David Rozehnal – great shot brings wonderful save from Carson

Newcastle United: Harper, Carr, Rozehnal, Martins, N’Zogbia, Milner, Smith, Geremi, Butt, Taylor, Viduka. Subs: Cacapa, Owen, Ameobi, Ramage, Forster.

Aston Villa: Carson, Bouma, Mellberg, Laursen, Barry, Young, Carew, Agbonlahor, Petrov, Reo-Coker, Gardner. Subs: Moore, Harewood, Taylor, Cahill, Maloney.

Sam Allardyce chose an unchanged side from last week and Owen and Cacapa were on the substitutes bench. Newcastle will play in an attacking 4-3-3 formation as they did last week at the Reebok. Aston Villa introduced Scott Carson in goal, their loan signing for the season from Liverpool.

Newcastle United: Harper, Carr, Rozehnal, Martins, N’Zogbia, Milner, Smith, Geremi, Butt, Taylor, Viduka. Subs: Cacapa, Owen, Ameobi, Ramage, Forster.

Aston Villa: Carson, Bouma, Mellberg, Laursen, Barry, Young, Carew, Agbonlahor, Petrov, Reo-Coker, Gardner. Subs: Moore, Harewood, Taylor, Cahill, Maloney.

Referee: Howard Web

The game kicked off and Aston Villa started well putting pressure on the the Newcastle defense from the start. Obviously O’Neil had seen the game last week at Bolton and was all ready for a quick Newcastle start. There were a couple of breaks down Villa’s left wing by Ashley Young and he had the beating of Carr for pace. It looked like Villa were targeting Newcastle’s right flank as the weakness.

Then from a corner Laursen got in a free header and Harper made an excellent stop as the ball hit the keeper’s chest and was cleared. This was a lucky escape by Newcastle and bad marking at the corner. N’Zogbia was making some penetrating runs down the left but invariably his final ball was never telling enough. Charles is looking very comfortable at left back.

There seems to be too much room being left on Newcastle’s right side and Villa are making good use of this space – trying to play in Young continually. Aston Villa are looking the better team after the first 20 minutes but the Newcastle defense are holding while being put under pressure.

A beautiful ball from Viduka split the Villa defense wide open and Milner runs onto the ball but his cross is blocked for a corner. After 30 minutes Agbonlahor should really have scored for Aston Villa when he runs through on the right. He gets a lucky bounce and is straight through on Harper. With Reo Coker completely free inside him the winger shoot wide to the right. This is the best chance so far and Villa should really have gone ahead.

Viduka is having a rare battle with Laursen but is continually being whistled against by referee Web to the crowd’s displeasure.

Villa up to this point have been winning most of the 50—50 balls but as the first half draws to a close Newcastle are coming back into the game.
From a free kick the ball is loose to Rozehnal on the left about 15 yards from goal and the center-back puts a bullet left foot shot to Carson’s right but the young keeper brings off a wonderful save.

Then Viduka gets a header in from a cross and ball ball is header down and it bounces over the cross-bar. That’s the nearest Newcastle have come to scoring. The midfield of Newcastle are fighting hard to get back in the game and Geremi, Smith and Butt are trying hard to get Newcastle back into the game after Villa have been the better side in the first half.

Aston Villa have played surprisingly well in the first half and the game is delicately positioned – it will take a fighting performance from Newcastle to win this game.

    Terrible game, Newcastle were awful.

How many times does it need to be said – we are not creative enough.
We dont need Butt in midfield as well as Geremi and Smith – we desperately need Emre back and a new player, like Riquelme.

However, brilliant to see us keep a clean sheet, though it might have been different, Taylor and N’Zogbia making one or two needless mistakes and getting caught out of position and at times in possession.
Rozenhal looks great and for once, Carr was sound.

We are in big need of creativity…

Oh, and what’s it now, 6 MONTHS since the last home goal for us?

i ahve to say that is the WROST refeering i have seen since Graham POll gave that guy 3 yellow cards at WC 2006.

