Newcastle After Another Top Class Keeper

It’s a worrying time for Shay Given right now. After his terrible bowel injury at West Ham last year Shay has been continually hit with groin problems.

Sam Allardyce is getting concerned and he wants to bring in another goalkeeper and the ones he is targeting don’t look to be second string.

Shay Given – worries about his constant groin injuries

Big Sam is also determined to keep Shay sidelined until he is 100% fit again in both mind and body.

Given has made only 18 league outings since rupturing his bowel in a horror collision with Marlon Harewood almost 11 months ago.

Sam talked about Shay to the Sunday Sun today:

“I hope it’s not psychological with Shay now, but it is bound to be,”

“It’s like Rooney getting three metatarsals.”“Shay has been as fit as a fiddle but in the last six months he has had a few injuries he has never had before.”

“That is worrying him and worrying us. We want to eradicate that completely.”

“This injury is not in the same place specifically, but it’s in the same areas and we need to strengthen all of those areas to dispel any fears he has that it might happen again, because that is what will cause it to happen again.”

“Snatching at the ball, and pulling the leg round rather than stroking the ball like he normally does, can put huge pressure back on those areas.”

“That is where the damage comes from.”

Sam does not want to use young Tim Krul as cover for Given’s deputy Steve Harper. Tim is currently on a 6 month loan to Scottish side Falkirk and Sam is definitely in the market for an experienced new goalkeeper.

Allardcye went on:

“I will be looking for one over the next couple of days, initially on loan.”

“Whether I can find one, I don’t know.”

The Sunday Sun is reporting that Chelsea’s Carlo Cudicini is on Newcastle wish list but Sam said

“I think everybody in this country will want to hang on to what they’ve got.”

We think bringing in a goalkeeper on loan would be fine and then we can see how Given does in the next few months. But we don’t think we need another top goalkeeper right now.

Let’s know what you think about Shay’s situation and do we really need another top class goalkeeper?

I think it’s a bit hard on Harper who is a pretty able deputy.

Well said Bob, it is tough on Harper. He has more than showed his quality over the years and does not need this sort of added pressure. This man has shown 200% loyalty to Newcastle and he could easily moved on to other clubs as the chances were there for him, but no, he decided to stick it out and fight, not the usual behaviour of modern players. Plus as Harper has been with the club so long, his wage will be nowhere near as good as most other players, even taking into account that goalkeepers are usually the poorest paid in a team.
But the i got on to thinking a bit. Is this SA looking for another goalie as a short term thing or what. Krol is out on loan untill January but can be recalled. We have another keeper here on our books. We have Steve Harper and Shay Given albeit injured. Then i thought, Givens injury was really bad last year, are his present injuries connected?. The proximety of the injuries are the same and the way different parts of our anatomy connect, it is not without probability. So maybe SA is in protection mode very quickly and knows more than we do.

Harps is world class, for a deputy – he proved this yesterday.
It’s cover for Harps we need.

I thought Harper was excellent yesterday. Both he and Given deserve their place.

I think that quite rightly, Sam is looking for a replacement for Given. He is getting on in age, and there is a very good chance he is never going to fully recover from these injuries. If we can cash in on him some now and bring in a younger class keeper, I’d be all for it. Harper being willing to be a backup for this many years doesn’t show loyalty to the club, but an utter lack of ambition.

Gary`s comment that Steve Harper has shown a lack of ambition is total crap and shows that he does not read or listen to what has been going on with Harper. Since Harper came to this club successive managers have promised him the earth but never produced. Bobby Robson publicly said he took Harper to one side and told him he would get his chance even if it meant playing alternate weeks or in cup gamees. Robson was the one to break his promise. Souness promised him the same, and as soon as Given was fit, back he came without practise games. Glen Roeder did the same. They all promise the lad one thing when he has asked about his position and all have let him down. Just because Harper is a quiet lad, does not mean he lacks ambition, it is just he gets on with his job and keeps up his end of the deal. How long before Sa drops him for Given and look at the performances of Steve to date.

I believe Alan Shearer said that Harper would be in all the England teams if it werent for having Shay Given in front of him all the time.

To me Harper is an excellent keeper, it’s just a shame for him, but good for Newcastle, that we have Shay Given who is one of the best keepers the premiership has ever seen and Harper proved this at the weekend, producing some top saves.

If BSA signs a keeper it should be back up for Harper as he deserves his chance even if Given gets fit again, I would stick with Harper in goal as it isnt right for him to be kicked out the team as soon as the first choice keeper is back if he is performing so well.

I think it’s a bit rough on Given, it’s like he could of walked countless of times, to lets face it better clubs, but he didn’t when most people would have. He deserves better then what’s been put in front of him but he stayed, he stayed because he was loyal. He is one of the best keepers in Europe and if he had a decent backline in front of him, like at Chelsea he would be the best in Europe and people would no it. If Newcastle’s defense had been doing their job in the first place Given wouldn’t of gotten injured.

He’s pulled ye out of the fire I don’t know how many times, without him Newcastle would have been relegated countless of times, but he’s so underated and the fans are too used to him saving the day and when he does but someone like Martins scores a goal that wins ye the match he’s the hero. And now after years of loyalty and superb displays, now that he’s injured it’s how much can we get for him??..from some fans and Harpers the right choice cause honestly, Harper isn’t as good as Given, Harper had one good match. Given isn’t always picked ahead of Harper cause they feel like it, Given is the best keeper in Europe, maybe ye should remember that and give him a chance to get fit. Most keepers aren’t as brave as Given, if half of them were in his situation and got injured like he did I doubt they would of gone back playing. Given though, first match back, against Arsenal where he preformed outstanding and saved us a point, in the opening mins he was faced with the exact same situation that he was in where he got injured and he didn’t even flinch he just when straight it. Without him ye wouldn’t even be in the premiership, how many points has he gotten ye in the past..can’t remember. One little problem, where he’s injured and it’s thanks but now we’ll get someone new. Given could of walked but he didn’t, he’s the patience of a saint to play with that the defense in front of him. He knew where his loyalties were maybe ye should think of those “couple” of matches where he’s preformed out of this world and give him a chance to get fit.

I´ve always thought Harper was the better keeper and have thought for many years. Given doesn´t save world class saves out in the corners and so on while I think Harper is more able to do that. Given best strength his his agility and reflexes, he makes very good reflexes and I feel Harper is just as good at that. Harper is also 1cm bigger ! 😉

YOu’ve thought this..by using your imagination?? He wasn’t great last year and that’s about it. You’ve obviously closed your eyes for half of the saves he makes are from the top corners, and are top class, he doesn’t just stand there and watch them. It’s hardly his fault Harper is taller then him like, he’s still alot better then him.

Age is catching up with shay given. But to me he is still a top draw keeper. Is injuries will keep him out often, then i think it is wise for Newcastle to get a cover for Harper. Harper is also a top draw keeper.
