the perfect manager for the club – a Big Man with a big personality for a very big club. A win today is vital to maintain the upbeat spirit that surrounds the club.

Allardyce – driven on by fear – Newcastle is Sam’s big chance to hit the big time – and he knows it

  • A good interview today with Michael Owen in which he says again that he’s 100% committed to Newcastle United. A lot of Michael says seems to ring true – but we still wonder why he let all that stuff in the summer about him leaving go on. But then again we guess when you are as famous as Michael – these rumors will always happen and to keep denying them probably sets a bad precedent. Anyway – we look for a goal from Michael today – and a win – and the good feelings with Newcastle fans will be maintained for another week or two – at least.

Michael Owen – still not match fit but will get games for England that should help

  • An update on Mark Allison’s historic run from John O’ Groats to Land’s End on behalf of St. Benedict’s Hospice. Here’s Mark’s web site and if you can contribute to Mark’s efforts please do so at this just giving site. The fund is just gone over £25,000.
Mark will be featured in the match program on Saturday evening and he’ll be at St. James’ Park on Saturday for a lap of honor – it’s at half time – so we should be comfortably ahead by then.

  • Finally here’s some funny football quotes – to lighten up the day 😀

“Up until the second goal went in – which was offside – there was nothing in the game.” – Graeme Souness

“Without picking out anyone in particular, I thought Mark Wright was tremendous.” – Graeme Souness

“There’s a snap about Liverpool that just isn’t there.” – Ron Atkinson

“Beckenbauer has really gambled all his eggs.” – Ron Atkinson

Yes we are, but it obvious it’s not Bolton were playing.

Owen’s warming up though. I think he’ll start the second half. (and score 😉 )

Tight game so far. Both sides have had a couple of good chances each but villa look dangerous on the break with their pace.

Agree, Agbonlahor is good he’s good good pace, and Carew is dangerous too, plus they are closing Martins down well.

Let’s see if Owen comes on.

Very even game so far. Villa was best the first 15min, then we got more into the game, and got Viduka’s and Rozy’s chances. I think we’ll come out guns blazing in the second half, and hopefully get a goal or two. Maybe even see Owen on the pitch 🙂

A terrible match and leaves us in no doubt that we need to add a bit more quality to the squad. Villas goalkeeper had what 1 save during the match…not good enough.??????????

Work rate was good, happy with the clean sheet. When we get emre and barton back we will win those type of games by 2 or 3 goals easily. Need a new RB, Carr wasnt to back but not good enough to start every game.

TOM TOON….am happy with the clean sheet but only one real shot in 90 mins…..agree that with barton and emre back we will improve but so must the goal attempts!!!!!!!!!!!