Mike Webber should be fined for his absolutely dismal performance.

Why didnt we put on Solano?? i dont understand, all we needed was a wide right player to compliment the 4-4-2.

for the first time i think Sam made a mistake, he should of put on Solano for Viduka and moved SMith upfront with Owen. and we would of had a solid 4-4-2 formation.

im back on planet earth now. :-(.

Damn it, i’m dissapointed. We defended well but couldn’t create anything.
Both games so far showed our weak spots. Bolton showed we need a RB and this one showed we need a creative midfielder. Sam had no one on the bench who could add something new, except Owen but he needs a few more games.

All in all we got 1 point, it was a solid performance.
Things will be much better when Owen gets a few games and Emre returns to give those all important passes.

Lets get a few more players in, gel a little and win that damn tittle 😛
PS : I’m still dissapointed though.

@Rich: Solano wasn’t in the squad, he’s leaving for sure now :(.

And yes i agree, Geremi was weak today and i never really rated Butt, but he was crap today too. Smith was the best in midfield. When Emre and Barton return we can drop Butt to the bench and maybe Geremi to RB (if we don’t get a new one) and with Smith as the holding CM and Barton with Emre things will look much more brighter (read creative 😉 )

Defense was ok…everyone else was pretty average except Milner who was on both ends and both sides of the pitch taking on two people it seemed. Glad we didn’t lose Milner to Villa a while back, that would have been disturbing. would have like to have seen Rozy score his first at home though. Oh well…on to Boro next week.

toonoholic wtf are you talking about geremi was solid and put a few decent balls in across the box, however having butt and geremi on the pitch seemed pointless. emre, solano or barton in the team would have won us that game it seems…

this performance showed us alot, we need a RB big time, Capaca is needed to play, midfield wise But was ok as Smith. Geremi underperformed and Milner was great as usual. Viduka looked reallty out of sorts and we seemwd to be always 2nd to the ball when villa was defending. We were solid give or take a couple of drops ion concentraion.
Im glad im not in charge of the toon today as i would be expecting a huge fine and to be sat in the stands for most of the season this is because the ref was disturbingly anti-give a foul against villa. Some of those tackle Butt and Smith were going infor were fantastic but he was giving fouls against them.

i think Geremi, Viduka & Martins played poor but Mike Webber played even worse.

Solano wasnt even in the squad/? i thought he was :-(…. in my mind we need a:

RB, and RW (if Solano is going) possibly a CM.

I agree with gordon solid performance. But midfield should have had a bit more creativity.Emre for the last 15 minutes maybe would have helped.Still, a clean sheet and a beter start than last term.2 games 4points.

@toonaholic: Butt was crap, he did make a few good tackles but then gave a way the ball with a long pass that never reached the target. He’s over it, he’s not first team material.

@Rich : Viduka was good, he was a handfull every time he touched the ball. And Martins was either poor or closed down really well, i think it was the latter.

Huggy – you seem abit down in the dumps there mate and you must of had some of our strong ale as you could clearly see our team is one that is going to get stronger as the season continues. we did lack a few ideas we are stuck (for the moment) with a dodgy RB but the Toon is on the up lets see where you lot are at the end of the season! Congratulations anyway you got a point…..
………………..its alot more than alot of teams will get here this season!!!!!!
Ill look forward to May when we are looking down on you!

i am a die hard newcastle fan and im thrilled with big sam overall, his signings have been good mainly and he has the respect of the dressing room… but i am concerned at this 433 malarky thats just not working, it doesnt suit oba and it certainly wont suit owen…… also geremi, well not only do i think he was wrong choice for captain but also i dont know about anyone else but personally i dont think i have seen him play well once in a black and white shirt, i know its early days yet but he appears to give up easily and im not impressed… when fit barton, given or even tayls should be given arm band. what do you guys think?
